Unfortunately there are no longer "trillevogn" - trolley carts - serving coffe, soft-drinks , sandwiches etc. They stopped during the pandemic and have never returned. So you have to stock up with refreshments before.

Back when I traveled on those accursed trains (absolutely hate them!) there wasn't any onboard services at all on them. If you were lucky, the vending machines would maybe work, but that was it. I was commuting with those trains between Malmö and Copenhagen, and also went all the way between Copenhagen and Gothenburg many times (my home town is near Gothenburg) between 2006 and early 2012. If possible, I'd take X2000 over these trains when traveling to or from my hometown to spend time with family, sometimes I'd even take the bus (Swebus Express or Bus4U) because even that was better than Øresundståg in many ways. Funnily enough, C X2000 is both faster, more comfortable and at the time, was often less expensive as well... It wasn't rare for me to get a first class X2000 ticket for less than what the Øresundståg would have cost...

Just to be pedantic. The Swedish X2000 is not an EMU. It is a loco and carriages and a driving trailer at the end.

Fixed formation is classed as EMU. Same with TGV. HST etc.

"X2" is the actual class designation ("littera" in Swedish), "X2000" is a product/marketing name just like eg "Øresundståg"). In the Swedish class designation system "X" denotes EMUs, so in that sense the X2 is an EMU. It is a unit designed to stay assembled, rather than being re-arranged like a "classic" train consisting of a locomotive and coaches. On the other hand, there is no "multiple" about it in the sense that motors are distributed throughout the unit but rather there is a single "propulsion unit". So calling it a train with loco and coaches is not describing it perfectly. Calling it an EMU is not describing it perfectly. Bottom line: When it was designed and classified, EMU and Swedish littera prefix "X' was chosen.

You can also see the border when crossing the bridge. The bridge trusses are painted red and white and then blue and yellow at the border point. It is only a very short stretch, so you have to look out for it to catch it. 😁

Planned tunnel under Helsingborg replacing a single track tunnel. Newly opened 250 km/h stretch between Maria (Helsingborg) and Ängelholm. The Hallandsås tunnel New tunnel under construction under Varberg replacing a slow single track line. Västlänken tunnel under Gothenburg under construction.

As a Dutchman, I'm always surprised that other countries still have single-track lines. Perhaps because the Dutch have the busiest rail network in Europe (measured by trains-km per route-km). There are single-track lines in the Netherlands, just not that many.

Great video, had happy memories of visiting Copenhagen railway station with my parents way back in 1982 when my dad was working in the city. The restaurant there did an amazing all you can eat buffet and Tivoli is just across the way.

Interesting, I didn't know these trains came in an electric variant in Denmark. In Belgium we also have an electric variant of this train, they are nicknamed "Danish noses", although commonly also referred as "those with rubber bands" by the general public. They are really comfortable, I use them to go to work a few times a week.

This is not "an electric variant" of the IC3 --- or the they kind-of are. IC3 is the original diesel-driven version from 1989. IR4 is the electrical variant, meant for regional traffic, with different wagon layout and in sets of 4 wagons. They can work together in a combined train set. Both trains run in domestic traffic. The train in the video is the Øresundståg, which albeit using the same idea is built differently and is not compatible with IC3 and IR4. It is built to serve traffic in both Denmark and Sweden in the Øresund region.

There's IC3 / Class MF, which is the original diesel variation. That one is not quite identical to the Belgian version, since the doors and body shape are different, but they have the same nose mechanism. There's also a Spanish version which is very similar to the Belgian version. Then there's the IR4 / Class ER, which is an electric 4-car variant of the IC3, which can only run in Denmark. This is the Øresundståg / Class ET (Danish classing) / Class X31k (Swedish classing) / Contessa (manufacturer's name). Most of the train is very similar to the Bombardier Regina trains, and the motors have identical sounds to those, and the nose is the only thing that is copied from the Flexliner family.

