Okay but let's appreciate how we can see Green gradually learning the rules of this universe. •Woodland: Tries communicating "verbally", has to learn to use music to communicate. •Cave: Communicates with music, has to learn to match the style. •Village: Communicates with a matched style, has to learn to sing. •Desert: Green doesn't really learn anything here but I want to shout out how you can *_hear_* the growing desperation in the Wandering Trader's voice as he's rejected. •All culminating in the emotional climax at the mountain.

One interesting thing I noticed is that Purple specifically selected this universe, whereas everyone was panicking and rushing to Portals because the Black hole was destroying everything, Purple deliberately ran towards this Portal, now, this could mean that it was because there wasn't anyone in the way to it, or because this Universe is his safe space in some way, or just a place he likes going to, if you guys noticed, Green had to learn how to sing with the villagers, but there is no depiction of Purple learning it as he goes, meaning that perhaps he came here before more than a few times, him knowing a way to sing that is unique to him, the violin, could mean that he even got to the point of honing his skills here, whereas Green was just doing what the other entities did, using the note block and the lever, and finally acquiring a singing voice by hanging out with the villagers I find this interesting because when Green arrives, there is a childishness to this universe, something you'd see in a kids' tv show, maybe a toddler watching it is a vision you could have, to me this shows how Purple is a kid or a teenager, whereas King, who is bigger than the other stick figures, is an adult, the only adult we see in this series actually. Idk, just something I took notice of, maybe I'm wrong about it but I thought it was interesting
@mtnkid914010 ай бұрын
I honestly just jumped to this one after the note block battle one and I got the impression of it just being light and happy like a kid show at first too. And then some like boy band stuff with the zombies and funny 90's musical number, but holy crap I did NOT expect this to get so deep. I need to watch the rest of the series now lol.

I really like the detail that when Purple says he is bad, Green "tells" him that he doesn't have to be good or bad, he just has to be himself, and being yourself means making mistakes, but making mistakes doesn't make us bad. That's what Purple needed, to know that making mistakes didn't make him a bad person, a terrible bad person with no chance of being forgiven, and that no one would abandon him when he made a mistake. And in the same way, you shouldn't expect yourself to be "good," because, in the end, no one is ever completely "good." Plus, Purple was probably just a kid or preteen when his mom died and his dad abandoned him. He was very young and had to deal alone with very complex feelings and emotions that he had never encountered before. The fact of not having experience managing his feelings and emotions, in addition to being very young, was one of the reasons why he made bad decisions. He didn't know how to handle himself in that situation, because it seemed like he had no one to help him. (Bad english i'm sorry)

purple's redemption is unironically one of the best i have ever seen in all of fiction and it's one of the reasons they're my favourite character. having the usual "my dad abused me as a kid" backstory but then it's revealed that he is still looking for his dad to prove he can be a warrior, him looking up to king and being betrayed, him gaining the courage to fight against him and realising he doesn't need to be good or evil, just himself.... perfection.
@LineOfThy Жыл бұрын
actually showing his motivation and not just being depressed is important here
@dat_fast_boi Жыл бұрын
I think showing Purple's explanation here rather than simply telling does wonders for their backstory reveal. Sure, words can have emotion behind them, but having their story told through animation and music allows for you to get what's going on over an extended period of time and shows you Purple's perspective more directly while still keeping that feeling of letting it out all at once. And after it's all out, everything we just saw is distilled into a few seconds. Purple stands in the remains of their mother's flower, his dad walks away, then they break down crying. Their theme, too, is perfect for showing Purple's determination in spite of it all, really giving that feeling that they HAVE to get their father back, or (when used in episode 30) that they HAVE to stop the King. I legitimately still don't know if or how they're going to top this and episode 30, even with how good AvA 6 has been so far.
@LineOfThy Жыл бұрын
Also not to mention showing purple is not 100% without responsibility. Tons of redemption arks tell you "Oh he had a troubled backstory" and then expects you to automatically forgive said character for that. In this case, it's shown that purple willingly disregarded his morals just for another attempt to please his abusive father, and it's not until he reaches his lowest that he realizes his own fault.

