They are trying to make the game easier to make it seem like players are getting better. They think this sells, when in reality stiff competition sells. This is why any player who chases superteams, or cries for fouls constantly, will never have my respect (not that any of them care, but my 2 cents anyway).

The refs ejecting playing over getting insulted is so dumb
@ExcaliburSonictheKing
@ExcaliburSonictheKing 10 ай бұрын
They are not even insults to begin with. People are getting ejected for just being confused or making the most harmless gestures or getting techs for what it looks like, absolutely no reason which is just refs sacrificing actual good officiating for power. And to top it all off, defense is slowly deteriorating which leads to meaningless 3 point contest and high scoring games record games becoming a daily thing, players flopping like fish and being incredibly soft, and people getting easy free throws while building up their stats it's like everyone in the NBA are just stat padders. The NBA today is just absolutely atrocious. The 90s and 2000s NBA was actually good, and Adam Sipver ruined everything David Stern did corrently.
@Gaunerchen
@Gaunerchen 10 ай бұрын
Direct insults I think should be called. You dont want players cussing out referees all game just because they are frustrated. But just criticizing and questioning refs shouldnt be a foul for sure. And taunting should definitely be allowed, it makes the game more interesting for everyone.

Zone was played all the way back in the 80s. There is very clear cut footage of zone being used to defend Dr J. The Pistons openly talked about using zone on MJ. It was used consistently throughout the 90s.

@coldsnap5742 It’s common knowledge if you’re not new to the game or under the age of 25. I just hate that it’s used as a reason to try and elevate modern players. Like no, it has been used all throughout the modern game. The main defensive changes that occurred were 3 sec and hand checking (the video creator got that part right).
@karimglasgow5518
@karimglasgow5518 10 ай бұрын
Narrator's correct that zone was illegal until after 01. The old "illegal defense" violation was basically that - team got caught trying to play zone. The legalization of zone and implementation of defensive 3 secs went hand in hand; the idea was to boost scoring. I remember not quite understanding how that made any sense - and really, it didn't, not for the 2001 NBA - but maybe the league was smarter than I gave them credit for and knew that teams would adjust over time and start prioritizing long distance shooting. The "zone" that was being used on Doc, MJ, etc. was a combination of 1) 80s/90s halfcourt floor spacing that allowed defenders to help more easily w/o being far enough away from your actual assignment to get called for it, and 2) flat out illegal defense that didn't get called. Unless you were up against someone like Reggie Miller, perimeter defenders would play like 10 feet off their guy and the refs were good with it. So I mean, you're not wrong that teams played zone before the 01 rule changes, but the narrator isn't wrong about the rule changes.
@Anthonydu01630
@Anthonydu01630 10 ай бұрын
But it was illegal, same thing with hand checking todays, it’s illegal but it happens every games, you can’t defend a Lebron, a Zion, Giannis, Jokic, Embiid or ANT without putting your hands on them, just look at Jokic scares on his arms …
@shaft9000
@shaft9000 10 ай бұрын
Many rules from handchecking to continuation are written to be judged "at the referees discretion", and were never "made illegal" nor "legal"as people assume(d). The rules are intentionally written to be vague and so become easier for hack referees to justify in procedural language - as the refs are informed to, by a league office in a memo any day of the week. This ain't rocket science. It's ju$t entertainment in the form of a game played on a mock-"court" in which theft is legal and itself _valued_ as a key defensive play.
@XxDotApRoxX69
@XxDotApRoxX69 5 ай бұрын
Zone was illegal and called a foul. Prior to the rule change MJ himself said it would slow him down. Here's the quote: "Jordan was making an impassioned plea before the competition committee that had gathered to consider rules changes to enliven the NBA game. Jordan spoke passionately. If teams were able to play zone defenses, he said, he never would have had the career he did." I'll believe MJ over some rando on the internet.

I'll always bring up the HUGE changes that have happened to dribbling and what is considered traveling or holding the ball, every single play in todays game would be a foul just 10-15 years ago, not to mention 20+. This video doesn't even come close to showcasing how crazy it is. People act like players are just better at ball handling but in reality the vast majority of it is just that the player in possession of the ball can basically do whatever they want with the ball now giving them much more ability to make crazy plays. Its super interesting looking at all the rules changes for dribbling over the years and seeing breakdowns of what used to be called as travel, highly recommend anybody to look into it.

the league actually started favoring the offense in 91 by introducing flagrant fouls, 94 you couldnt hand check past the three pt line, 96 allen iverson was getting away with carrys and double dribbles constantly. its 90s stans that hate todays game but dont realize that it was their era that started making offense easier to play. also the games offensive increase isnt about making it more fun to watch or easier for offense, it was to increase more sportsmanship like play. so actually what youre whining about was happening over 30 years ago! in your favorite era you love to dick ride!!!!!!

I guess they think people who worked real hard to become one of the very best in the world should never talk about it.

That’s why March has become my favorite month for ball. Beyond just getting to see my alma mater play I just prefer the focus on team play, solid defense, and much better tournament structure from the NCAA than the NBA. The energy at games is also just way better than the pro league so this whole idea that only offense sells tickets is a farce.

Getting? It's been soft ever since The Pistons beat The Lakers in the finals lol The NBA lost alot of money. And that's all they care about. The owners and players are greedy. Players don't play for the fans just themselves. That's why I'm done with pro sports. If its just a business and loyalty respect and the fans dont matter then no reason to watch.

