My favorite Chamberlain stat was his overall stats during the 1966-67 season. Proving he was no one-dimensional player, Wilt had changed up his game: his PPG was down but his shooting % was through the roof. Wilt averaged nearly 8 assists per game too. The 76ers won the NBA Championship that season and Wilt won the MVP award.

Blocks were not an "official" stat for the NBA during Wilt's career, but they were an internal stat for a number of teams. In the 150-odd games he played for organizations that kept track, he averaged 8.8 Blocks Per Game.

@AnAverage2KMobilePlayer Mark Eaton currently holds the NBA record for blocks per game at 3.5. So that means even if Wilt did average what you think he would still hold that record and almost double it. And not only that but Mark Eaton owes his NBA career to Wilt Chamberlain. Because Wilt saw him play and talked to him afterwards. This was what happened: “Look young fella, you’re never going to catch that guy,’ Eaton remembered, “And more importantly, it’s not really your job. He said come here, so he grabbed me and he took me out on the court and he put me right in front of the basket and he said you see this basket behind you, your job is to stand here and block shots, your job is to stop the other players from getting to the basket, collect the rebound and then throw it up to the guard, let them go down to the other end and score it and then your job is to kind of cruise up to half court and see what’s going on.”

Actually that 8.8 blocks is for games on film that was preserved. If you look at the stat sheets from the games it would be double digits easy. The stat guy who did the quint game was an official stat keeper for the NBA, and he was tracking blocks and assists (many teams did), but the NBA just did not ingest these stats and keep them in their official records.

His quintuple double is the best game in NBA history by a mile. 53 points, 32 rebounds, 14 assists, 24 fucking blocks, and 11 steals. Every single one of those numbers are insane. On any night, if a player reached any one of these, it would be a great game. Hell if you got 24 blocks I would be impressed beyond belief. Even if I saw the footage I would still probably believe you faked it. 11 steals is insane. Actually ridiculous. Even assists, the stat of his that's the least insane, is still amazing. The only game that's even ony the discussion as the greatest game is his 100 point game, but I don't feel like it's particularly close. You could feasibly, given the right circumstances, get to 100. It would be crazy difficult, but it would be possible. No way in a million years could you ever reach either 32 rebounds or 24 blocks, let alone together. It's just not possible. 11 steals is just barely possible, but stretching it a little bit. 14 assist could be consistently done if you're someone like Stockton or Magic, but is otherwise an outlier for any player. 50 points can't be consistently done, other then Wilt. Not even Jordan or Kobe could average even 40 for a season, let alone 50. To combine them all is truly ridiculous. There will never be a game better then that. The universe will end before that game is beaten.

Wilt's shot blocking ability was insane. Wilt wouldn't just block the ball when the ball was released, he'd often times wait until the ball was on it's way to the hoop then go up and get it at it's apex. To do that you'd have to be not only 7'2" with a crazy wing span, you'd have to be a great leaper to get that high up to be able to block the shot. I've never seen any other center do that as well or as often as Wilt. What Wilt was able to do is just ridiculous!

Wilt was an awesome team player towards the end of his career with the lakers . In the era when it was so tough playing man to man defense , Wilt was incredibly unselfish about how he would set up Jerry west , Gail goodrich , and happy Hairston among others with great passing assists and setting crushing picks to get players free for difficult and important game deciding shots!!! The year the Lakers won 69 games and a 33 game winning streak , Wilt made a crushing pick in the all star game that year for the winning shot put up by his great teammate Jerry West!!!! This was a fantastic all star game east vs west , I think one of the best I have ever watched !!! I don't watch the games anymore , I think it's all watered down entertainment ! I'm not minimizing the quality of players in the Michael Jordan , Isaiah Thomas , Shaquille Oneil era because these are all phenomenal players alike and don't allow me to exclude David Robinson from this list , but : since then I think that the game has changed so much that it holds no fascination for me in it's basic scheme of how it is now played !!!

In the 2 games prior to the 1962 All-Star Game, Wilt scored 73 points, grabbed 36 rebounds, and shot 29-48 from the floor against HOF center Walt Bellamy. Chamberlain followed that up with a 62 point, 28 rebound, 27-48 from the floor effort against HOF center Bill Russell. In the 1962 All-Star Game, Wilt scored a then All-Star record 42 points, he grabbed 24 rebounds, and shot 17-23 from the floor. These performances were against the greatest winner (e.g., Bill Russell) in NBA history, and the most underrated center (e.g., Walt Bellamy) in NBA history. If the 6'11" 250 pound Bellamy played in today's game, he would be the NBA's best center and 1 of the 5 highest paid players in the league.