Alan Becker is a remarkable storyteller. Conveying a story not through words but through elements of a pre-existing particle that was used differently than intended. Truly one of the best examples of “Show Not Tell” and he already did this with the many other animations revolving around the same characters and artstyle he’d done before.

Everyone has the potential to be good or bad. At a young age, our parents or whoever is around us shapes the beginnings of that, but you are not truly good or bad until you take responsibility for yourself and your own actions. When you hit that point, you can be good or bad. You have the power to act justly, you have the power to act unjustly, and it is your responsibility. The people or circumstances that shaped you may have made you more likely to do one or the other, but that does not take away from your responsibility, nor does it take away from your own power to reshape yourself if you wish. Subjectively? Sure, everyone is good in the moment in their own head, but that doesn't make them objectively good nor can we judge people by their internal thoughts because we do not know them. You can't stand in front of God (or whatever judging entity you believe in. If you don't believe in any, then it's meaningless anyway) and say "I only killed those people because I was told to" or "It was too hard to do the right thing" and expect not to be held responsible for it. You are flawed, it is not your place to blame others for it, it is your place to fix it.

I love the little detail where Purple resolves to change for the better and gives himself a little halo, but Green brushes it off, because he shouldn't define himself by terms like good or evil. Instead, he is just human, and humans make mistakes. Green kind of learns this himself after seeing Purple's backstory. At first he asks Purple if he wants to be good or evil, but that's such a narrow way to view something as infinitely complex and nuanced as a person, which is why he later emphasises brushing off both the devil AND the angel, and encouraging Purple to see himself instead as a fellow human being. An equal. The very thing Purple most wanted, to be considered worthy. An equal.

What I noticed is that when Green as chasing Purple, he was only questioning them. He wasn’t shaming or booing Purple at all, just asking questions, wanting to know why Purple did the things they did, and the same questions that we, the audience, have. Green is usually shown to be the more calm type, and that helps in his friendships. It went to the point that Purple just decided to open up to him already. Green wasn’t expecting anything from Purple unlike how their father (Navy?) did, and plus Purple probably didn’t have much experience of just being a normal friend as well. So they decided to finally say it. They finally found someone who’d accept Purple for who they are. Wholesome ending :)

One thing that I love about this episode is that every character has a different “voice”. This is especially evident in the scene with the Villagers and the last scenes with just Green and Purple. The villagers are all Brass and Wind instruments, this probably influenced Green’s voice becoming a clarinet (and a flute in that one scene and that other time) instead of like a synth or an animal voice like previous mobs he visited (or it’s just way easier to have an actual instrument as the stickpeople’s voices instead of minecraft sounds since by themselfs, they are totally separate) And once we get to the scene where Purple begins to use his voice, we figure out his voice is a strings instrument (probably a violin). And when we see the scene where we see the root of Purple’s trauma, the only instruments used are Strings (as far as I can tell). And once we get the “chase” scene in the void, the primary instruments are strings with any other instruments only being in the background. I think this is a good representation that Purple was so focused on earning any sort of his parent’s validation that he ended up pushing any other voice that wasent his down, making them just background noise, focusing only on the big booming expectations of an absent parent. The only time we ever DO hear instruments play along with the strings is when all the sticks are running past Purple and when Green runs by and looks back at Purple (in a totally normal friend type way not at all anything else being hinted at maybe 👀) and a small flute melody plays before they run off. After the scene, Green’s voice becomes another main voice with Purple’s strings. And when the two fly off, a very emotional mix of both Strings and (Brass) Winds are used. Both voices are working together to make a song. Edit: Adding some things, spelling and rewording

Absolutely blown away by that sequence with Purple. I've been impressed time after time with Alan Becker's knack for visual storytelling, and this was a beautiful example of that. The detail I like most is how Purple is represented as literally using other people as stepping stones on his way to his goal, which seems to involve becoming stronger than his father. I take it that this means he served King so loyally because he was the most powerful person he had met, and he believed that King would make him stronger. I'm intensely curious to see what he will do now, and I wonder if King will even try to appeal to him or just try to take the block back by force.