We have done kobenhavn to Stockholm twice. Both journeys were great and very scenic. The first trip was in year 2000 to celebrate the Oresund link; the second was in 2009 on our way to Stockholm to take the Gota Canal. Both journeys involved reversal at Malmo. We are repeating the journey in reverse next month and I am excited at the prospect of straight through running at Malmo.

Central Kungsbacka is mostly a commuter town for Goteborg, however there is a nice town square with a particularly convivial bar/restaurant on one corner. Lots of nice coastline around there.

I well remember as a young kid spending around a month travelling around Europe by train. It was early to mid 1970's if my memory has not totally failed me here. Part of our "tour of Europe" was making a crossing from Copenhagen to Stockholm. Of course there was no tunnel/bridge complex in use at that time the train boarded a ferry and crossed over to Sweden.

Back in 2001 I have traveled from Copenhagen to Malmö and than with the X2000 to Stockholm. There were no passport controls at that time. And Malmö station was still above ground. But more interesting was the ride to Copenhagen. I chose to take the EC from Hamburg to Copenhagen. It was the same type of train, but diesel version. At Puttgarden on the isle of Fehmarn the train drove on the ferry to Rødbyhavn. Today the train no longer goes on the ferry. But they are building a road/railway tunnel now, to be opened in 2028. That makes a quicker car / rail link from Germany to Denmark.

Besides making it easy to connect multiple MUs together, in theory the turbulence that is generated inside the inflated rubber nose creates an aerodynamic bubble that makes these trains almost as aerodynamic as a pointy train, but this effect only really works above 120 km/h and then stops working around 200 km/h. Since these trains are limited to 180 km/h, they essentially run just below the limit where they aero-cone collapses.

Its a shame you got to ride on one of the non-renovated units, especially since all units were renovated by the end of 2023, you must have been really unlucky (or lucky depending on your perspective :) ) Some of the main differences are: New livery (you can see one at 13:35) New interior including completely new first class seats. Underseat power outlets for all seats Vending machines were replaced with bag storage and a better wheelchair/accessibility area. (As far as I know, the vending machines were already out of use)

Weirdly located power socket, train designed pre-date how common cell phones have become, it was more for the people who had a laptop/similar, for which the power sockets worked rather well, plug in leave the bulky part of the power supply on the arm rest and you're good to go, no cable mess under the table for you or others to trip over or pull your laptop onto the floor.

Apparently the power sockets were put there for vacuum cleaners and weren't originally to be used by passengers.

That round socket has three holes for the live 220 volt current '1', the return wire'0' and the ground wire 'E' in the middle between the first two holes. Computers power cords usually don't have the Earth 'E' pin... Vacuum cleaners need the third 'E' pin to remove static electricity during cleaning procedures.

The Öresund fixed link has improved comunication between Malmö and Copenhagen, but long distance travel has not improved. Back in the Nineties there was a direct train from Oslo to Hamburg. That included two railway ferries. The travel time Hamburg Oslo was then shorter than it is now. Now you have to change trains in Gothenburg and Copenhagen and you need to plan ample connection time.

I am in my fifties. When I were 18 I took an Interrail trip, free trains all over Europe for a month for a cheap price. We began our journey going non stop from Copenhagen over Istanbul to Athens. Just to kick it off. Seems to me trains now are less connected and much more expensive. Heartbreaking considering the climate crisis we are in.

@@Mike-zx1kx there is talk of reinstating Trans-Europe sleeper trains by the end of the 2020s, but the problem is all the European railroads use different signal, power, and safety systems, which makes it difficult to run a direct service between countries. The best way to do it is still to swap locomotives as the trains go into different countries, the same way they used to do with the Orient Express. ETCS is meant to resolve the differences in signal and safety systems, but it is a very expensive system and is only compatible with fairly modern trains that are computer controlled, and even then not all - and since it's expensive and doesn't make a lot of sense for many lines, there is not much incentive to spending billions on installing it everywhere

This line certainly has a quite interesting mix of scenic attractions! At at about 12m 45s you showed the brief stretch by the sea just north of Helsingborg station. Then at circa 14m 30s you showed the seven kms single track seaside section immediately south of Varberg. However this section will soon be replaced by a new double=track tunnel.

