The thing about Jup was that even though he was traumatized by the chimp experience, he came out of it thinking that he still had a special connection to the animal. It's possibly why he thought he could tame the "aliens" like he had a secret bond or pact with them. All the while not even understanding the very nature of what he was dealing with.

Exactly jupe grew up without even thinking he should understand why the monkey snap or learn how they behave. He took the easy route and believed what saved him was that he had a special connection. The way Jup’s character never understood the animals he was confronted with. Even the alien mascots he had were chimp-like. Loved the ideas of looking/fame and not looking/self fulfillment. Loved the parallels between OJ and the nameless jockey. All the proper set ups and pays off. The sound design. The old Spielberg feeling… idk. One of the points, though, is that no one is actually "connected with nature". Animals can turn on you. An animal you think is trained can (and, at some point, often will) snap. The chimp, the horses, dogs, the alien (from Jupe's perspective).

In regards to the SNL speech, I loved how as Steven Yuen’s character was describing it the scene was interjected with flashes of the gory incident that really happened. To me this not only showed how traumatic that experience was for him, but also seemed like another commentary on spectacle. How we sometimes trick or divorce ourselves from real tragedy in favor of anything remotely entertaining. It’s almost as if that level of cognitive dissonance exists within us as some form of societal coping mechanism. And here Jordon Peele is, casually breaking the whole concept down while feeding us his own worst nightmares lol. Yeah, disturbing doesn’t even begin to truly describe this movie. The naysayers need to wake up to the Ogre-like nature of this film lol.

Personally I think that was a msg too from the detector. It’s kind of like what happens to animals when we let them get to comfortable around humans. For example like bears. People are warned not to feed them because it encourages them to think people provide food. They then start staying around people and then one day they attack and the animal is put down. In the end that what happened to the “alien”. For all we know it’s been on earth the whole time and didn’t make itself known until Steven started feeding it. It then Lost its fear of people and then snapped (when I say snapped I mean just being a animal). At the end that was the only option.

I was not expecting to love this film as much as I did. The filmmaking technically is just amazing but the story and set pieces really stuck with me. I get how some might have grievances either themes or pacing, but it gave me enough horror (Gordy and the abduction scene were some of the best horror moments in modern cinema) to thrill me when it came to the last act. I don’t know what direction Peele will go after this movie, but I hope he keeps putting out unique spins on genre films, horror or not. Us didn’t work nearly as well as Get Out for me, but I appreciate the big leaps he takes in direction even if they do not pan out as well as they should.
@Leafpool22 жыл бұрын
Oh man im glad you mentioned the sound design don't see enough people shouting that out but it really made a lot of these scares. Gordy w/ less competent sound design + a less competent director who might like, show more of the rampage to be shocking. would really not be as horrific as it is. also something i havent seen anyone mention yet is that calling it the Oprah shot probably was a very purposeful namedrop/dig since I remember when i was a kid that there was a very public news story that came out about a woman who had a pet chimp that eventually went ballistic and mauled her friend. I remember the 911 call of screaming and chimp noises on the news. When the woman eventually recovered I remember her appearance with her "new face" on Oprah being a really big ticket event that was heavily advertised (or at least I know my mom watched it so maybe I specifically remember it more because it messed me up LMAO) and she was wearing a shroud and big hat very similar to the actress in the crowd. Which could definitely be another comment on people making a spectacle of things since Oprah was good at that.

@@josuepena269 Oh I’m right with you there! Every time I think about that moment I get different interpretations from it but my initial reaction that I always think about is the fear of trickery/deception from that moment and the people are stuck in a point of no return with the general idea of discovering something big enough to eat humans alive in modern times ties in well with the “Bad miracle”. It’s also a very surreal moment because inside of Jean Jacket looks like fabric or something artificial/ non-animal material with textures that’s dissimilar to the linings of flesh and organs we’re used to but how the design, lighting and sound elements work for the audience to understand what’s happening in the moment before climax of the blood house scene is shown.

If you were taught to READ a movie looking for metaphors, similes and foreshadow etc..., if you grew up watching 'jaws' and alfred hitcock, twilight zone, signs, the village and mind f(*&(8k type movies like that...you'll love it. if you were looking for typical cool make-up, car crashes, things blowing up, severed limbs and stuff like that then you won't appreciate it. Those Gordy scenes were meant to intimidate you and make you nervous and horrify you enough that you are in a vulnerable state of mind for the main story as well as set an example of what happens when you don't learn from your mistakes because you figure somehow you're entitled and privileged and are an exception from the rules only to find out the hard way not to use people or animals for your own selfish reasons because they may just turn on you. LOL Sorry to burst your bubble or balloon...pun intended. At the end of the day...any publicity is good publicity and the fact that folks are talking so much about it.....that's entertainment.

So many people I've seen talking about the Gordy scenes and how they could be cut from the movie and it would change nothing, I feel like they're missing the whole point. As you said there is the function those scenes serve to unease the audience and put them in a heightened or vulnerable state of mind, but it also ties back very well thematically and character wise with Jupiter and the whole "abduction" Star Lasso scene. I honestly loved that whole sequence because it managed to peel back so many layers to the narrative and the characters and the themes and still lead up to this horrific scene that was traumatic without resorting to pure gore or viscera. Not a shot in that sequence was wasted, each was so purposeful and gave you just the right amount of information to let the rest of your imagination run wild. Had they shown more of the inside of the monster or more deaths like that it would have become dull and taken away from the effectiveness of the original scene. I basically mean to say I AGREE! But I just enjoyed this movie so much I love jabbering on about it.

