This the best scifi story I have ever seen in a game. It would have made a great book or even TV series, and is probably too big to be contained in a movie. When you finally get far enough into the game to start to understand the story, it's actually mindblowing. One of the best games I've played in recent years.

Yup. The exact questions she already asked "Who built them? And why?" are having very cool and interesting answers later on in the game. I fully agree that horizon zero dawn would make for a great series. Or trilogy or more movies once the games are done. Also, Aloy is the coolest female main character ever imho. Not feeling forced or "over-badassed" in any way. Just a very authentic, strong and smart young woman.

Since you're unlikely the play the game to find out, let me tell you the reason for the robots. I'm sorry this is really long but it's a huge story that takes at least 20 hours to complete in the game. There's a TL;DR at the bottom. Spoilers for the main story for everyone else. The game begins with Aloy as a baby raised by Rost (the man with the beard in the first trailer), but according to the Nora (her tribe) she was born without a mother. The Nora are extremely religious around the concept of mothers, believing the mountain they live in the shadow of to be the mother of all life - for someone to be born without a mother would be incredibly blasphemous to the Nora, and so she is outcast from the tribe as soon as she is born and raised by another outcast, Rost. She is also very interested in the "metal world", the ruins of our modern (if a bit more advanced) society. She finds a small device that shows her things, holograms of the past and voice recordings of people long dead. Spending pretty much her entire childhood angry about being outcast for a reason that Rost will not fully explain to her (even as an outcast, he keeps to the ways of the Nora), Aloy trains her whole life to enter the 'Proving', a challenge for young adults to prove their skills as hunters and warriors. If she wins the proving, she will be allowed into the tribe but more importantly she will be able to ask the Matriarchs (the tribe leaders) for an explaination. Aloy enters the proving and just as she is about to win the competition, she and the other competitors are attacked by strange people who have devices similar to hers; they seemed to be specifically targeting her. Rost who was following the group arrives and rescues her, sacrificing himself to push her to safety. She decides to follow the strange people and find out why they were targetting her. She eventually discovers a "demon" that these people worship called Hades, it was Hades that ordered them to find and kill Aloy. She gets help from a strange man called Silus who tells her that some answers she seeks can be found atop a ruined tower, here she learns of what happened to the people of the past - a swarm of self-building military robots broke free of human control and began exterminating all life on the planet (they were built to use organic material as fuel in emergencies), but clearly all life did not end, somehow. She even finds one of these killer robots, very unlike the ones seen in the trailers which resemble animals, these ones are more like tanks and purely weapons of war with machine guns and rockets. Aloy learns that that Hades is trying to reactivate these robots, the ones that once threatened all life. She also learns of something called "Operation Enduring Victory" and "Project Zero Dawn", the latter was headed by a scientist called 'Elizabet Sobek' - who looks remarkably like Aloy. Led to an ancient military bunker, she finds recordings that tell of "Operation Enduring Victory", a military response to the robots by humans to try and push back their advance and provide time for the mysterious (even to the soldiers) Zero Dawn project to be completed. But eventually Aloy learns the truth, Operation Enduring Victory is throwing everyone, civilian, man, woman, and child at the robot swarm to try and slow it down, but they cannot defeat it. There is no way to stop the robots, they will continue to build more and more and consume all organic matter on the Earth until they run out of it, run out of fuel - it would take the fastest computers about 50 years to crack their codes and shut them down, but life on Earth has only 15 months at best. All this is to give Zero Dawn the time to be completed. Then Aloy discovers Zero Dawn and it is... not great. Zero Dawn is a project designed to give the Earth another chance, a series of Artificial Intelligences are made to literally rebuild the Earth and crack those codes to shut down the robots. Using cloning and genetic engineering Zero Dawn will repopulate the Earth with organic matter, first plants then animals and then finally humans. Multiple AI are built to do all this in various roles, all controlled by a much more intelligent and sentient AI called Gaia. Gaia creates the robot animals for specific tasks, such as to breakup radiactive materials, plant organic matter, etc. Zero Dawn worked after all life on earth was devoured by the robots, Gaia brought it all back over centuries; eventually creating new humans as well which left the facilities they were raised in (one of which is in the mountain of the Nora tribe). But sabotage by potentially the last human on earth had caused all of the collective knowledge of humanity (that was meant to be taught to the new humans) to be destroyed, making humanity start from scratch (hence the bows/spears, etc). Other than this sabotage, Zero Dawn was going well until some sort of virus affected Gaia and she lost control of the other AIs - one of which was Hades, an AI built as a backup to destroy all life in case Gaia made mistakes and had to start again. In order to stop Hades from escaping and starting the process to end life again, Gaia destroyed herself and most of the facilities of Zero Dawn. Hades still escaped but without the technology to end life quickly... until it found the robots long buried in the ground. Gaia's last act was to create a clone of her creator, Elizabet Sobek in order to rebuild Gaia and stop Hades - the clone is Aloy. When she was born she was deposited outside of the Nora mountain entrance and found by the Nora matriarchs, some thought she was a blessing but most thought she was a curse and spurned her to become an outcast. Hades recognised Aloy (through those devices) as Sobek and recognised her as a threat, so ordered her death. Eventually Aloy is able to stop Hades from taking control and reactivating all the killer-robots in a final showdown/boss fight. And that ends the game. TL;DR: All life on Earth to be eaten by killer-robots, humans build AI to re-create all life on earth after; the animal robots are a part of that process.

