Empire of pain is a DELICIOUS book , it does feel like a thriller, and it feels like having a friend telling you all the nasty secrets of another's friend family that you don't know but you know enough about to be soooooo into the drama ,it's really gossipy but in a GOOD way. Plus it's just a good book to get in the mind of the "my goal in this life is to save humanity " type of scientists/entrepreneurs/CEOs of big companies etc. The amount of time I gasped is ridiculous. Can't recommend it enough, especially as an audio book because it's read by Patrick Keefe himself which adds the gossipy element to it .

The memory book sounds really interesting. I had always understood that "human" memory retention was tied to language -- which could be why our oldest memories only reach back to the time when we began to understand speech and speak ourselves, because we catalog objects and places in our world using words. My oldest memory, which is really just a few seconds of walking from one room to another through a beaded curtain, is from when I was about two, and starting to use language.

I just ordered the book about Lizzie Borden. Thanks for recommending it. I have heard of her, but have never read up on the case. Question. Did you enjoy reading 'The bell jar' by Sylvia Plath? I'm reading the biography of Assia Wevill, 'Lover of unreason'. Wevill was a poet herself and was the woman Ted Hughes had an affair with while still married to Plath (she was actually pregnant of his child at the time of Plath's suicide). Wevill and Hughes had a daughter together, but 6 years after Plath had died, Wevill killed her daughter and committed suicide. It's a very tragic and moving story, if you're into literary biographies. Also ordered 'Down among the women', that's supposed to be a sassy and dark novel by Fay Weldon (published in or around 1970), that follows a group of women who are having liaisons, marry, divorce, sometimes die,... You might enjoy that one of you enjoyed 'Valley of the dolls'... I'm really happy to have you back and that you're alright.

Ive been really into music biographies lately-- Chronicles by Bob Dylan is good, but some of it can only truly be understood when youre older I feel? Very well written though. Also Joan Baez's And A Voice To Sing With is a beautiful portrait of a sensitive girl with a haunting voice becoming both a folk singer and activist. Just Kids by Patti Smith is the ultimate music biography--a MUST READ! but it is very similar to fiction, not sciency

Your comment on memory triggered my own memory of a Jesuit missionary, Matteo Ricci. Here's a blurb: "In 1596 the Italian Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci wrote the “Treatise on Mnemonic Arts,” a short book on memory recall, while posted in China as a missionary. Ricci’s memory device was called a memory palace, and it helped improve one’s memory. To aid in the recall of important facts and knowledge, Ricci outlined a system of assigning visual images to concepts and then “placing” the image in a memory palace." I found it interesting, although I couldn't remember the guy's name and had to look for it!! As a retired teacher of English and history, I love your videos.

If you like the humor of Lemony Snicket and Neil Gaimen, you might enjoy The Magnetic Fields. (Stephin Merritt writes the songs for Daniel Handler's audiobooks, and did the music for Gaimen's --very dark-- Broadway musical adaptation of Coraline.) A great collection if you're interested in Gorey as a subject is his collection of interviews titled "Ascending Peculiarity". I highly rec it if you ever come across it in a used bookstore. You really get a sense of how funny and knowledgeable he was! Now if they'll just finish that documentary already.
