For higher level training using airsoft they could use paper to represent things like wood and dry wall and saran wrap on windows. The airsoft bbs and sim rounds should be able to go through those pretty easily.

I think the answer is a system that utilizes directional radio and receiver vests/helmets and then you could get more realistic "cover and concealment". If using the right frequency, the radio waves should interact fairly similarly to bullets with things like doors, windows, wood, drywall, steel, etc.

For the concealment as cover there's always the option of removing the glass to simulate shooting through them. I've been pretty successful with using mesh material like camo netting as concealment that you can still shoot through... for the most part.

FINALLY, you guys covered this topic. I’m not gonna lie, the GLOCK Umarex airsoft gas blowback pistols have been a great training aid for me to practice basic exercises like loading the weapon, drawing from a concealed holster, aligning front and rear sights, proper grip, basic target acquisition, tactical reloads from concealed holster, dry firing, and basic marksmanship. I currently use the Glock 45 UMAREX that can be purchased off amazon or Evike. The gun feels remarkably similar to the real pistol. The GBB pistols uses GREEN GAS instead of C02, which leads to less wear and tear on the gun reciprocating. As long as you don’t drop the magazines too hard, you can be using them for a long time.

There are paintball markers that replicate the functions of actual firearms, but they're very limited in magazine capacity and noticeably more expensive than regular paintball. Still, there are paint, dust, rubber, and pepper rounds available. US Army recently ordered an AR-based marker - the Variable Kinetic System - for crowd control.

As long as you keep a mindset of "i am going to stay focused on using tactics" before the thought enters your head that "oh, im playing a game" you should be alright in my opinion. Its all about mindset and what you are trying to get out of airsoft...just keep a "tactical/tactics" mindset.

Back a decade ago, it was only simunition. It’s essentially a conversion that makes the actual firearm act like a paint ball since it marks. Airsoft allows for a lot of training to be carried over save for recoil mitigation and shot anticipation. No sound, and not much recoil. If you’re training for a 22LR, the airsoft usually recoils more violently though. But the down side is that it’s not that accurate (the gas rifles can be somewhat decent) and are finicky. There’s also a maintenance factor to it. It’s good for force on force if the opposing force admits their hits. Tactics can be used assuming you’re not playing with speedsofters and you’re in a controlled environment, ala simunition. If price is the main factor, nothing beats reloading. The only issue is if you’ve got the time as it’s labor intensive.

Using heavier weight BBs makes these airsoft pistols incredibly accurate out to distances of 20-30 yards

I've been looking to make some Airsoft stuff to mimic my RL kit. It's hard to find a G34 in Airsoft

For the force on force around vehicles issue, why not just roll down the windows on the vehicles used in the class? That way the students get to experience the whole "glass does not stop bullets" thing.

There are some paintball markers that get pretty close to real firearms, but they're pricey.