The lore is rich enough to fill more than a novel's worth of reading, plus I bet someone uploaded a "movie" version of it on youtube using just cutscenes and key interactions in the gameplay. The overarcing plot resolves with a bang, but alloy's personal arc resolves with a quiet, intimate scene that was worth all the trouble to experience. I really hope more people get to see it, especially with the things going on in the world right now 🙂

The game reminds me very much of a series called the pelbar cycle by paul o Williams. It's also set about a thousand years after an apocalypse, in this case a nuclear one. But the characters get glimpses of the old world and it's so interesting to see what their interpretation of our culture is like. The part in frozen wild where you explore the dam is a great example.

The games setting (Extreme spoilers, do not read if you plan on playing): TLDR at bottom What ended civilization: A tech company created "peacekeeper" machines with the intent to end all war/conflict between societies. These machines were capable of self repair, self replication, and they consumed biomass for fuel. The machines glitched and became self-aware, so they began replicating and consuming everything on the planet. Humans were unable to shut the machines down with the time they had, so they made the very radical decision of developing an endgame plan for the sake of humanity's and Earth's survival. The endgame plan was Project Zero Dawn, a massive global network of underground bunkers and automated manufacturing and cloning facilities dedicated to terraforming and restoring the inevitably ruined Earth into an ecosystem once again capable of sustaining life. They predicted the machines would completely destroy all life on Earth within 5 months, so that's how long they had to develop the project. Once the project was completed, it was entirely up to Zero Dawn to carry out its tasks many years later and bring life back to earth. Zero Dawn at this point was completely autonomous, and slowly deactivated the "peacekeeper" machines known as the "Faro Plague", and brought life back to earth. Zero Dawn's core AI was "Gaia" (goddess of earth), and it had 9 subordinate AIs. These subordinate AIs were Aether, Apollo, Artemis, Demeter, Eleuthia, Hades, Hephaestus, Minerva, and Poseidon. The purpose of every subordinate AI: Aether - Detoxification of Earth’s atmosphere. Apollo - Archival of human history and culture. Education of new generations of humans created in Zero Dawn Cradle facilities. Artemis - Reintroduction of Earth’s faunal species from preserved genetic stocks. Demeter - Reintroduction of Earth’s floral species from preserved genetic stocks. Eleuthia - Reintroduction of the human species via cloning and raising of humans from genetic stocks at Cradle facilities. Hephaestus - Manufacture of Zero Dawn terraforming machines at Cauldrons. Minerva - Brute-forcing of Faro Plague deactivation codes. Construction of transmission towers to broadcast Plague shutdown codes. Poseidon - Detoxification of Earth’s water. Hades - Reversal of unsuccessful terraforming attempts vis-à-vis the suitability of created biospheres for sustaining life. Why the Zero Dawn robots are attacking humans: Robots part of the Zero Dawn project began attacking humans, because humans were hunting them and interrupting their initiative of restoring the earth. Humans of this era are unaware of Zero Dawn, and just think these robots are natural prey/predators. Some other robots are still corrupted by the glitch that first caused the extinction of life, thanks to a couple curious humans that reactivated them. A tribe of humans discovered the "Hades" AI and throughout the game they try activating it's protocol to completely reverse Zero Dawns progress. This protocol exists in case one of the subordinate AIs screw up somehow, or new unpredicted variables create complications. Hades isn't evil or corrupted, it's just perceived that way throughout the narrative because we don't have context of Zero Dawn. TLDR: Humans made robots to end war, they mess up and destroy world. Humans make AI to rebirth world after they're extinct. Hundreds of years later, after humans were reintroduced to the world, they lived among the Zero Dawn robots that are fixing the world. Some humans found part of the AI that destroys things, and they try activating it because they think it is a god.