FACT Regarding the 'rubber-front' of the train: The rubber is pumped with air and when the train reaches around 80km/h it will form an invisible cone in front of the train, making it extremely aerodynamic. I have personally seen a butterfly sitting peacefully on the outside of the front window whilst the train was running at 180km/h ....

There is a nice alternative route, from Copenhagen to Helsingførs and take the ferry to Helsingborg (the Swedish side), 20'. And then choice of the Øresund train or (different ticket) Swedish snabbatag (fast train). Tickets for Swedish railways can be bought in Pressbyran stores and they look just like till receipts. Seven-Elevens in Denmark sell many types of ticket too.

Great trip. 2-2 for both First and second class aren't good, but since the price between First and Second Class have little difference, so okay. Sadly only vending machine and no trolley service onboard, so you need restock supplies for this trip.

I have traveled from Prague to Stockholm in two days (with some days rest in Kopenhagen). From Kopenhagen I took also the Oresundstog to Malmo, and then the direct intercity to Stockholm if I remember it correctly. The last one was a SJ X2000. The trip was comfortable and a lot of fun. I plan to go with the Snälltaget one day, sound fun :)

Very weird to see this train almost empty... whenever I the connection from Kopenhagen to Kalmar in Sweden, the Öresundtrains were always close to booked out.. And you are right, it gets REALLY cramped when fully booked, due to little legroom and 2+2 configuration even in 1st class.. I love how smooth these trains go, but traveling in them for more like 2 hours, I don't really find even close to comfortable, sadly.. got an old IC 1 from Copenhagen to Hamburg onward, and even in a packed 6er compartment including luggage, it felt more spacious and comfortable, due to the wider and softer seats. I admit, it might be a bigger issue for me, being vlose to 190cm tall and very heavy, but still.. Anyways, a very nice review as always, even more as I know these trains pretty well. A big issue is that the Øresundtrains have to serve three purposes: long-distance trains in Sweden, commuter trains between Copenhagen and Malmö, and commuter trains within Denmark. The last point stopped being relevant about a year ago when they stopped running on the Coat Line commuter railway in Denmark, but they still have to serve both as high-capacity commuter trains between Malmö and Copenhagen, which is a short trip where capacity is most important, but ALSO as long-distance trains where comfort is more important. So they have to compromise. They're very comfortable for a commuter train, but not comfortable enough for an intercity train.

I have just seen an IC12 (4 times IC3), passing the Storebælt, and the reason for the strange noses. They are also able to be separated during the ride, if going to separate places after a common ride. The Tunnel part is of course because the passing of the Airport and landing and starting planes.

the only international train lines from sweden apart from through denmark is the vy Bm-74 from Göteborg to Oslo and SJ snabbtåg Stockholm to Oslo, then you have the Meråker line to Trondheim and the link Luleå-Narvik

Jeg har mest brugt tog på Sjælland, Lolland, Falster, Fyn, Sydjylland, Østjylland og Midt-og NordVestjylland, så jeg mangler hele Vestjylland (Vestkysten)og Nordjylland. That thing looks weird lol requests: Can you review ScotRail class 380 desiro on a journey to Largs? And when you get to Largs I suggest going into either fish works or nardini for something to eat And there is also a ferry to Millport (Cumbrae slip), which takes around 10-20 minutes for a run on the loch shira ferry (Caledonian MacBrayne/calmac)