Maybe offensively they are getting better but I'm sorry you cannot say that they are getting alot better by exploiting the rules of the game itself. How are you supposed to enjoy the game when the games rules are broken non stop all game? You can stop that, you enforce the rules again simple as that. You call every double dribble, every travel and so on.
@alyxsatyr3585
@alyxsatyr3585 10 ай бұрын
@tiktokformenofculture9753 I agree that players are better offensively. But what you can't ignore is the fact that a huge majority of that is due to the huge increase in 3pt shooting, more space on defense, and also as discussed above, the rules being exploited constantly by players. If they called every double dribble and travel and didn't give players points for flopping as well as hand checking and better defense then the scoring would definitely not be as high. I won't argue that players are better offensively but the reason it looks way better is because of those reasons not because of a huge difference in skill.

@tiktokformenofculture9753 The three point shot is great but the mid range game is completely dead. The players chucking up threes all game is not fun to watch or entertaining. I've seen many clips of lebron flopping that are 100% flops but I'm not getting into that and I'm not just referring to lebron I'm referring to all players. And people get fouled for breathing on someone and the reason the free throws are lower is because players are just wide open driving to the basket and just shooting 3s with a hand somewhat in their face. And as far as the kobe thing kobe grew up and played initially in the handchecking Era and was effective before it was eradicated. It just became slightly easier for him after it was taken out and even then the defense was still miles better then today. And you didn't mention the double dribble and traveling either because it's a fact, players exploit this all the time and have no repercussions. And I'm not saying either that Lukas 73 and those players games aren't good all I'm saying is that it's aided by these factors.

@tiktokformenofculture9753 The talent pool is bigger today so every team even The lesser teams have super stars. Joe Johnson, Danny granger, and Jermaine o Neal weren't super stars they were borderline stars that faced injurys. And the thing about lebron is because unlike kobe, lebron has played even further into the softer area where players whine about everything and load management is at its peak. And also because lebron has hopped teams to fit around him to win Championships and kobe never did that. And for the fouls, the fouling has become ridiculous when compared to the 1990s and even early 2000s where players could get away with trash talking and hard fouling people without getting a flagrant foul or a technical. And now because you can't touch someone while driving or taking a shot it increases scoring because people get fouled easily behind the 3 point line too which leads to 3 free throws or potentially 4 point plays. And if you watch the old 1990s you can definitely tell the fouls were called for harder fouls and not just touching someone on the wrist.

Guys, remember the time when Mt. Mutombo was allowed to wag his finger at opponents after blocking their shots? That was fun to watch! Players were allowed to stare people down after dunking on them! It used to be much tougher to score, especially with drives to the basket, because defenders were allowed to hand-check you and bigs were allowed to man the middle! So, we saw some defense! Some resistance! Now the lane opens up like when Moses parted the Red Sea, you can't touch a guy, there's no big manning the middle, and you have shooters all over the place, which is fine, but could you please bring back hand-checking and allow bigs to man the middle? I don't wanna see any more incidents like when Tim Duncan was tossed outta the game just for laughing! Or when Giannis got a technical just for staring someone down after he dunked on him! These things are ridiculous! Plus load management, plus the past few all-star games being a disgrace to the game! Back in the 90s, I remember being impressed when Richard Dumas and Latrell Sprewell averaged 15 points in their rookie seasons! Now, I hear about 50, 60 and 70 points all the time and I wanna throw up, because where's the defense?

Rodman would be "almost unplayable"? He is the most valuable player of all time. He would be even better today, with managers like Morey that can recognize value. In his era, people didn't understand that 3s, layups, free throws, spacing, gravity, and rebounding have immense value in basketball. They thought SCORING was value (many still do). His defense wasn't even elite, it MIGHT have been above average. His rebounding is so freakishly good that he would be an AMAZING add to the GSW of the recent run. Put him instead of the Zaza or instead of Chris Paul or instead of almost any >5th best player on a recent championship GSW team, and they improve. Massively. That's absolutely disgusting! That's what player value is. Making great(est?) teams even better. I'd rather have someone who creates gravity and can shoot and space plus Rodman on my team than two players who hog lots of possessions and score inefficiently and can't play defense and don't rebound.

If the offensive player initiates contact it's an offensive foul or no call at the discretion of the ref. The only exception to this is if the defender performs a flagrant foul after contact. Else they have free reign once the offensive player initiates the play. That one rule change would completely change the game for the better. They need to enforce traveling, double dribble, and carrying too. It's ridiculous what offensive players are allowed to get away with.

8:04 Lol bro people are not better at dribbling now than they were before it's easy to look fancy when people can't put hands on you. That's part of the problem I mean you mentioned it early in the video then you go and say "todays players are better" they really aren't they just are lucky the rules handicap the defenders. It's not just the hand checking and 3 seconds either it's the fact that they don't call travels or carries and at the same time call ticky tacky fouls and make the game inconsistent. All these things together have made the product unwatchable.

There's a number of changes that they should make including this. It's probably my number one bring something back. Still can't make them wanna play hard nose defense regardless of the rule changes. It's one thing to play hard defense and keep getting cheap ticky tack fouls called but a lot of these players aren't even trying to play defense anymore.
