I personally believe this movie didn’t do well because everybody was thinking too deep about it. We were expecting it to be get out and Us so much that we disappointed ourselves. It was meant to just be a simple sci-fi movie about a believable place, where alien activity could go on.

@@donnyouttheway4091that’s a really reductive take though. It has a ton on its mind and rewards multiple viewings in the same way Get Out and Us do. Its themes just aren’t as explicit or easily summarized.

I find the themes quite explicit and easily summarized, but I don't think that's a bad thing: if you're trying to impart a message, what's wrong with being clear and accessible? I love this flick and can watch it any time because I know I'll spot another new-to-me choice that shows how meticulous and deliberate the film is.

I have to say, I am seriously impressed. I LOVE this movie, and have watched so many reactions of it, and you two caught on to so many more of the more subtle aspects of the film then anyone else i've seen. Alot of people especially get confused about how the gordy story fits in, and Matt was spot on. he thought he was special, that he had a connection, a gift, because he survived. he didn't think of the fact that, because of the table cloth, gordy couldn't see his eyes. he took away the wrong impression. and in the end, he wanted to make a spectacle out of Jean Jacket. and YES! a number of people have said across numerous videos that Gordy was in fact signing. specifically he was supposed to be saying "What happened family". the attack is based on the real and tragic story of Travis the chimp. one thing about chimps is that as they get older, it becomes harder for them to control their instincts. nearly all of the recorded attacks by so called "domesticated" chimps have been older. and one sad aspect is that when they snap and go into a rage, its been documented that they have no memory of what happened. it wasn't confirmed, but its believed that they had gordy signing that to say he couldn't remember what happened. Matt, you are the first person i've seen catch that. I literally yelled out "YES!" and clapped when he asked about signing. some tidbits: the design of Jean Jacket's final form had a number of inspirations. jellyfish was a big one, yes, (and a cowboy hat for the base form) but also, the Angels from anime Neon Genesis Evangelion which in turn take their inspiration from biblically accurate angels, many of which are depicted covered in eyes (ie they can see you watching from any direction). another was weather balloons, many have that silvery look to them, and are also a regular go to for skeptics to hand wave away UFO sightings. Finally, there is a type of theoretical spacecraft called a Solar Sailing Ship, which uses massive, but super light sails to travel thru space on solar winds. in fact, you all had mentioned you wanted to start watching Star Trek Deep Space 9 (I still think that would make an awesome reaction series :) ), if you do get around to it, about a third of the way thru there is an episode that features such a craft called a Bajoran Light Ship, which incidentally has a design very reminiscent of Jean Jacket. I didn't even catch the bit with the microphone. thats an awesome detail i somehow missed all this time. lol Another detail i didn't hear mentioned, the alien heads the kids wore and were on the merchandise Jupe sold, looked exactly like the tops of the tv cameras on the Gordy set. on a personal note, as someone that works retail, and esp in tech services, that scene with angel in the store when he's ringing them up and trying to sell them on an install was the most accurate depiction of retail life i've seen. lol
@machfront

Mostly true but nearly all immaterial as the alien is simply a movie or TV screen and the entire film is a symbolic comment on “not looking” at the garbage. The symbolism is strong and heavy-handed. Could have been brilliant, but went too far by being symbolic during near the whole entirely of its runtime. Ought have been FAR more subtle . It’s a shame as I’m sure Peel could have done so. Instead it’s like: “LOOK! SYMBOLISM! The WHOLE movie! ENTIRELY! ALL THE TIME!” Like…sheesh!

Some people hated this movie I don’t get why?! I understand being confused by the connection of the Monkey scenes but after learning what the director meant I think it’s pretty brilliant. I absolutely adore the acting and casting. I love how real and grounded the acting is. BUT WHAT I LOVE MOST IS HOW IT TRANSFORMS FROM MYSTERY, TO HORROR TO SCI FI TO COMEDY TO MONSTER MOVIE TO WESTERN AND ULTIMATELY AN ACTION ADVENTURE FLICK. And as the movie transforms so does the creature.

