Grateful to have brought my friend Lee Anne on the channel, she's a wonderful human being with an enormously open mind. She enjoyed this so much she even is considering how to program final fantasy in the future.
Lee Anne Myslewski, joined Wolf Trap Opera in 2006, and has cultivated new partnerships and programs to uphold the company’s widespread acclaim as the country’s most venerated summer training program for emerging artists. She conceived of the Untrapped series of programming which has featured artistic partnerships with the Shakespeare Theatre, Taffety Punk, Children’s National Medical Center as well as ongoing partnerships with The Phillips Collection and the National Orchestral Institute, created the Artistic Advisor position for Chamber Music at the Barns, and has participated in the casting and programming of operatic productions for over a decade. As VP of Opera and Classical Programming, Lee Anne oversees all aspects of Wolf Trap Opera, an artist-centric program whose alumni are singing in every opera house in the nation and in the most prestigious houses in the world.

Absolutely love her reactions. Some of the other guests have sort of felt like keeping vg music at arm's length to me. Her imagining the setting and action accompanying the music is the main way I engage with music in general, so it was refreshing to connect with her in that way. And her pointing out "That's your part right there, Marco" made me laugh and showed she was really engaging and giving it a chance on its own merit as video game music but still respecting it.

I do think the part about how video game music is siloed off is a subject worth deeper exploration, because it's had a couple of weird effects. On the one hand, video game music is often not treated seriously by professional musicians, including both more traditional classical and opera musicians as well as more modern rock/pop/rap/EDM musicians. There's still the stigma of it being essentially toys for kids, and so a lot of really great music just flies under the radar for the rest of the industry. On the other hand, that separation has allowed video game music to flourish and develop in ways that more conventional music can't, or won't. No conventional musician, for example, would consider merging choir music with heavy metal and dubstep, but Ultrakill did. The idea of a modular musical is absolutely mental, but Stray Gods pulled it off. And there are vanishingly few rock musicians that get as experimental with genre as Daisuke Ishiwatari in Guilty Gear, with Strive in particular having insane bangers like Drift, The Gravity, Mirror of the World, and Necessary Discrepancy. It would be nice if more people gave video game music the respect it deserves, but I wouldn't trade the weird little niche it's built up for anything.

I don't think being more accepted by 'normie' musicians would necessarily be a bad thing. The big concern there isn't that VG music would lose the uniqueness, as that uniqueness comes from the context of trying to marry the music to the interactive experience and more personally attached emotional context(to the viewer, at any rate, compared to normal musical environs) it is attached to. The bigger worry would be VG publishers pushing for 'big names' in the normal spaces to do composition just based on the power of their name, not realizing that most of them have no clue what they are doing when it comes to actually composing, let alone for an interactive medium. THAT is where you'd lose the uniqueness, is in the form of preferring 'established' artists with a set sound, instead of what video game music currently is, where most the prolific composers within the field are either self-taught or don't really care about 'standards' to begin with. The isolation of the industry encourages internal development, and with it, the introduction of new talent and sound textures, instead of just banking on a name to carry it, the way a LOT of non-VG music does.

As a lot of folks are probably rushing here to say, Tetris was invented by Alexey Pajitnov, a computer scientist in the Soviet Union who got into making video games as a hobby. The tune is a 19th century Russian folk song called Korobeiniki, "The Peddlers", and you can probably find a version performed by the Red Army Chorus on KZbin. It sounds authentic because it is, just rearranged in Chiptune form by Hirozu Tanaka for the Game Boy version.

Just wondering, do you let the guests know if a piece of music is intended as a loop (e.g. Nier Automata) therefore the composition may not follow a classical structure. It's incredible that the composers are able to create pieces not only sounds amazing on their own, but also fulfills their utility within the context of the gameplay (where classical music, for the most part, only need to focus on its art).

I like how you included Tetris especially now, because a young boy just got the biggest achievement ever on this super old game. This deserves to be acknowledged.