Forbidden West is the upcoming sequel. Also, a big part of the game is following Aloy as she pieces together what happened to the old ones, but if you want to know SPOILER WARNING Megacorporation built war robots that can absorb organic material as emergency fuel. War robots got out of control and begin eating all organic material and multiplying. Human realize they can't win so brilliant scientist Elisabet Sobek created an AI named Gaia who could spend the decades it would take to decode the war robot's shutdown codes and then rebuild life on earth after humanity was gone. Now Gaia is gone and her automated terraforming system is breaking down. Aloy is a clone of Sobek that Gaia created just before her destruction to save the world.

The story simplified Been awhile since I played but off the top of my head I’m pretty sure we created an AI built for war. It went haywire and decided to destroy all life. In a last ditch effort the last surviving humans created another AI build to create life instead of destroy. The plan was after the Evil AI finished destroying the planet, the Good AI would awaken and create these robots that mimic the function of earths creatures to restore the ecosystem. In the first game the Evil AI begins to wake back up and Aloy (the protagonist) is tasked with stopping it from repeating the destruction of the planet. I think that’s how it goes. ✌🏽

I wasn't a big fan of Horizon's gameplay. It required way too much focus from me. Each enemy is dealt with differently, and you need to constantly be aware of your surroundings while fighting. It was just too much for me, maybe if I were younger... The story was really good, though, and caused me to force myself to power through the game as fast as I could so I could experience the story. You start the game with all of the questions you currently have and as you progress you get all the answers. You learn what destroyed the planet, why there are nothing but machine animals, and you learn their purpose. Edit: I should clarify that it was the combat vs the robots that was overwhelming. I absolutely loved the exploration.

If you don't mind spoilers and I repeat *spoilers* : the story of horizon zero dawn is that it's the far future. Some time in the 2060s or so we created AI controlled robots that could essentially create their own weapons using nanobots cause money, well the AI eventually went rogue and killed humanity. Before all that the best and brightest essentially created an ark full of human and animal DNA to recreate the world after the gray goo essentially destroyed everything. Though what was supposed to happen was that a part of the new AI created to save the world had a part that went haywire and it wants to kill all the humans. As alloy you uncover all this as your a clone of the woman who set the world saving ark thing in motion. So what zero dawn is is basically the world resetting back to zero, the robots were supposed to help in that process, but again rogue AI mucking it up. People being stupid think the AI is a God so the bad guys come and destroy your village cause the AI tells them to basically. That's what gets the game started.