I just realized how every side-story has kind of been teaching all the stickmen valuable lessons. For second coming, it was not repaying brute force with brute force, but treating violence with kindness, reaching the Warden in a place that'd been locked away for a long time, for red it was working in teams and not always going it alone, for yellow it was embracing his techy side and using command block magic once again, for blue I guess maybe it was not backing down from a leadership role and training the villagers to fight, and for green it was being forced to embrace his musical side and relearn his affinity for song.

this has to be the most emotion I’ve ever felt for a stick figure ever, and it’s insane, Alan is not only a great Animator, he’s great at writing compelling stories without needing dialogue. The fact you can understand everything that happens in every episode and every animation shows the sheer skill this man has when it comes to storytelling. Even if this episode is mostly MUSIC, he still finds a way to use this music to convey feelings, like discovery, desperation, hopefulness, success, the fall back down to zero, and then at last, the idea of a new horizon. Not only does he have Great Animation, Storytelling, and The ability to make you want more, he works with people who create great music to fit scenes, which he then perfectly fits in with his animation and storytelling prowess. This isn’t even the last episode, but The Ultimate Weapon, The Raid, and this Episode are THE greatest examples of his ability to craft a story with an expressionless, voiceless, Stick Figure. The fact these stick figures have greater emotional impact when anything happens to them compared to ANY recently media speaks volumes. In the end, all I can say is that I cannot wait to see the next episode, every character has had their own return, and now the end has come to finish this Oscar worthy piece of animation.

@@TheMastermind7259 This is just my interpretation but Purple is clearly a victim of a “broken home”. He had an abusive “father” and he learned how to fight so he could protect his mother from him. Despite this, he never hated his father and still sought out his “approval”. I have two theories as to his relation with Orange (the King): 1.) The King was his father, formerly at least. Due to his thirst for power, he sought out the Blocks of Power (yes, I’m gonna use that term to describe the Yin and Yang Minecraft Icons xd) and overtime he…changed color idk. 2.) After the death of his mother, he went out to search for his father and found the King instead. For a while, under his servitude, Purple saw the King as a sort of “master” that somehow “approved” of him, something he clearly lacked in his childhood. Again, these are theories and are just things I’ve come up after watching the video. They’re not canon xd

@@DriedJizzSock Or maybe the dark blue father isn't a stick figure at all, but a really cruel animator that's worse than Alan that takes their anger/frustration out on stick figures due to real life problems or something. Since we saw how stick figures are created, and maybe Purple sees his creator as a stick figure because of some sort of stockholm syndrome. Or the animator knew how to control an avatar-like stick figure. Then the animator probably gotten bored of Purple and Pink, and so they left their creations to rot somewhere. Purple percieving this 'boredom' as disappointment in him and maybe Pink eventually ended up getting deleted by the animator but Purple wasn't aware of it. And Purple is a extended reflection of the animator's low self-esteem and insecurities, insecure enough to abuse programs.

I think it's really interesting how it's reveled how Purple comes from a universe so intertwined with music, and how he has some remote musical talent in finding his voice here. It also dawned on me that if Purple has such a vested interest in music, or at least was around music much of his traumatized adult life, this server of singing mobs effectively became his safe space. With those ideas combined, it came to me as no wonder to me that Purple gravitated towards Green, a natural musical genius. No wonder he felt safe around the musician, music is his safe space, and has been his only comfort as (what I would assume to be) a young adult. It only makes sense that he was comfortable enough to share his life experience with the music man.

I'm beyond baffled. Alan has conveyed a storyline so perfectly, not using words but with vision and sound. Small little theory/headcanon: The only way we've seen stick figures created in this universe is through being drawn, we've never seen a figure actually be born. In that case, _what if Purple's entire backstory was actually part of an animation?_ Maybe someone had wanted to animate an entire series about Purple living this tragic life only to become a warrior and fight his dad one last time (think Tekken) except the animator never actually finished it, only being able to complete his tragic beginnings and nothing more. That's why he's constantly trying to get more powerful, he's both figuratively _and_ literally trying to gain the power that was 'owed' to him.