I first went to Malmö before the bridge and my host in Sweden took us on a ferry tour of the Øresundbroen piers as the roadway hadn't been completed I have since been on the bridge several times the last time was memorable for all the wrong reasons We had booked Stockholm to Copenhagen direct service on the way back from a holiday in Finland. Before Malmö they announced the train was terminating on the Swedish side so we had to transfer to the shuttle trains of Øresundtåg over to Copenhagen. We as a result of the delay arriving in Malmö and the slow connecting train we missed our connection in Copenhagen and spent four hours waiting in the great hall there - with the fabulous hammer beam roof. We did an interesting version of Gothenburg to Oslo once. Travelling by local train to Strömstad, then taking the ferry across to Norway at Sandefjord, climbing the hill to the station then coming into Oslo by local train. The day we travelled was a very wet day and on the local Swedish train were a load of British punks. They all got off at a little station on this line and were going to a Punk camp / festival. They did not look happy that they were going to be camping under the rain LOL.

the limit of 3 unit is only in Sweden, in denmark you can have 5 units, the limit in Sweden, is because of the lower voltage in the overhead powerline, supplying the train. In denmark 5 unit is not used in passenger service, because of the length og the platforme.

SNCB in Belgium had some similar rubber fronted trains too.I think that Israeli Railways have some like that as well.I went on one of those rubber fronted trains years ago but they didn't have a bridge/tunnel then and drove the train onto a ferry between Denmark and Sweden.

It's also one of the most unreliable train services I came across, I commute daily between Malmö and Helsingborg and take now the slower Pågatåg as they're more reliable. Always delays and cancellations for many different reasons. If you you book early enough, the trip with Swedish railway (SJ) from Malmö to Gothenburg is much cheaper and the trains are also much nicer. On 1st class you get complementary coffee and water and there's a Bistro on board....

The fares seem to be cheaper than the UK, but this is a similar distance as that from Manchester to London but takes a lot longer. Equally, this is the kind of train I'd expect to see on a commuter route in this country. It seems you can't have reasonable fares, quick journey times and well equipped trains.

Tring to get from Stockholm to Gothenburg was very confusing for me. All website information was telling me there were no trains due to trackwork and it was not possible to buy a ticket. I couldn't even find any trains around the trackwork area. Finally, I found out (I forget how), that there were, in fact, a limited number of trains going there. SJ do not have accurate information on their website. It may have been Omio that I got the proper information from.

I took one of these trains from Copnhagen to Stockholm, changing at Malmo back in 2005. The fun experience was being on the train, as it literally took a ferry. Yes, there were train tracks on the boat. That was cerainly a novel experience. Perhaps the bridge had not been open at that time.

I recently had a bad experience with Øresundståg over the weekend. I was traveling from Gothenburg to Copenhagen, and the train was delayed by around 20 minutes. This delay led the train operator to cancel the train in Helsingborg, leaving us stranded and unable to catch our night train from Malmö. We had to take a cab which cost us 2000 SEK. I'm uncertain if we will ever be reimbursed for this expense.

Likely due to trackworks with a set start time, or due to the danish on-time requirements. Delayed Öresundtåg get cancelled if they are more than like 10 minutes delayed. Though usually they run all the way to Malmö at least so that other bridge crossing trains are readily available.

These trains at times exceed the maximum service speed of 180 km/h. The highest recorded speed that I have documented is 187 km/h, but I can recall seeing 194 km/h on a trip I unfortunately didn't save.

I use the GPS Speedometer Odometer (Pro) app, which I have found to be highly accurate on those occasions where I could compare it to other reliable speedometers. In any case, I regularly see speeds over 180 km/h, but usually not more than 4 or 5 over. Then again, the train rarely has the opportunity to reach such speeds on my regular route. The whole Öresundståg service really sucks. They are plagued by frequent and often lengthy delays. On the Danish side, on the Swedish side, or both. The level of comfort on board is borderline OK for short commuter trips, but is nowhere near acceptable for 3+ hour journeys. First class is a joke, and there are no amenities of any kind. By Swedish standards this is of course pretty much par for the course. Traveling by train in that country is just a sucky experience.

