I work in commercial voice acting, so I haven't experienced it myself, but several of my friends have been called into the booth without knowing who they're playing. It's most common with NPCs/"additional voices." They'll call up people on their roster and just say "Hey, want to come by and do a session of additional voices?" There are times they don't even know what game it's for.
