The biggest advantage of train travel over airplane is that nobody cares about the weight of your baggage. Unless, as I have just learned, Flixtrain limits you to 20 kg. I feel outraged by this information. I understand the limit on airplane is due to technical and handling reasons but there is no excuse to apply it for a train where you take care of your baggage yourself! Anyway excellent and informative trip report.

Great video! I’m a Stockholm citizen and have seen FlixTrain trains pass by numerous times, but haven’t yet travelled with FlixTrain. When it comes to Hallsberg station, the reason for its size could be that it - except from passing through freight trains - should be able to have several passenger trains calling at the same time. Hallsberg may not be a particularly large town, but it’s geographical location is very important, since several railways connect at Hallsberg. When it comes to train services, there are e.g. at least two regional train routes to choose from when travelling between Hallsberg and Stockholm (one route runs north of Lake Mälaren, meanwhile the second route runs along the same railway as FlixTrain - in other words south of Lake Mälaren). Looking forward to your future video reviews!

This is what rail privatisation looks like when it works, with genuine competition between operators and customers getting a genuine choice in service. In this case you get a basic service at an excellent price with low cost airline style ticketing service.

@@NonstopEurotrip My preference was the Blue Train, which whilst relatively slow, offered a first class restaurant service and a bar with sofa and super fast internet. Found it better to have breakfast or lunch on the train and work in the 1st class, rather than go 1st class on the X2000. It had stopped running due to track access issues due to work on the line before Covid, but understood they planned to restart Spring 2020, but Covid killed it.

@grahamariss21112 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsrowland Sadly the Blue Train was suspended due to the capacity limitations that came with the track renewal in Autumn 2019 and was due to restart in Spring 2020, however Covid happened, I suspect we will not see it return. Because as well as the 1st class dining experience, they used to have a couple of 2nd class coaches which they sold at lower price than the other services, however that market has now been moved into by Flix and with at least 4 different services (2 SJ, 2 independent) on this route now, not sure there is capacity for a 5th operator. However when it was running, Gothenburg to Stockholm with Breakfast or dinner cost the same as 1st Class SJ X2000 service which was quicker but only offered coffee and biscuits and did not have such quick wifi.

This might be what rail privatization looks like when it’s working out for the consumer. But I’m always suspicious towards companies like this. How will the lower prices affect the on board personnel? Poor compensation for inconvenient working hours, poorer pensions and social benefits, working without collective agreement and even union suppression is not uncommon. But I don’t know flixtrain that well, although mtr had a few scandals regarding precarious employment in their first years operating. Overall I’m very critical of private companies operating within sectors of societal importance like healthcare, infrastructure and telecommunication. I do miss Blå Tåget though. The piano bar was great.

After switching to driving on the right for cars in 1967, they seem to not have implemented that for trains. All the double track footage you showed, the train drives on the left. My Farmor (Grandmother) is from Jönköping and my Farfar (Grandfather) is from Göteborg. As a side note, when many Swedes immigrated to America, the reason they primarily settled in Minnesota (and Wisconsin and Illinois) because of the large swath of forests and lakes and weather reminded them of home. I hope your travels to Scandinavia allowed to you to travel aboard the famous The Flåm Line which is a 20.2-kilometer long railway line between Myrdal and Flåm in Aurland Municipality, in Vestland county, Norway. A branch line of the Bergen Line, it runs through the valley of Flåmsdalen and connects the mainline with Sognefjord. Hehe you passed by my town during that trip, though it wasn’t seen in the video. Saw some familiar sights though, like Falköping which I passed by a lot (and it’s some 25-30 minutes by train from my town) when I went to high school in a town north of Skövde and took the train at least twice weekly (boarding school) to get to and from school. If I go to Stockholm at all these days, I use MTR Express or MTRX as they go under now. By far the best option as far as efficiency, service and prices go. I’ve been using MTRX almost exclusively since 2015 because they’re just that good and so much more affordable than SJ X2000 which is the other option for me (I can’t handle the double decker regional trains due to their long travel time as I live with severe chronic pain)
@NonstopEurotrip Жыл бұрын
I'm yet to try MTRX, but I will for sure soon! 😃
@ReyOfLight Жыл бұрын
@@NonstopEurotrip They’re amazing! Always great staff on the trains and you get about the same travel time as SJ X2000 and the latter is a lot more expensive! There’s a cafe onboard like on X2000 as well. In my experience MTRX is also very punctual, they’re only late if there’s issues along the tracks, and they tend to be very good at informing passengers in a timely manner and then do their best to try to catch up to minimize the delay. Some years ago when I was going to Stockholm for a meeting, there were some signal issues or something so trains were having big delays, I got a text message informing me about the delays before I even left home to go to the train station 15km from home (my town does have a train station but express trains don’t stop here, only regional trains do) The only downside with MTRX in my experience is the seat comfort, the seats are quite hard. For someone of full health it might not be an issue, but for me with chronic pain it can be a hassle even with the journey being just under 3 hours

