One difference between counterboring with endmill and proper counterbore is you get a flat bottom with a counterbore. An endmill has a small relief angle towards center so it leaves a "convex" kone, most of the time this fine, for example if it's just for a bolt head. But in some applications you might need a flat bottom.

When you paused on the lathe (explaining cutting fluid) there's bronze looking strips under the tool, my question is, is that normal or would it being presumably a soft material make an otherwise precision tool a bit less precise?
@nauroticdax2 жыл бұрын
They are shims used to adjust the tool height so you are cutting on centre (typically there is a bit more to it than that but that's getting into rake angle and different materials) generally speaking brass is fine for tool shims because it's all under compression when you tighten the tool down, the tooling itself and the lathe not being bolted to something sturdy and leveled are way bigger concerns than using brass for shims.
