Yeah, same. I was bored as Hell and looking for movies to watch on the Internet back in ~2013 or so, found this movie and was genuinely surprised by how compelling it was. Okay, it's not going to top anyone's all-time favorite list but it's still more interesting of a concept than you would think going in.

YES! This one is such a great mind-bender, and it doesn't get nearly enough love, IMO. My thoughts are similar to yours. One thing, I don't think the taxi driver is the ferryman. I think he's death. When Sally recounts the legend of Sisyphus, she mentions that he didn't cheat death, exactly; he *_broke a promise_* to death. When the taxi driver lets Jess out at the harbor, he says, "You will come back, won't you?" And she replies, "Yes... *_I promise_* ." She didn't keep that promise, and now she's in the same boat as Sisyphus (almost literally).

That... seems a stretch to me. Punishment for breaking a promise would logicallly be over something important. Breaking a promise to a taxi driver (who does not present as Death), does not seem to me to be the issue.

SO GLAD you guys did this one! Triangle is one of my favorites. Your theory on the movie is very much like mine. Although I hadn't noticed that her 2-hour nap was such a reset point for her - thanks for pointing that out. All those dead sallies! What a bracing image. There's also a beautiful, subtle image worth pointing out: There's a visual trope of a circle on a slope - keeping with the Sisyphus theme. One of these appears after the boat is capsized. There is a cross-fade that puts the sun at the top of the upturned rudder that Jess is sitting next to. I also love the shot that has the camera go through the mirror during the "Anchors Aweigh" sequence. A friend, seeing the movie for the first time, said at that point, "The other side of the Möbius strip." Given that you so dug Triangle, I'd like to recommend Martin Scorsese's 1985 dark comedy, After Hours. Thanks for the great channel!

My thoughts too! Also, killing seagulls is traditionally bad luck as they are the souls of sailors lost at sea, so maybe that started the loop?

This film really creeps up on you.. Now you have seen it, you MUST watch it again. As you know what's going to happen, it makes everything ten times more sinister and creepy. This is the only film that I've found that does this

In the opening sequence when Jess gets the mysterious doorbell ring, her house number and her neighbor's name are a nod to The Shining. #AttentionToDetails Triangle is one of my all time favorite underrated hidden gems. Always nice to see others enjoying it! :)

I like this one as a companion piece for Coherence although I think Coherence holds together better/is still more interesting on rewatches. Personally aside from all the time loop stuff itself as a sort of thematic thing I think the movie also works as an exploration of being caught in cycles in life, maybe of addiction or abusive behavior. The feeling of "that wasn't me", the sick sense of things happening again that you were sure weren't going to happen again, pushing people away, even trying to destroy yourself and failing again and again.

fun fact- aeolus isn't the one that rolls the rock up the hill, it's his son sisyphus. i thought this was a mistake but then realised that it is symbolic. she can't change the past or anyone's suffering but won't relinquish hope, thereby forcing her child to die repeatedly. hence her boat is named after sisyphus' parent. one of my favorite horror movies and does a great job of showing the terror of eternity, permanent existence.

Melissa George is getting the reputation as a scream queen. remake of Amityville, 30 days of night, mulholland drive, a lonely place to die, dont go. she has also ppeared in the good wife, greys anatomy, and Alias.

I LOVE movies like this! My favorite genre. I thought I was the only one who felt the multiples of Sally’s scene was haunting. I saw this over a decade ago and every once in a while I randomly think about that one scene and the context behind it and I feel uneasy. The sally scene, The Endless Tent scene and the ending of skeleton key are cinema scenes I wish I could relive for the first time again.

Triangle is such an awesome film! It hasn't even started and I'm already excited. Also, "Mattneto" #title ... finished. Did you notice the AO on the marching band, the Alpha to the Omega, the beginning to the end. Also the lead actress is pretty famous, she was big in Home and Away, an Australian soap where A LOT of Hollywood actors start out!

Try and recollect the conversation about Aeolus, the name of the liner. Sisyphus, the son of Aeolus, breaks a promise he makes to death. As a result, he is punished by being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this action forever. Ring a bell?

So the taxi driver is Death. What's her face said Sisyphus was cursed because he broke a promise to Death. When the driver left her at the harbor, he said he would leave the meter running. And she promised to come back. Which of course she didn't.

Spoilers! There is a great explanation video by Peng Yang on youtube. He did all the research on forums back when this came out and boy there is a lot more to this movie than you think! I really like the explanation of the difference between the different Jess's onboard. How the 2nd Jess is aware of the situation and the others aren't (the ones that wake up from the dream). Definitely check it out if you want to dig deeper into this movie. The timeline is really neat. Fast forward to part II of his upload as part I is just an overview of the movie/plot.

Something I find kinda eerie is we don't see how all the loops work out.. like how did she get to become the masked killer that stabbed the two in the room or... the loops that had her unmasked and fighting herself? It just feels like there are things that even we don't see as a way to be like "she tried to break the loop in multiple ways and none worked" Also.. most people assume maybe the one we follow will be the "hero" and "break the loop" but nope.. Also also... how many Jess' are running around the ship? Like.. there are clear indications of some kinda time passage (ie multiple Sally's and lockets) so.. shouldn't the storeroom with a gun eventually run out? Shouldn't there no longer be overalls for her to wear at some point? Is there some loops of batshit insane Jess' that are restocking things? Why do none ever actually try to not kill the others?

Ooooh snap! You're totally right. She didn't keep her promise to the ferryman/death and that's why she has to do it over and over again - just like Sisyphos. I agree that she was probably dead all along. I also definitely think there are multiple loops happening at the same time and they intertwine here and there (like the food being rotten all of a sudden), but this purgatory makes Jess fail no matter what she does.

Timecrimes is another time loop film that came out around the same time. It's a Spanish film, and i hope that it's a consideration.

It is the introduction of Greek mythology as the story's primary thematic element. Specifically it is a retelling of the myth of Sisyphus, a man the gods had condemned to a hell of ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, at which time it would roll back to the bottom. The Gods had it in for Sisyphus who had been able to cheat death for a period through a deception. My "speculative" read on the story is that the process started when she killed her autistic son in a moment of frustration. Regretting her act she made a bargain with death (symbolized by the sea gulls that appear at various times in the film). She will give up her life in exchange for being allowed to go back to the moment of her son's murder and prevent it. But after preventing the murder she tries to renege on the agreement, driving away with her son. Death then subjects her to a punishment in the tradition of Sisyphus.

She is getting punished beacuse she kills her Son in the house. What she wipes is actually blood of her son. Then she dies in car accodent. And when Death (taxi driver) asks her to come along, she doesnt go....so is destined to being stuck in the Ship loop.

Too bad that you knew about the time loop / multiverses beforehand. I saw it not knowing and when the scene of all the dead same girls on the boat came, i was shocked and it blew my mind. Now with all the Marvel multiverse plots, it has been run into the ground to the point of boredom. Back in 2009, it was a big surprise.

If you notice, all of the people who were on the sail boat ended up on the "Ghost Ship" Except for one. *SPOLIER* Everyone on the sailboat died except for her, we see her get sucked out of the sailboat and that is the last we see of her, SHE SURVIVED, but everyone else died which is why they are stuck in a "Death Loop"

This is a remake of the Spanish movie Timecrimes of 2007. Both are great, the remake certainly is a little different and somewhat more complex.

It's really not a remake. Someone going through timeloops trying to fix a mistake is not a unique plot. And apart from that one element, the two movies are very different. For instance, in Timecrimes the main character has a time machine; no sign of a time machine in Triangle.