My interpretation of the Purple's backstory: Purple's father (Blue) was a fighter. So, he trained his child to be a strong fighter too but purple hated fighting. His mother (Pink) noticed this and asked Blue to stop but he insisted to train Purple no matter what. The two had been training for quite a while until Purple finally gave up and the mother stopped Blue once again (This probably had happened quite a lot than what was shown in the backstory). Blue had enough and finally decided to leave his own family behind and go somewhere else. Purple took care of his mother but she didn't live long and died of a sickness. He tried to reach out to his father but he knew the only way to get to him was by getting stronger so he tried to find some way to prove it to him. He made everyone that he met as stepping pedals to impress his father. He found out that, to be the strongest, he had to steal the ender dragon's egg (because that's the ending of the game. You kill the dragon, steal the egg and become the "strongest" in minecraft) but he failed. Once again he lost his father. Then, Orange reached out to him. Purple saw him as a father figure. Strong and admirable. From then onwards he knew about the ultimate weapon and tried to impress Orange just like how he tried to impress his own father without knowing he was only repeating the same trauma. He once again used The Second Coming and his friends as a means of achieving his goals to get validation from someone he admired and cared about just for him to get betrayed at the end.

You not only made sound like a wonderful song but you managed to essentially create a language that the viewer can understand. I have watched your talents grow over the years since the original Animator vs. Animation you amazing to see how far you've come in your talent.

I want to just mention how in today's day in age, the fact that Alan is able to tell a story without any actual vocals, but through both animations and in this case music which is extraordinary on various levels, he truly is in a tier of his own along side greats such as Beethoven when you look at what's he's been able to accomplish in stick figure animation alone.

Love the different genres in this, from the farmyard animals, to the jazzy zombies, to the La La Land-esque/musical theatre villager singing troupe, and the wandering trader is totally unique. And then the call-and-response with Purple comes in and conveys so much before the Inception-style theme reaches the climax, then a swelling movie theme closes it out. Well done. Songs that came to mind while listening to this: Villagers: Another Day of Sun - La La Land Purple with the King and Dad - Mind Heist The ending - Titans Spirit or King of Pride Rock

this is truly the most beautiful one so far, so im gonna talk about it in the beginning, we can see how green (the one who has a natural talent for music) struggle a bit to figure out exactly how to communicate in a way that can be understood, but quickly master it. this small arc culminates in them learning how to actually sing, instead of using a noteblock to communicate. theres the wandering trader bit, which i believe was just there to help ease the viewers into this world a little bit more. now here comes the big part. purple we can see green trying to communicate, but purple clearly doesnt want to try and adapt to this world. during this, green asks a lot of questions, which arent immediately answered, the main ones being “why did you betray us?” and “are you good or bad?”. purple eventually just lets out a scream of frustration, still refusing to communicate. eventually, though, they give in, and start to explain. their parents seemingly didnt get along, with dark blue (whos name i will shorten to dblue) constantly fighting them, and purple seemingly trying to protect pink. either that, or dblue was trying to train them, make them strong, and worthy of love. through purples motions while singing this part, we can see that they love pink, and that they meant a lot to them. as pink dies, the visuals that have been constant throughout the episode fade away, with the music enhancing the story instead of guiding it. purple is chasing after the love of dblue (or, perhaps, chasing them in order to enact revenge. its unclear), harming those that trusted them in the way. in comes king. they seemed to have promised purple a way to get what theyre after, if they do something in return. that “something” is something we are all to familiar with. they do as they were asked, desperate for some kind of validation, but they dont get it. king betrays them, just as they did to the others. the visuals return, with purple now finally answering the second question. theyre evil. green, however, consoles them, explaining that while they may not be good, their not entirely bad. they then give them the elytra, which is incredibly symbolic in multiple ways. purple had used that elytra in ways that had hurt green and the others on multiple occasions, but it also symbolizes the wings of the angel used to represent good. they put the wings on, and a halo appears over their head, but greens waves it away. theyre not wholly good, but they arent wholly bad. theyre simply… themself.