I can actually expand on the looping nature of video game music from a programmer's perspective! Back in the Tetris days, they had to make the loops as short as they did due to hardware constraints. Audio files tend to get big really fast, so a short loop was all they could really manage realistically. As you move forward in time, the loops stay shorter but the audio quality improves drastically. Newer hardware meant they could store more data, but they couldn't make the loops longer...yet. As you keep pushing forward, starting in around the late 90s (I think?), folks were finally able to start making longer loops and adding more audio tracks to a single game while also improving audio quality. Now games can have a couple dozen full 5+ minute tracks that still loop! And that's a long overdue rant off my chest because I'm an audio nerd and a music junkie. :P

My two game music moments I will always remember are: 1. Tomb Raider (the old original), entering the Citadel. The combination of the graphics / level size was amazing. 3D was new at the time and the sheer size of the level, the glowing water deep down and the atmosphere. I really felt like an adventurer who just found a giant, ancient water reservoir under the desert. Then the music kicked in (the Oboe theme) and all I remember is goosebumps. 2. Age of Conan, entering the Conall Valley. Again, the graphics were astonishing for the time. You moved through the valley with the grass moving in the wind, wolves were hunting prey in the distance. Then the valley opens up to the Cimmerian village and the full valley in all of its glory behind it when the female voice kicks in. That moment, the game had me hooked up for the next 7 years.

Fantastic video, she is such a good sport and so clearly passionate for music as a whole. For older video game music, it's also really important to remember that there was a physical limitation to how many sounds you could get out of the sound portion of the cartridge. 8 and 16 bit music is exactly that, you only had 1 or 2 bytes (equivalent to 1 to 2 of each letter typed here) worth of information to make noise with. 8 to 16 "instruments" (digital signals). It is an absolute monument to technical ability and coordination between audio and programming that these sounds still live on. I love modern video game music. It's incredible that you can record full quality studio sound and package it with a game in its entirety, lossless. It's a net positive. But there's something magical about those older soundtracks. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I truly think they tapped into something special back then. edit: I'm bad at ascii and data conversion. fixed.

Great video as always, just a slight correction, the version of grandma that you used, its the Nier Replicant version The nier automata version is another one that has a chorus and has a more aggressive tone

Morrowind Theme is very special in my heart, before playing the game, I feel the goosebumps. After I beat the game, I still got the goosebumps and tears in my eye as I recall my own journey in the game, still magical to this day.

I was super surprised to see Gerudo Valley pop up! If you haven't already, you should definitely give some of the tracks from Cadence of Hyrule a listen as well - they remix a lot of the classic Legend of Zelda music into groovy rhythm game jams! (The main menu ost, Fairy Fountain, Windmill theme, and Gerudo Desert are some of my favorites!)

26:00 when this song came on when we got back to Shadow Moses in MGS4, i couldnt help but just stop and put the controller down. I cannot emphasize how much i love this song. Every time it takes me back to 1999, lying on my bed as a 7 year old kid excited to play a new game unlike Crash Bandicoot or Tekken, then also reminds me of the utter frustration over 4 days i had of trying to beat MG Rex, but then also that feeling of victory when i did. God times were so much better back then....

About Terra's theme, have you ever heard the vocal version from Pray? It's called Toki no Hōrōsha. I love all the songs from that record.

It's fun to hear the older themes and stuff. I always get that nice hit of nostalgia every time I hear certain tracks. I've never played Ocarina, but even then, I'm familiar with the Geruda Valley theme. And I don't know about you, but if you don't bop your head to Tetris, you may need to check your pulse. Also... I love hearing anything Lyn!

I really like this format. Following a journey through time with the video game music. You really can't get the whole picture without hearing the whole progression, and examining some of the older, more obviously made-for-video-games selections. Especially noting how composers for NES/SNES era games had so little to work with, yet made works of art.

Should have included a song from Transistor, a game where the main protagonist is a singer who lost her voice. "We All Become" and "The Spine" are great, as is "Paper Boats", but the last one might not be quite as impactful without having played the game.

Would love to see one of these videos talking about the main theme for Battlefield 3 and maybe also talk about the music from Battlefield 2042 where Hildur Guðnadóttir had never been a gamer and had intentionally not listened to game soundtracks before making the music to try to make her own thing and I thinks it’s really unique.

I'm glad you were able to share songs like God Shattering Star, SSBB theme, Lady Maria and Astalgia of the Phantasm. One of your videos that really stood out to me was your reaction to Morning Light Hymnus, your enthusiasm and passion for what you saw as modern day opera music given your background and passion for video game music was just really endearing. I hope one day you can share Morning Light Hymnus with a Baritone/Tenor singer in this series.
