It is amazing all the things they help with. You hear speech therapist and you think speech ONLY but it helps with drinking, eating, and so much more.
@prettifulmuffin Жыл бұрын
The field acknowledges this therapy. What we don’t acknowledge is oral motor exercises for speech (articulation) therapy. We used to but now we know that science says this doesn’t help. What I saw here was teaching Abby to turn her voice on/off, teaching articulation placement for vowel sounds (bubbles)-both of which are evidence based. In regards to feeding therapy, we can definitely use exercises/tools to strengthen/compensate the mechanics in the feeding/swallowing process. I didn’t see anything controversial. Any SLPs disagree? P.S. I am TOTALLY using that hack of using a straw to blow bubbles!
@fatheringautism Жыл бұрын
The hard part with the straw is removing it from the equation. We still can’t get the lips to form without the straw as a prompt.
@rebecca1995 Жыл бұрын
I took NDT certification and we were told by a neurologist that the motor pathways for feeding/swelling are not the same for articulation therapy. If you choose to use oral motor therapy facilitation techniques you have to immediately follow up with sound activity. Even then it's controversial.
@sweariefaerie9621 Жыл бұрын
Abbie seems to enjoy her lessons, and that's so awesome. And the teacher clearly knows how to roll with Abbie in order to get the work done without pushing more than is necessary. As for controversy... I feel like whether Abbie chooses to speak in the future is her choice. But I think she's absorbing all of the knowledge behind it. Either way, I think it's great that she's learning and growing, and you're all doing an incredible job. 🥰

@@jennbeth1 I agree to your comment completely, I think it's being misunderstood tho because it's blunt. Idk if u meant to be snarky or not, and I guess it doesn't matter. To others commenting, I believe you are jumping to conclusions. Yes, Abbie typically doesn't care about the camera, because she's so used to it and there are definitely days she doesn't want to be filmed and she makes that known (and they respect her wishes too). A lot of kids act differently in a learning setting when the parents are in the room watching OR when there is a camera on. Abbie is comfortable at home, but also goes to the clinic for the same therapy, so that's a change of environment. Asa and Cilla are staring at her, because it's interesting and they are learning how to teach her as well, AND the camera is on. It absolutely makes sense that she may easily be distractable or ornery or pushing back a little. 💕

Hello!! I am such a big fan of your channel and have really enjoyed watching your sweet girl grow and learn over the past year or more!! My mom was an audiologist for 37 years for the school district in Pensacola, Florida! Her office was located inside of a school and I went to school in the county next to the one she worked in that went on summer vacation two weeks earlier than hers. So my mom would take me to work with her for those two weeks. I would almost instantly become overwhelmed with boredom, so my mom would walk me down the hall to one of the deaf education or special education classes and I would learn Sign Language or about whatever they class was learning that day. It was one of my favorite times of the year. I absolutely adored those students and watching them learn. I also wanted to say that that taco truck Abby picked out in that video you made inside of Target is one of my 2 1/2 year old son’s favorite toys!!! I smiled SOOO big when I realized that Abby picked that out at Target in the video!! My son, Billy, has decided that it’s NOT a taco truck, it’s an ice cream truck that visits all the little boys and girls in the neighborhood lol. He has these little Sesame Street figures that I also got him at target that he’ll set up at the table and inside the truck to serve the ice cream to their customers! 🙂 I’m sure y’all have heard it before, but you and your wife are SPECTACULAR parents and should be really proud of yourselves for the wonderful way you have raised Abby. She is not only growing up but she is also thriving. I applaud you both for always being involved in her daily life and making her happiness such a priority. Because unfortunately, my experience in those deaf education and special education classes allowed me to see that not all families do what you do for their children. ♥️

I do speech therapy too because I have some issues due having MS. I don't have much problems with pronouncing words, but I tend to choke (not too bad fortunately, but it needs to be taken seriously because it can be dangerous.) and I also have problems having access to words. Also speaking and doing other things at the same time can be an struggle some times. Speech therapy exercises can look like silly games some times but don't get fool they're pretty demanding. I'm always exhausted after the sessions.

If you really want a genuine peek into Abbie's sessions with her speech therapist, set up a hidden camera and let them work their magic without an audience 😊 Also I've been a quiet viewer for more than a year but since I'm here I wanted to say, it's so heartwarming and refreshing to see all the love and effort you give Abbie! One of the most important things we can do with any therapist is to learn what goes on in therapy and educate ourselves. We had to reschedule therapy this week and we had to do it at the house. I think people forget that she has this therapy every week in the clinic. The camera topic always baffles me. People act as if we have a production studio and staff in our house. Half of our content is filmed with nothing more than our phones. It certainly doesn’t distract from anything. Not to mention, we’ve been doing this for so long now that cameras just blend in with the room. I think we’ve done 4 videos on speech therapy in the last 8 years with the same therapist. Every once in awhile it’s good to share with our audience because most people have no idea what goes on in speech therapy.