Why do they talk about the old-time greats in MLB, NHL, and NFL, but Wilt is ignored? What are people afraid of? As I kid I loved Wilt. I was too young to see him play, but I saw the films and read a few books on him. He's a fascinating athlete. He beat Jim Brown in a footrace, excelled in track and field, was even drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, holds some 70s records that are literally untouchable, and played professional vollyball in his 40s. He had a vertical leap of 48 inches, benched 600 pounds, and could fly and leap like no other. For sports fans, I really suggest you watch more videos of him actually playing as well as read up on who he was. Amazing athlete and man.

Wilt's most overlooked record is that he is the only player in NBA history to record a 30-30 in a playoff series. In the 1965 East Finals, Chamberlain dominated Russell to the tune of 30.1 points and 31.4 rebounds. In Game 7 of that series, Wilt scored the last 6 points of the game to put the 76ers within 1 point of the heavily favored Celtics. Russell then hit one of the basket support wires on an inbounds pass, so the 76ers had the ball with only 5 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, Greer's inbounds pass was stolen by Havlicek and the rest is history. Chamberlain also had the greatest playoff run (e.g., 1967 playoffs) in NBA history. In 15 playoff games, Wilt averaged 21.7 points, 29.1 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 9.2 blocked shots. If the award existed at the time, Wilt would have been named the Finals MVP as the record breaking 1966-1967 76ers (e.g., 68-13 record after blasting out of the gate with a 46-4 record) won their first NBA title.

While he talked about Wilt's playing time I didn't hear him mention that Wilt averaged over 48 minutes a game one season with all the OT games. Something else I heard about him but, didn't witness personally was that before games, during warm-ups, somebody would put quarters on TOP of the backboard and he would jump up and pull them off!

Actually, Wilt averaged over 48 min per game for his career! OT games put him over the 48. Goat!

@@Donnachaidh07 Not true. Wilt averaged 45.8 mpg over his pro career. It was only in 1961 when he was with the Warriors that he topped the 48 mpg mark.

The best athlete we've ever seen. Verified 40" vertical for a man of his size; he was a complete athlete in the NCAA (shot put, triple jump, high jump, 100 yards dash *they run the yards dash back then), etc. The sad thing about his career. The false claims surrounding his career : 20, 000 women; 50 inches vertical; 600 pounds on the bench; etc. Chamberlain don't need those myths to be bigger than life. His basketball credentials were insanely impressive. Also, there was a phenomenon back then explaining why Chamberlain's team (or any one man heavy scoring load) were coming short in the playoffs : "The Wilt Chamberlain Paradox". It wasn't because his team's weren't talented. Thinking Basketball explicitly tackled this subject lately. Sorry for that aside, but Alex Hannum explained this situation in his book : "The Wilt Chamberlain Paradox". It wasn't an easy change for neither Chamberlain or his team; Wilt Chamberlain was constantly complaining to reporters about his new roles after games... Until Alex Hannum almost fought Chamberlain in the locker room! After this incident, Chamberlain accepted completely his roles and became a MVP & the best version of himself in 1967!

Yeah thinking basketball take is interesting but lack substance. I don't think he was well informed. Like for one why he was scoring alot, the owner Eddie instructed he wanted him to drop buckets every night. Far as his 20k women, who to say it didn't happen. Fidel Castro claims 35k and no one bats a eye. Also Wilt won his first mvp as a rookie.

@@coachwane Lacked substance? He used footage and advance metrics in order to paint a picture or dress a profile of said player. Most of the times, he is right on the target, despite other KZbinrs or TV analysts barely scratching the surface. The Jordan's analysis was the perfect example. He talked about a lot of things older fans like me were saying about Jordan's game. Nowadays, his fans and ESPN are basically saying Jordan is perfect, which is a lie. On another note, scoring a lot of points was flattering Chamberlain's ego too. In the book : "Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and the Golden Era of Basketball", page 192 : Chamberlain was unyielding to his coach demands : Hannum asked Wilt to take fewer shots, set a few shots for his teammates (passing out of the blocks), running to protect his own basket (on some possessions, Chamberlain was just trotting on defense). The coach ask Chamberlain to change and despite Philadelphia incredible season (they were winning more games), Chamberlain was often complaining to reporters about his new role after a win : team efficiency was through the roof, they were playing better defensively, etc. So, yes... Chamberlain high scoring inputs wasn't the best options for his teams. When Chamberlain finally changed in his mindset in 1967 after the Hannum-Chamberlain incident I've talked about, Chamberlain became the best version of himself. Guy Rodgers talked about that change and how it impacted his teammates game.

Wilt was the greatest athlete in human history. No one else is even close and no one has come close to this day. They had to change the rules and the courts dimensions after he showed up. He actually averaged a triple double for his entire career if blocks had been counted in those days. Kind of puts to rest everyone trying to claim that athleticism wasn't invented until james came into the league.