You put an insane amount of work & love into each episode, and each video is such a treat to watch for that reason. I just can't get over the fact that you can blow my mind every time with something new after all these years, so keep up the great work Becker. I love how each scene has its different genre which matches perfectly to each one!! *And also feeling like a fever dream honestly Animals 0:01 for kid friendly tunes like in kindergarten (*realizing it was perfect intorduction to the rest of the music that gets progressively intricate) Zombies 1:26 electric jazz(?) since their undead so very chill both literally and figuratively I guess. *Purple's way of moving forward is just like the zombies, loose and flimsy. Is it because thats how zombies move since their limbs dont work as well coordinated compared to the living like the animals and people? The Village 2:58 as actual musically performances, I love how they threw the note block since they know full well Green's a stick figure 'human' with a voice just that we nor Green knew till now! (*Love how the first villager we see goes in his house then goes back out just to perform the musical perfectly) Has no one noticed that at 4:35 the villagers surround Green in like a heart shape? Omg the Wandering Trader 5:13 for silly upbeat seller-mode with slight rugged 'voice' music was fun, sad to see it was interrupted tho.. (*I'm adding a lot of edits but that just shows how this episode is by far my most favorite and I wanted to add that out of all the musicals in the video, Wandering Trader has THE most closest to sounding like an actual voice instead of a note) The llama's as backup tunes are so cute and cool I adore the beginning of their part. 5:27 Wandering Trader just yeets out the leads just so he could negotiate without being pulled or pulling his llama companions 😂 small detail and not that amazing but I still find it cool! There are a couple videos that have put fan-lyrics on this video and I'd like to try my version too soon! *Edit Green trying to reach Purple from across each other was beautiful and sad, especially later on at the mountain top, Purple's distance and disruption to Green's melodic questioning (*which I realize is a soft tone so Green was just trying to understand Purple). Purple was exhausted, betrayed and overwhelmed. Suffered and was alone... until now!

7:57 The EMOTION in this whole song is just beautiful. I never in my life would have guessed i would feel so strongly about a stick figure "singing" about his past. You can just hear his feelings in every note. The necessity to please his father, to be better than everyone else, to fulfill his job for KO, and the feeling of shame and regret for hurting his newfound friends in the process. This series is truly breathtaking!

The first part is music for the ears, and the second part is music for the eyes and heart. Wow, this isn't just animation, this is really top-quality art. I think the hilarious first part actually makes it easier to feel the second part with its visual poetry. Alan hits a lot of emotions, so you end up really deeply enjoying each one. I also sense a freedom in Alan's movies that is absent in much media. A lot of media feels a bit tired, like the same person scripts it, and you can predict the whole story after after about 10 min. Not so here. I mean, we knew there would be music, and probably a reckoning with Purple, but the form Alan's team has given it is so unexpectedly funny, beautiful and creative. Thanks for giving me hope for art again!

I mean, you can still guess some stuff, like purple becoming a good guy is a pretty obvious turn for the story after the King shot him down, but it's like 90% stuff that you didn't expect, like i didn't think the King would actually get both Minecrafts, let alone merge them and put them on the staff cuz then it's like "Now what? I really, TRULY, hope not, at least not intentionally. If he intentionally wastes an opportunity to atone, especially since it was given by the one most critical of him, I don't see him ever truly being redeemable. Not to say EVERY antagonist needs redemption, or even deserves it, but Purple definitely comes across as lost and torn. He's done horrible things that need to be made up for, but he's not past the point of no return. Actively Pissing away this chance would just seal his fate.

What's really impressive to me is that Alan Becker is still improving his craft with each new video. A lot of content creators, once they have a series with an established audience, get "complacent" in terms of just rehashing the same old formula for each new work they put out. But each of Becker's videos feature some new unique element. This time I was especially impressed by that 3D violin sequence.

You and your team have come so far, I am excited to see more of this in the future.
