I want to go on the record saying that the tonal shift in Noozles from slice of life fluff to a serial, high stakes adventure with personal consequences was a formative narrative moment for me. I was under ten when I was consuming this show and seeing the last couple episodes were a delirious experience for me that had a real impact.

the whole grandfather trapped in the bubble for eternity was terribly unsettling for all these years... and then you mention something about the lizard being an avatar of the grandpa, that makes me feel a sht ton better now. perhaps yes, the lizard IS the grandfather existing outside of the bubble, because when a family approaches the bubble, he wakes up as his former self (without a body anyway), but perhaps when he goes back to sleep, he wakes up as the lizard.

I've barely thought about it since then, but when I did have the odd thought about Noozles, I'd always think, "isn't that the cute show that got weird and deep?" Love your work. Always impressed by your research and thoughtfulness. Just want to offer this interpretive tidbit. The change from mundane scenarios to apocalyptic ones isn’t a switch from coming of age to something else like heroism, but rather an intensification of the coming of age theme. The conflict with koalawala land is a metaphor for the onset of adolescence, especially the threat it can appear to pose. I had this thought a few years back when preparing to become a parent and reflecting on my own childhood, which like yours involved a lot of noozles. Hope you find this interesting. Keep up the great work!

It's funny: I distinctly remember that there was a koala cartoon I really enjoyed as a small child, but after watching the Nick Knacks episodes on Noozles and Adventures of the Little Koala, I still have no idea which of the two it was. Maybe it was both of them -- apparently I was only four when they stopped airing on Nick, so it's entirely possible that I assumed they were the same show. Anyway, I'm glad to know that it/they did exist and to find out more about them.

Forget the early 2000s webcomics, I wouldn't be shocked if the sudden plot move here inspired a lot of modern American animators. There have been a lot of cartoons lately since the 2010s (especially since Adventure Time, though they're hardly the first, of course) to pivot from wacky adventures/slice of life cartoon into a real "shit got real" plot later.

For many years it was impossible to find Noozles in this level of video quality. In the 80s Japanese studios would broadcast their anime but would rarely release it on home video, and licenses to American/Overseas broadcasters didn't usually include home video release rights either. A lot of anime from the World Masterpiece Theater series had this same issue. You couldn't really watch it because the video just didn't realistically exist. You'd see bits of some episodes crop up from people who'd recorded it off broadcast to VHS and then digitally transferred it themselves, but this was often really low quality, and it was still impossibly hard to find until at least 2010 for most of these series. I remember hunting down vids for WMT's "Little Women" anime (Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari) which I remember having a couple episodes of on VHS as a child in the late 1980s (but had never seen the whole series) and eventually finding a pirate distributor that had been compiling them from the TBS (Christian broadcaster) streaming service called Smile of a Child since 2009, and then later in 2015 stitching the English audio into video rips from the Japanese DVD boxset which got released in 2012. So you could flip between the English audio (from Smile of a Child) or the Japanese audio from the DVD...which was an awesome feature. You gotta love fan projects. Amazon has been putting out a lot of these old series lately, so it's finally been possible to enjoy Noozles and a lot of these other series in the highest available video quality.

@ChronoArcaile2019 According to Behind the voice actors, Blinky’s English voice is said to be Barbara Goodson (Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers, Goku in the Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball). However, there is nothing to prove that Barbara Goodson voiced Blinky, and she couldn’t have done that back then. Blinky is definitely the voice of Brianne Sidall in English because Blinky sounds more like her. Behind the Voice Actors needs to correct their mistakes.
@thesladesterb3vt3co7h
@thesladesterb3vt3co7h 2 жыл бұрын
@ChronoArcaile2019 Yeah. Also, the thing is, the Nickelodeon-Saban dub, even though it was edited & some things were altered, was one of the dubs Saban Entertainment did that was closer to the original Japanese version. How do I know this? Well, I requested my older sister to translate the original Japanese first episode of Noozles, and fan sub it. She looked at the English dub and discovered that it was much closer to the original version so she told me she can’t do that (she’s an expert at that stuff, she would tell you). Unfortunately, the English dub episodes of Noozles got taken down by KZbin but you could still view them on the Archive website, although the episodes and the titles are all out of order for some reason. But yeah, I don’t know why Behind the Voice actors came to that conclusion or even made the assumption that Barbara Goodson ever voiced Blinky. Brianne Siddall was the only voice of Blinky in the English dub, and all they had to do was look at the credits. Also, it’s worth noting that Cheryl Chase (Angelica’s VA) only voiced Pinky in the first eight episodes. I don’t know what happened, but for some reason, another voice actress by the name of Lara Cody took over the role from Cheryl Chase in later episodes. The two voices are a bit different, and it shows. Another character, one of Sandy’s friends named Emily, has a similar sounding voice to Pinky in later episodes so that’s how I know Lara Cody voiced Pinky later on. Pinky had two voice actresses in the English dub.
@thesladesterb3vt3co7h
@thesladesterb3vt3co7h 2 жыл бұрын
@ChronoArcaile2019 Wait a minute...Blinky and Pinky DIED?! Holy crap. Does this mean I have to redo my Noozles fanfiction then? Because in my story of Noozles that I am currently writing, Blinky & Pinky actually come back to Sandy (and Blinky & Sandy, later in the lives, start a romantic relationship). I know it sounds gross, but Blinky is anthropomorphic, and I doubt anthro animal x human is bestiality. Also, call me nuts but I don't believe Sandy's grandfather is totally dead. He said himself that his body is gone but his spirit remains in a shadow (of course that was in the dub). And also, the High Dingy Doo said that Sandy's grandpa isn't among the living but they can't say he is dead either (And this was also in the dub). I might be basing it way too much on the english dub but I have only seen the first episode in Japanese, and not the whole series. Even if Grandpa Ben is dead, they could do a sequel and he comes back to life as an older, elderly man like his wife. I don't now. But yeah, it's surprising that Saban had kept all the references to death in Noozles (except for the end where Blinky and Pinky actually die).