I'm curious, do people in Europe not fly, at least internally? Here in Australia, it's much cheaper to fly from Sydney to Melbourne, for example, than to take the train down (which is sad IMO), is this not so in Europe? I've never been to Europe so have no idea of course :) In saying that, only paying about $20 AUD base fare for a 455 km trip is a real bargain. A similarly distanced trip, Sydney to Wagga for example, takes 6 hours and fares start at $63 AUD or 40 EUR.
@drdewott91543 жыл бұрын
People here often fly but mostly over longer distances like say Stockholm-Paris. But for smaller domestic corridors like Stockholm-Gothenburg then 125mph rail is very much a viable alternative. I mean factoring in the time to get to and from the airport and the time you need to spend there for security and baggage check in and reclaim then it's actually faster to take the train than to go by air. But for routes where the rail links are currently subpar like Copenhagen-Oslo then yeah the airlines have the trump card. In some regions like Denmark, the bus companies like Flixbus are also seeing big growth. But more so due to them being liberalized and at a faster rate than the Intercity rail sector
@NonstopEurotrip2 жыл бұрын
It's very much a thing to use highspeed (200kmh+) rail for journeys of up to 3-4 hours. There's lots of competition now especially in Spain and Italy, and indeed Sweden so to answer your question, Yes! 😄

@arokh72 Domestic flights often make less sense. My own experience is, that if there is a train, and the ride takes less than six* hours, then typically the market for train is better than for flying, i.e. sufficient for competitive prices and frequencies. To me, a rather typical comparison would be Hamburg to Copenhagen or Munich. Airfare is typically comparable with, or more expensive than, 1st class in train. Nominal flight time is 1 hour, the train ride takes 5 hours. But in the end, the total travel time doesn't differ much, the cost for travelling to and from the airport is easy to forget, and most of the time on the train can be used to thinking, reading, or dozing. */ Six hours is of course not written in stone.
@arokh722 жыл бұрын
@@jmolofsson I suppose that also comes down to me not realising how close European cities really are. One of the world's busiest air routes, pre pandemic, being the Sydney - Melbourne run is about a 1 hour flight vs a 12 hour train trip. Plus you can fly between those cities for

I mean this was still recorded mid pandemic. Sweden's covid restrictions may have been light but the pandemic still causes people to travel less. Especially when it comes to people booking tickets a long time in advance which is Flixtrains primary target group. The fact that Flixtrain is still incredibly new to the Swedish market, only half a year old as of now, also means many people still dont know about the service or how good or bad it is yet.

Merci, nonstop eurotrip !

The seats in the Flixtrain are very narrow and the overall ambience doesn't seem very cozy. There is no extra area with 1st class seats. The X2000 is the better and more comfortable option for a relaxed train ride than these noisy former InterRegio wagons from Germany.

Welcome to the Swedish Lifestyle! Where all your things in your house come from Ikea & the cheapest long-distance trip is just from €12.99. Woo-hoo! Meanwhile in the Spanish Lifestyle, you can have a coffee between €1 & €2 on a café, the cheapest baguette bread costs €0.20 & the cheapest long-distance journey is just from €7 16:30 That's a pity 19:56 But it goes from €12.99 21:56 I'd like to ride on Flixtrain Germany! From €4.99, I can go from Berlin to any major city in the country. That's what I call "cheapness & savingness" 22:35 Video's score: 7.3 (Sorry, dude, but Flixtrain Germany, Renfe Avlo & Ouigo, even in France or Spain, are much cheaper)
@anderslarsen60093 жыл бұрын
You can't compare Sweden or any of the Nordic countries to Spain. The cost of living is much higher and that will reflect on the ticket prices. And to say that everyone in Sweden lives in Ikea homes is just stupid. Its like saying that every person in Spain drinks Sangria and eats Paella.