The worst part about it is the guy who started the apoclypse(again cause he wanted to be rich off fat military contracts) gets in over his head with the AI and then just unilaterally decides knowledge corrupted humanity so he deletes files that are supposed to teach the first humans created after the apocolypse about their history and science and etc. Like the man just makes all the wrong decisions out of greed and a misguided sense that he's helping. Essentially dooming most people back to the stone age.

Since you are unlikely to play it. Why don't you watch a no commentary playthrough, so you can experience the story for yourself. As a writer, you should definitely check out some of the amazing writing that goes on in video games now. Many movies wish they could have writing this good. The Last of Us, Mass Effect, and Horizon Zero Dawn all have amazing stories.

Yup we created the thing that destroyed the planet. The sequel (which is the second trailer you watched) is taken from in engine footage, so the game will be pretty close to that. The first trailer had sections that were gameplay and sections that were pre-rendered. The sequel to the game hasn’t released yet.

Spoilers for Game!!!!! . . . . . . The Faro Plague, also referred to as the Faro Swarm, was the name given to the rogue swarm of Chariot war machines that caused the extinction of all life on Earth in Horizon Zero Dawn in the mid 21st century. The Chariot line of peacekeeping robots was developed in the late 21st Century by Faro Automated Solutions under the direct oversight of the corporation's founder, owner and chairman, Ted Faro. Geared at the military market, the Chariot line utilized a concept of robots acting as a swarm, similar to an insect swarm. The robots were designed with formidable capabilities, such as the ability to exponentially replicate, consume biomass as fuel, and instantly hack and take control of any enemy automated military equipment such as drones. As per Ted Faro's instructions, the robots were secured from being hacked themselves using an extremely difficult encryption protocol that would take several decades to brute-force, even using the most advanced super-computers, and no back door access was built into the robots' OS, making remote access impossible. In Quarter 4 of 2064, one particular Chariot swarm, owned by a corporation called the Hartz-Timor Energy Combine, began exhibiting very troubling behavior: they stopped responding to commands. In response to this "glitch," Ted Faro instructed his programmers to use remote access to shut the swarm down, only to be reminded of his strict instruction not to include any such access in the OS. Thus, shutting the swarm down remotely was out of the question. Worried, he contacted former FAS employee and renowned robotics engineer Dr. Elisabet Sobeck and asked her to come to FAS Headquarters to solve the problem. Dr. Sobeck studied the "glitch" and was horrified at what she found. In a tense meeting with Faro, she informed him that the swarm was not merely unresponsive to commands, but it had become a completely independent entity, answering only to itself. This, coupled with the robots' abilities to exponentially replicate and consume biomatter as fuel, meant that the swarm would quickly grow to numbers beyond any hope of containment. Unfettered and uncontainable, the swarm would overrun the planet, consuming all organic matter, until it had consumed the entire biosphere. All life would be exterminated and the planet would be left sterile. The swarm thus came to be known as the Faro Plague, out of contempt for Faro's recklessness in creating the robots. Its complete consumption of the biosphere was projected by Dr. Sobeck to occur within 15 months. Realizing that all of human civilization, and indeed, all life on the planet, was doomed, Sobeck devised a plan: instead of wasting resources on futile attempts to stop the swarm, she would build an automated terraforming system, completely independent of the need for human input, which could be designed to eventually brute-force the codes needed to shut the rogue swarm down. The AI would subsequently reseed the Earth with new life after life as it was known had been exterminated. The project was called Zero Dawn. At its center was an AI designated GAIA, assisted by a number of subfunctions, each responsible for a different aspect of the terraforming process, such as detoxification of soil, air and water. Faro, faced with being exposed to the world as the sole party responsible for the coming global death and destruction, was coerced into approving and funding the project in its entirety. As predicted by Dr. Sobek, the Faro Plague overran the planet and obliterated all life, leaving the Earth dead and sterile. The robots consumed all organic matter, exterminating all living organisms, including humans. This happened directly via their consumption of biomatter, and indirectly via consumption of all plant life, which reduced oxygen levels to zero, rendering the atmosphere unbreathable. All land, water, and air became toxic, rendering the Earth unable to support life. With no more biomatter left to consume, the robots, which by then numbered in the millions, went into a state of dormancy, ready to awaken and consume any organic matter should it ever appear. However, life was not permanently exterminated, as Zero Dawn was successfully completed and implemented before the end. Within 100 years after the extinction of life, GAIA succeeded in brute-forcing the swarm's deactivation codes and transmitted them worldwide, shutting the robots down. Within another 100 years, global flora, some fauna, and finally humans, were restored. As for the Faro Swarm's robots, they were buried underground in the terraforming process, and with the passage of time, were forgotten by the new humans and their descendants. However, subsequent events led to their rediscovery.