Fu**ing amazing movie. I went there with high expectations (mainly because of Get Out) and I wasn't disappointed. Peele is definitely a guy the world should have an eye on 😳❤️

Peele does it again! I loved that people were upset that the last trailer “spoiled” the reveal of the story, but DUDE, it was all misdirect. You thought it was a UFO/alien movie?? Bro, it’s a MONSTER MOVIE!! The alien-lookin lady was a victim of animal wrangling and we all thought it was some pod-people type stuff. GREAT MOVIE

I finally just saw this. I think it actually brought me back to films like Tremors in a way. Maybe a slightly bigger budget but that whole isolated in a valley with a creature and relatively simple goals. Overall I like it though I think there is some pacing issues early on.

One interesting commentary on the theme of spectacle is the fact that there was an SNL skit about Gordy at all. That's pretty sick when you think about it.

It reminds me of the whole "Dingos ate my baby!" debacle where people made fun of this lady for years and years and then it was revealed that, yes, dingos did actually eat her baby. None of the pieces of shit that made fun of her ever apologized for it.

When I was watching the movie and right after I thought it was an entertaining movie but I couldn't figure out what he was trying to say and thought maybe he just made a movie. And then I heard a review that said it was about the dangers of spectacle and about exploitation of people and animals and was like "Of course that's what it was about" and then all of the pieces feel in place and the things that seemed weird or out of place all made sense. I'm always so bad at reading themes and symbolism in movies and sometimes I just need one little nudge and it all falls into place. It was the same way when I watched "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" and had no idea what it was other than weird until someone said it was in the Janitor's head and it was so obvious after that.

This movie had messages that were really meaningful for me. Get Out was an amazing commentary, US was not as clear but still had some interesting ideas. NOPE had some really strong messages about family and loss
@majorwakanda88582 жыл бұрын
I really thought the theme of "Us" was crystal clear. It's about the haves and have nots. This is summed up when the tethered version of Lupita Nyong'o responds with "We're Americans" when asked who they are. The implication is that people with privilege are born lucky and could just as easily be born without privilege. How we are the literally same (literally) underneath it all. That's why they're doppelgangers.

Yeah, the doppelganger grew up to be 'normal' so the only difference is spawn point.

Just saw the film! No words other then... AMAZING! If Jordan Peele keeps making his own movies like this, he'll be untouchable! Heck! He's already untouchable. Never have I seen more of an original take on the Sci-Fi and horror genre; from the ingenious creature design, to the terrifying bombastic SOUND FX (Really it warrants to see this film in an IMAX theatre, the sound is both terrifying and spectacular). I love this movie for how surreally personal it feels. I know that sounds weird. I don't even really know how to put it. It goes between a funny comedy between characters to a genuine horror movie... Not even really a horror MOVIE. It doesn't feel detached from the characters in the story. It just makes you feel so... There. It genuinely made me feel like I was inside the movie. It doesn't just focus on any single theme. I mean yes, it is infact a movie about Aliens, but that's definitely not it. The movie starts off with some interesting bits of Jupe's childhood trauma, but it's not explaining that to you. It's just there. And so was Jupe's entire childhood story in general. It's just there. Of course I would say usually that's considered negative writing, but it just honestly adds more to the mystery of it. There are so many bits added that have no blatant purpose in being there, but seem to be some part of a huge conspiracy or bigger story. It honestly reminds me alot of The Shining. All movies should be like this. Not just a silly story with characters, not just a beginning, middle, and end. It should feel like a rabbit hole to jump into. I never thought I would leave a theater feeling like I've just watched a horror movie for the very first time.

The design for the fake alien costumes made by Jup, and sold at the ufo event was inspired by the film canisters on top of the tv cameras (side view of the camera) at the Gordy studio. They look like dark eyes white face and black bodies

The entire Gordy sequence and story is completely POINTLESS lol.... we didn't need to know anything about that backstory and it had no bearing on the story whatsoever 😂.... if you remove Gordy and the backstory it changes absolutely nothing

@@reptilian_geneticist don't get so lost in plot that you miss the entire point of the movie. The Gordy storyline IS the entire point of the movie. Not every aspect of a movie has to tell the central story, it just all has to tell the central theme

@@StewartFletcher yeah its not all that deep 🤡.... its about the performance animals, yeah i get it, and they executed that storyline terribly and it was essentially completely POINTLESS and BORING... nobody gives a fuck about that underlying storyline about entertainment animals misbehaving... it ruined the entire pacing of the movie amd was absolutely pointless.... remove it from the movie and it actually enhances the movie... that was a stupid decision to have the Gordy storyline in the movies... felt like two completely different movies

One of my favorite small details in the movie is that Daniel Kaluuya's OJ looks down when he walks symbolizing the reverence and respect he gives to animals but also signifying he is the one to survive because he is the one who isn't looking up at the monster.