I kept seeing the episodes out of order so I never got the whole story (but I did get a whole lot of confusion.) Oh my Lord, the second half of the show going a lot weirder was something I had nearly forgotten! I also watched the show a lot on Nick Jr as a little kid, but man, that brought a lot of memories flooding back. This came up in the Little Koala episode, but having further context concerning the origins of the "Japanese tourist" stereotype/cliche from that era is welcomed, as well, and seeing how integrated pushes to encourage travel were in even anime of the era is pretty fascinating.

I dont recall there being such a dramatic shift in tone "halfway thru" but I distinctly remember being impressed by the introdcution of serialized story elements, a rarity in kids shows then. I dont recall the details but I also remember the last episode being very bittersweet.

While I have lived in the US for most of my life I was born in Australia and lived there until I was 5. I loved watching The Noozles as it was something familiar to me as a young child that had moved to another country.

This series was a guilty pleasure of mine as a kid. I was about 9 or 10 when I first saw it, and around that time, I was quick to call out certain shows and movies as meant for much younger children (whether true or not). Still, I just kept on watching this show. The whole casual magic in a real world setting appealed to me, and I thought Pinky was really cool. I wished I could effortlessly fly and teleport around. I sometimes got annoyed, though, when she acted like a brat.

I'm a whole day late! I guess I didn't hit that bell. Well, this made my day! I'd watch Noozles again today if I had time. I loved this show. It's crazy to remember a show I watched when I was eight like it was yesterday, but I guess that's how iconic it was. Thanks for reminding me how weird that second half of what may have been my second anime (my first was Macross via R O B O T E C H !) R.I.P. Ishiguro-san, he helped make anime what it is today!

Hold on... Are you telling me that Saban- as in, “POWER RANGERS” Saban, helped make a conspiracy special?! Seriously, you think you know a company when they make multiple seasons of a fighting team franchise (which originated in Japan), and then you get hit with this! It’s really weird considering where they’d end up years later...

I remember the more slice of life episodes of the Noozles, but not a lot of the more serious apocalyptic parts of the show. But, what I do remember it was a cute little show. There was also talent both in the voice acting and behind the scenes that still work in anime today. Also, the whole Saban producing a JFK documentary kinda was a bit of a shock to me. Finally, not only will we all get sad about the ending of David the Gnome, but also from who produced the English version.

DNA evidence has shown that Pandas are actually bears after all. (Though that was debated for decades) (I am doing a rewatch of Nick Knacks and only just now noticed the line where you said Pandas and Koalas were both non-bears.)

I 100% remember that face-changing suitcase as well as the Nick Jr. promo. This is wild, I didn't know how much I was going to remember this show since I was so young when I saw it. I remember the slice-of-life stuff more vividly than the fantasy adventures later but it was absolutely a favorite series of mine at the time.

Oh man I remember Noozles it was so trippy. Wasn't there a recurring plot point in the second half where Sandy's dad or someone was stuck on a boat in a storm and it was about to crash, so she had Pinky freeze time right before it crashed but there was like some big argument about whether they were actually going to save him? I don't think I ever saw how that got resolved and I remember it bugging me years later, like "dammit whatever happened to that boat on that Koala show?"

Ooooh, this one sounds great. Both parts seem very well done, and it's great to have shows for younger audiences that tip into more fantastical and challenging ideas. I'm also glad to see this video seems to be doing pretty well!

I was hitting that age when shows like this were becoming a little lame, but I watched it because my younger brother (b.1987), was into Nick Jr. , so I watched this show quite a bit. Hated that pink bear so much. She was a total b*tch. The plots were a bit WTF, but I'm sure that is just something lost in translation from the Japanese show.