Yes. The film is about media consumption. The “alien” is the movie or TV screen, etc. The whole film, during its entirety, is nigh wholly symbolic of such. It can be seen as a strength. Despite how well made it is, I think it’s a sad flaw of the film.

It's horrific, watching them go up and realizing that that's *not* the sound the monster makes. The sound of the monster is completely different. It's like a mixture of deep horns...yet, most of the time? The monster itself is _silent._ All the other times, we're hearing the shrieking of trapped people being slowly digested for HOURS. 😰😣 First movie I can think of where the victims largely are the ones announcing the monster's approach/nearness.

Given Matt's love of Corridor Crew, they did a stunt deep dive on "Once Upon a Time In Hollywood". On the scene with the dog, the CC people learned the production team went really slow in training the dog for that scene. The pitt bull Brad Pitt's character has for most of the movie is his personal dog Sayuri, but he made sure his dog was never anywhere close to the violent scenes. The dog trained for the fight scene had to think the whole time he was just playing. The stunt player in the scene said if the dog did anything unexpected, the handler called stop and everyone on set froze to not further overstimulate the dog until he was taken off set to calm down from a over-excited state. The stunt woman also said that even with the dog just playing and lots of padding on her arm, she still went home with lots of bruises. These creatures deserve our respect.

I got to see this movie in theaters and it was such a fun crowd experience. Seeing the digestion scene on a huge silver screen was terrifying, as was the Gordy flashback. I think I sat thinking about this movie for like a week afterwards. I loved your reaction and thoughts so much because they reminded me of mine first walking out the theater. The theme of animal handling being a straight through line from Gordy to Jupiter to Jean Jacket. Of how we, like you said, can't apply human logic to a wild animal, and must treat them with respect and caution. But also the whole paparazzi angle - everyone in the movie is obsessed with making it big by getting 'the perfect shot'. The TMZ guy representing the rude and brazen, not caring for anyone to get the shot they want. Antlers Hoist, the guy with the non-electric camera, being the one who did get impossible shots - and now he's lonely at the top of his mountain, where everyone puts him on a pedestal. There's a ton of great analysis done by people more articulate and clever than I, and it's so much fun to read them. Peele's movies are just on a whole 'nother level, they're so damn good.

Things that are amazing about this film that it took a second watch to get(or watching it with full context makes it cooler): The radio thats on before the key drops onto Haywood Sr. states there were some hikers missing for two days. That means that Jean Jacket(who I'll refer to as JJ in this)had still been digesting them. The shot in the opening credits is the reflection in JJ's eye the whole time and the wind whipping past. I love that it transitions into the shot of the running horse as well(just a personal enjoyment). 6:26 Otis's father was probably the one who used to do the speeches, so Emerald did need to add another "great". Jupe is clearly still traumatized by his experience on the set of "Gordy's Home"and he treats it as a joke to try to cover for it. However, his whole office and work is in reference to his past experience(his wifes office is like the display cases in his private room, the masks for the alien "viewers"that his kids dress as are like the reels for the film on the set(19:46) with the bodies being similar to Gordy's fur)and he kept the shoe that he saw as something impossible in the moment(I'll go into that in a moment). Gordies rampage might have been because the studio audience were also making eye contact with him, with the balloon popping being what set him off fin OJ doesn't get attacked by JJ early on because he's always wearing his hat, meaning that he never directly makes eye contact with it. Jupe hypes himself up by telling himself he's "chosen". However, Jupe made a mistake because of his past. He believed he and Gordie had a connection because Gordie didn't kill him. However, a few factors were why he didn't get killed. One, he was distracted by the shoe and didn't make direct eye contact. Two, he was crouched down and in a submissive posture. Three, his eyes, when Gordie came in close, were covered by the tablecloth. However, he made a mistake and he believed he did the same thing again when JJ entered his life, believing he was spared because he had connected with the "viewers." However, as OJ said at one point, the event was a bad miracle. Lucky really WAS lucky. JJ came early to the Star Lasso experience, I think, because the horse statue lodged in his throat made him angry and he tried to dislodge it by eating a lot. Clearly, Jupe hadn't expected JJ to be there at that time. However, when trying to eat to get rid of the obstruction didn't work, he contracted his body like a squid or a jellyfish and spat out everything(hearing the screams is horrifying enough, but the person yelling "It burns!"just before JJ contracts is terrifying. Both JJ and Gordie die because of a popped balloon. Just as a fun bit: There was both a Universal presentation with Jupiters Claim and a wesbite for it(that transitioned from daytime to night, with the music becoming creepy and the images on the sight referencing JJ.) Ironically, I wasn't that psyched for this one, compared to "Us"and "Get Out"when I saw the trailer. The revelation of JJ being an animal instead of a ship turned that on its head when I finally watched the movie and made it my favourite of Jordan Peele's trilogy.

