My sister is a city council member (in the US) and implemented a program in her city called Changing Lives Through Literature, which is an alternative sentencing program that has non-violent offenders basically join an intense book club instead of going to prison. Obviously I’d rather abolish the prison system, but at least their recidivism rate is much lower and they’re getting enrichment instead of…nothing. Thought of that when you were talking about Dear Reader!

Based on the Maud West book, I think Conan Doyle for the Defense may be up your alley. It’s like Sherlock Holmes meets Making a Murderer. My other go-tos are Radium Girls, Say Nothing, Denial, and Hunger.

From what I've read, I think maybe you'd enjoy In the Dream House (memoir about an abusive queer relationship) and The Undocumented Americans (part memoir, part exploration of this group of people). Recently I've also read Maybe You Should Talk to Someone and loved it, but I'm not sure it would be something that you would want to read while in therapy yourself. It's not a difficult read at all and I found it very insightful, but if I was in therapy I would probably start analysing my therapist's work instead of focusing on my side of the equation.

Dear reader is brilliant and worthy of it being a favourite as well. I agree with everything you said about it. Persepolis is one of my favourite graphic novels and I learned so much while reading it, and also related to her a lot when it came to her experience living internationally. And I have maus on my tbr wishlist and really want to try that one.

Since you like Graphic Memoir you should definitely try The Best We Could Do which is a similar to Maus in that the daughter of Vietnamese refugees is writing about the effect the war had on her parents (she was a child when they left Vietnam) And it's not a light topic by any means but you should consider reading No Visible Bruises: what we don't know about domestic violence can kill us. It is fairly US centric but I think applies more widely too. Do read the updated paperback or ebook, there's an afterward the author added after the book tour for the hardcover that is really meaningful. Edited to add because I almost forgot: Red Comet! It's a real chonker but I think you might enjoy this extremely detailed Sylvia Plath biography

Thanks for sharing!! One that I will always recommend to everyone is Holding The Man by Timothy Conigrave. It's a memoir of a gay man living in Australia during the AIDS epidemic. Heart-wrenching but so fucking beautiful. There's also a movie which is great.

Great list, I’ve added most of it to my tbr. And you made me reread Eating Animals ❤️ Foer’s book also made me quit meat. I were looking for motivation for going vegetarian for long time and this was the voice that finally made that really big impact on me and motivated me. I think that reason why this book speaks so strong is this how amazingly emphatic, open and sincere the author is.

My friend got me maus for my birthday last year and this is making me really want to actually pick it up sooner! I read Persepolis over the summer and it was so interesting. I would fully recommend braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer specifically the audiobook. I read it for a class this semester and I adored it

I really recommend Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski. It's about women's sexual health and it's incredible. It's not trans-inclusive, but the author addresses it in a way to show that it's not transphobic, there just isn't enough research to fully comment on it.

“Argonauts by Maggie Smith” made me giggle Loved this video, I’m trying to read more non-fiction so this added a whole pile to my tbr! I would recommend All the Young Men - Ruth Coker Burks, I read that recently and really enjoyed it (thought I’m never sure that enjoyed is the right word!) x

Yes, you can say graphic novel, especially for Maus which is very creative nonfiction, but graphic nonfiction or graphic memoir are the specific terms. Your comment does touch on a lexical gap; a full length work of fiction is a novel but a book of nonfiction doesn’t have a name!