@@davebowman6497 ATC allows 9 km/h over vehicle maximum speed. (Of course lower if the speed at the line is lower.) Besides the ATC the vehicle itself is limited to 180 so it’s not possible to set a higher speed. Sorry for my english, I hope you understand.

Regarding international trains within Scandinavia, the services between Copenhagen and southern Sweden, up as far north as Gothenburg on the west coast and Karlskrona and Kalmar on the east coast are good - generally hourly. See European Rail Timetables tables 735, 745, 746. However Copenhagen to Stockholm is only about every two hours and takes about 5 hrs 20 mins (ERT 730). Stockholm to Oslo (ERT 750) is only 4=5 trains a day and they take about 5 hrs 30mins. At least Gothenburg to Oslo is now every two hours, but these trains still take 3 hrs 30 mins for a distance of only about 200 miles. (The numerous express coaches along the E6 between Gothenburg and Oslo do the trip in less than four hours.)

@@Fan652w Forgot to mention, on some sections Stockholm-Oslo is worse than Oslo-Gothenburg. Driving from Arvika, the last stop on the route from Stockholm to Oslo, to Oslo is just 5-15 minutes slower than the train depending on the type of train currently used there. On a 2-hour route.

Every year in november i go to Liseberg in göteborg and den ve ride from malmö to Göteborg and ve ride with sj and it kost around 400 or 600 normaly 400 kronas for 2 tickets to Göteborg from malmö with sj x3000/x2000 and for 2 tickets with Öresundståg is 600 kronas or 800 and sj is de high speed train company in Sweden and there trains go 200 and de x3000 it can go 300 but it only goes 200 same with x2000 but it can go 350kmh but it only allowed to go 200 so u go faster with sj and der cheaper weird right?

The recording must surely be pretty old. The unit youre on is an unrennovated X31 and those are all extinct now. Every unit has been renovated which includes a new livery, a new interior with an enlargened flex area, but the vending machines have been removed, refreshed 2nd class seats and brand new 1st class seats, identical to the ones on MTRX' trains. Plus the fact that the renovated unit you see at the end still had a DSB logo on makes it very clear that this is before DSB transferred Öresundståg to Transdev in late 2022. So is this video from all the way back in 2021? If so this review isnt particularly represensative of what the product is like these days at all. Also some notes. Copenhagen Central station sees NO SLEEPER TRAINS! The only Sleeper trains serving the city, the Snälltåget service to Berlin in the summer and Austria in the winter stops at Ørestad and Høje Taastrup, and the SJ Euronight Berlin/Hamburg Stockholm stops exclusively at Copenhagen Airport. Also Snälltåget have started extending some of their daytime Stockholm-Malmö services to Copenhagen, with 1 train per day going to Copenhagen Central, and the first and last train of the day starting/ending at Ørestad and continuing to Berlin as the Night train. And yeah you better stock up in advance for trains going to Denmark in general. The Öresundståg used to be part of DSB and DSB in general does little to no onboard catering. They currently have a person walking through the train selling snacks and instant coffee from a tray onboard Lyntog and Eurocity services for small portions of the total trip but thats it. And the future IC5 EMU's and Talgo sets (the latter being planned for routes as long as a new 9 hour long service from Copenhagen to Amsterdam starting in late 2025) will only feature vending machines and nothing else. And only a single vending machine and single coffee maker for a whole 15 car Talgo train.

What I remember about the Oresundtag (this was quite a while ago) was Swedish people trying to smuggle alcohol and Swedish tax collectors trying to catch them. I only went as far as Malmo though, then changed to the sleeper train to Stockholm, which was nice.

Thanks for an interesting video about a line I have travelled on many times since I first visited Gothenburg in 1993. There is nothing particularly unusual about the 'rubber nose trains' used on the Oresund sevices. As we briefly saw at the beginning of the video, Denmark has a lot of 'rubber nose' trains and they currently provide most of the internal Danish Inter-City services. (But they no longer run to Hamburg.) Nearer home, Belgium has a lot of trains with this 'rubber nose' design.
