Thank John Wooden and Pat Riley, the greatest coaches in their respective eras. Wooden won 7 straight national championships for UCLA with different teams. He won his first 2 with guards, his next one with forwards, his next 1 with the backcourt players, and the last 3 with Centers. That's a great coach. Riley was a beast of a coach in the 80's. He actually is one of the few good NBA players to make a great coach later on. Riley played with Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor , and Jerry west in the 1970's as a Laker. Having played against Kareem, he must have been thankful to have the big fella on his side when coaching.

If you wanna see Kareem’s greatness, look at Bucks’ record year before he was drafted vs rookie year and look at Bucks’ record during time he was injured in 75 vs rest of that season. Then realize he had 12 more years as an efficient volume scorer while serving his positional role of a rim protector and board machine after that Bucks stretch.

The thing that was amazing about his skyhook was the range on it. He was accurate with that thing from 15-20’, not just in the post, and if an off defender fell asleep he’d fake the hook and dump it down low to a cutter for an easy layup. He was an outstanding passer, defender, even FT shooter, there were no holes in his game.

So hard to compare Kareem, a center, to MJ, a guard, and of course Lebron, more of a power 3-man. They are all freakishly good in their own positions, and although I find it impossible to compare their talents, they do bring up some fantastic stats to argue that Kareem is the GOAT. Funny how Kareem is normally left out (not to mention Bill Russell and Wilt), and everyone simply narrows it down to MJ and Lebron.

In my opinion I think it’s because Kareem couldn’t win without Magic. He won one championship in 1971, but from 1972-1979 he didn’t win anything. If he won 1 championship at least, things can and probably will change.

@@scgamer ah...but he did win a championship without Magic. Johnson was in elementary school when Lew hoisted the trophy. That would be easy to pick on any player. Watch this example...Michael Jordan couldnt win without Scottie Pippen. That is literally true. Jabbar won the title with a recent expansion team in 1971 but Jordan didn't. Let's be serious.

Because he was not that physically strong down low and also not a great rebounder. He did block shots during his younger years though. During his lean years when the Lakers were not contenders, he was criticized for taking his time to reach the front court. And as made famous in Airplane, people thought he coasted during the regular season.

Honestly, he's the ONLY player that can be argued being better than Jordan. He won a championship early in his career for an unpopular team, and then won several more all the way till late his career while being still very potent. The fact that his first and last titles are 17 years apart, and that his FMVP titles are 14 years apart, shows true longevity. Both lebron and Jordan took a long while before they were able to start winning. Kareem was a winner right from the get go.