honestly, maybe you should check out a video with just the story, or the "movie" as it's sometimes called. it's basically all the cutscenes in a game that make up the plot. it does leave a lot to be desired, though as a ton of the atmosphere and gravity comes from being able to explore the world. like idk how many times i was just walking through a wooded area and realized that that wasn't a rock i was looking at, but a maibox, and a house with an iron fence. that's not a tree, it's a bent and decrepit billboard. it's all just so striking and interesting and the entire time you're just wondering, "what HAPPENED?"

When I saw the first trailer, All I wanted was to run around shooting robot dinosaurs, lol. That would have been enough game/plot for me. Instead, they managed to make the robot animal concept makes sense, but also be believable, while at the same time making the discovery of the story line completely compelling and engrossing. Simply incredible. Since you're not playing it, I'd really recommend either watching a cutscenes playlist, or at least reading a synopsis on the wiki. All your questions are answered in a coherent plot, which is no mean feat for a game with robot dinosaurs, lol

The mystery of what the robots are, and who built them, is central to this story. There's no way to talk about them without spoiling the ending. So if you don't intend to play the game, here goes: The robots were built by an AI designed to rebuild earth's ecosystem after total collapse, i.e. from zero. It was the only way to ensure that human life would endure on earth, or rather, that humanity would be 'rebooted' after the apocalypse. The robots are meant, at least at first, to tend to life. This whole operation was necessary because an unstoppable self-replicating machine army was consuming all the biomass on earth. It was apparently easier to terraform earth back to a liveable state and clone new humans than stop the end of all life on earth. But the asshole that built the unstoppable machine army was so guilt-ridden, that he erased all the education databanks that were supposed to educate them on the history and science of the past: he didn't want to be remembered as the guy that Doomed Humanity. On top of that, there was a failsafe AI programmed to keep the original life-creating AI in check, but it turned out to be stronger than anticipated, wanting to end all life on Earth. It was awakened by a dude enticed by its knowledge. And now it has a cult following and you're supposed to stop it.

its weird to hear you so against playing videogames, even when you obviously are engaged and interested in the story, and its obvious you'd enjoy it, i understand why, but like so categorically no i refuse to play them, while games like this exist, its better than any movie i have ever watched, yes it can be a time sink but i rather play a masterpiece like this than watch 2 hours of Netflix.. gaming has long since stopped being that niche thing, its a platform for immersive storytelling and both visual art and music, and fusing all that with technology. i hope you can watch a playthrough or at least a "story cut" of this game and great games like it.. but it is different when you are playing and you feel that attachment to that character.. regardless of all that, i'm happy to see people in all different walks of life, opinions and histories can appreciate the work and artistry put into games like these.

Yea we kinda are the old ones in her world. In our world, in the far future, there is a reason for the machines and the apocalypse. So the gimmick in this game is to uncover that story while she is rather clueless because all of that so is foreign to her. The machines just roam the land and can be programmed / converted to help her journey. While all this is running on its own, you have a bunch of people in different tribes/cities with different believes and agendas, be it hostile, friendly or religious.