One of the scarriest parts of the abduction scene for me is that above the last woman it shows in his throat is the fake horse. That fake horse is stuck and preventing the people from being fully digested. They get abducted in the morning and its night time in the next scene. So for hours they are slowly being digested and finally it realizes it cant eat them and just crushes them all.

Yeah, avert your gaze, being carried bodily into heaven... And it's amazing how many theories and ideas might work. Maybe it's an unidentified terrestrial being. Maybe it's some weird alien species that's drifted across space. Maybe it's something left behind from some alien visit (woops). Maybe it's an alien probe that went wrong. And all that builds on people misunderstanding the world around them.

After the film was wrapped up Universal carefully deconstructed the Jupiter’s Claim set, and located it at the Universal Studios backlot as part of the studio tour that opened at the same time as the film release.

The connection was the spectacle and Joop thinking if he can pacify the animal he'll be spared and can still make money. Jean Jacket is based off of Jelly fish, if you watch the behind the scenes. And the scariest part..they really don't know if a thing like Jean Jacket exists. There are some things that live in other levels of our atmosphere...a Jean Jacket is totally possible....and terrifying.

Once again, Matthew you and I think so much. Alike, there's a reason why I am somewhat afraid of Michael Myers as a character. Because exactly what you said he is real. He is somewhat legit. You can see someone like that. Today there are serial killers that are similar to him

I don’t know what was worse: having your eyelids and lips mauled off by a hyper violent monkey or being sucked up by Orgalorg-I mean Jean Jacket dying like the Sarlacc Pit from Star Wars in the sky. Either way, Jordan Peele pulled another homer. I recommend Us, if you haven’t seen it, yet. Furthermore, I’m impressed by Matt’s #(future title) Eagle eye for Easter Eggs.

I think of the characters as representations of neurodivergence. Emerald is ADHD. OJ is Autism/OCD. Antlers is Depression. Angel is Anxiety. Jupe is PTSD.

You guys should definitely react to Smile from 2022, its an absolutely unnerving film with some really good jump scares and just unsettling scenes mixed in incredibly well with the film and also Kal Penn is in it as well so maybe some nice incentive there. its a must watch if your into the creepy and hair raising types of film and even if your not its filmed really well and has some really good acting especially from the main actress.

I adore this movie! Apparently Angel was originally supposed to get killed in the excitement at the end but the actor playing him lobbied Jordan Peele to let his character live so he could be in any sequel that might happen. And Jordan has indicated that there are more stories to be told in the Nope-verse. I wouldn't mind that at all. You guys could do a lot worse than to watch "Arrival" from 1996 with Charlie Sheen. I know, I know, but Sheen's really good in it and the movie's a lot more inventive and fun than "Independence Day" which pretty much sucked all the oxygen out of the genre the year it was released. I'm not sure anyone has reacted to it, so you guys would have a clean field all to yourself in "Arrival" reactions for a bit. That's not a bad thing, right? (I have no idea how KZbin analytics works.).

I've never thought about the concept of using more CGI and less actual animals in movies now that we have good enough CGI to do so from that perspective. I don't know the industry will start making more of a switch very soon but I can see it happening. I do know they are starting to try to phase out real guns in movies since the Rust incident i.e. in the newest John Wick film they only used rubber guns and used CGI for the gunfire. As much as I hate PETA I wouldn't be against trending toward more realistic CGI animals.
