That is always completely misrepresented. With Shaq incoming, and West coveting Kobe, he set about finding the highest pick he could get for Vlade Divac, who was a very good center in the NBA (and came back to haunt the Lakers as a huge part of that great Kings team). The best he could get was Charlotte, and it wasn't even a trade for the 13th pick yet. It was contingent entirely on Kobe being available to pick for the Lakers when it was their turn. If not, no trade, the Hornets use the pick for themselves. They were not highly interested in Kobe pre-draft, and would not have picked him if he was still around at 13, and Lakers hadn't come calling.

My personal worst trade is Bobby Jones for George McGinnis (Denver traded Jones to Philly for McGinnis). Denver traded away the best defensive player at the time to the team with the best offensive player (Dr. J) for a so-so forward in McGinnis (yeah, I know he was considered better but he didn't show it in Denver). I knew one of the owners of the Nuggets at that time, family friend, and told him they made a HUGE mistake in trading away Bobby Jones. The Nuggets the first year with McGinnis had a barely winning season, and Jones went on with the Sixers winning an NBA title with Dr. J & Moses Malone a couple of years later.

The Kobe Bryant trade was actually a great trade, Charlotte drafted him knowing that he would never play for them but that they could get a good player for him, he alluded to the fact that he only wanted to play for the Lakers maybe the Sixers, but Charlotte was gutsy enough to hold Bryant's rights hostage to make sure the Lakers didn't just get a free pass to Kobe, of course Kobe was way better than Vlade Divac. Also technically you can't consider Kobe Bryant a lifelong Laker if he was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets.
@Tyrunner00972 жыл бұрын
There are honestly a LOT worse trades in NBA history than the Kareem trade. Short of trading him for ANOTHER Kareem, "experts" were going to call this a one-sided trade. This trade was actually a pretty good one for the Bucks. Bridgeman became one of the best 6th Man in the league, and Winters averaged 19 per game his first 4 years with the Bucks and was a 2x All-Star. They kept the team afloat through the lean years of the late 70s until the Bucks drafted Sidney Moncrief and Marques Johnson and began the "Nelly Ball" era of the 80s.

6:38 Red engineered the trade for the draft rights to Russell before the draft, there was NO "Russell wasn't intended to play with the Celtics". However, it did COST - Red traded away a multi-time established All Star (Ed Macauley) and 2 future Hall of Fame members (Ed and Cliff Hagan) AND some off-court stuff to get Russell, and was very happy with the results. It wasn't a total loss for the Hawks though - they DID beat the Russell-led Celtics behind Bob Pettit, Macauley, and Hagan in the 1958 Finals - the ONLY time that Russell lost a championship series (and Alex Hannum as coach was also the only man to ever defeat the Russell-era Celtics TWICE in the playoffs, once with Atlanta and once with the WIlt-led 76ers).

Some others: 1980: The Warriors send Robert Parish and the #3 overall pick to the Celtics for the #1 and 13 overall picks. The Celtics get Parish, Mchale, and three titles. The Warriors get Joe Barely Cares, and don't make the playoffs for seven more years. 2011: The Pacers trade Kawhi Leonard to the Spurs for George Hill. This trade didn't hurt the Pacers as much as it helped the Spurs. They may not have won another chip without this trade.

Also, as a Knicks fan I remember this one. A god awful Knicks team that needed their picks trades for Eddy Curry. Those picks became LaMarcus Aldridge and Joakim Noah.
@Mastaace2 жыл бұрын
That trade is worse than 80% of this list at least. A dude I knew from High School once wrote an article for RealGM trying to build and even worse team with the amount of money Isiah Thomas wasted back then.
@charlottecorday84942 жыл бұрын
Even if the Knicks had drafted them, they just would have wasted them anyways.

@3:47 it says Robert Traylor played for "Michigan State" while the video shows him playing for Michigan. It's still a good video, I gave it a like.
@nosferatu73254 жыл бұрын
Your video could not be more wrong! Kobe was never going to play for Charlotte. He said don’t draft me and wouldn’t come to Charlotte for a work-out. They made the best out of the situation.

Some of these pictures are synched up weird. You've got Barkley being drafted with the year 1976 in the background and then you go on to talk about the Sixers missing the playoffs in 1991-1992 and there's a photo of Barkley with Dr. J and Mo Cheeks. Very odd.
@Riles31524 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call the Vlade/Kobe trade one of the worst ever. Obviously Kobe became an all-time great, but Vlade was still a decent to good center. Those Charlotte teams he was on from 96-98 won 54 and 51 games.
@bricefleckenstein96664 жыл бұрын
9:30 Barkley was IMO the second-best PF in the league - behind Kevin McHale - but the point COULD be argued as Kevin was starting to slow down a bit. What can't be argued was that he was the best player the 76ers had left at that point - and it wasn't even close.

Yeah no the OKC was Harden being selfish
@grewdordon4 жыл бұрын
Harden wasn’t being selfish. He considered himself worthy of a max contract as other superstars on the team, which he was. Harden was still deciding if he was willing to settle for less and then the Thunder traded him away.
