Here's the thing: take syrup out of the argument completely! You can still have a waffle and it will still be delicious. A pancake just tastes like nothing (maybe flour) with a spongey texture. It's like tofu. It needs something else to take on the flavor of.

This is preposterous. A waffle bereft of syrup has a consistency that of drywall. It dries out the mouth and has little flavor. A correctly done pancake is NOT dry whatsoever and has a great moist feel to it; along with an enjoyable flavor from the pancake mix. A waffle is built to be a syrup receptacle, while a pancake can stand alone.

@@MrOasis316 that’s not accurate. The batter is different for pancake vs crepe. Pancakes have baking power and sugar and, after having made the batter, are immediately spooned onto a hot griddle. Crepes batter has neither baking powder nor sugar, and the batter ideally rests for at least one hour, allowing the bubbles to subside and lending itself to a be as flat as possible.

I also am team pancakes here, but at the same time, I have to admit that pancakes are only good the INSTANT they come from the stove. I love pancakes, but I have to make them myself or else they're garbage, and anytime I'm making pancakes I'm making it for the whole household and people eat as they come off the stove one by one, no waiting so that everyone can eat together, it'll ruin the experience fully. I think that one commenter had it spot on - the best pancakes are better than the best waffles, but it's easier to mess up pancakes.

Dear Taste buddies, This episode was so intense and delightful, I was compelled to offer a european perspective. I am Belgian of nationality, was born in Paris (France ;)), lived in Germany for 4years and now live almost 3 decades in the Netherlands. Each of these countries consumes both of the discussed food items. XD Let me preface that these two titans of a meal are perfectly matched to battle. To Sal's point the pancake aka crêpe/pfannenkoech/pannenkoek (French/German/Dutch respectively). They can be seen as different foods, but... yet again they are national spins of the same concept. Thus proving Joe correct! The european versions can be eaten with savoury condiments such as cheese, ham, bacon and even egg. (These are more traditionally found in Dutch cuisine). The "pannenkoek" can thus be eaten as a breakfast item and even dinner. Though I have enjoyed this on occasion my rather francophile upbringing finds the eating of pancakes for dinner quite barbaric. The Germans and french definately agreed on one thing and that was, that the crêpe/pfannenkoech is a dessert item mostly topped with fruit, whipped cream and or ice cream. And can be drisslled with a variety of syrups. The Belgian waffle mind you, is not the same in the US. It is a BASTARDISED version of the original Liège waffle... commonly known as a Belgian waffle (Liège= town in Belgium famous for its unique waffle recepe). The common waffle originally known as the "Gaufre" should have been the argument Sal should have used. Thus nullifying the majority of Joe's arguments. Bringing it back to which of the two items is better and why. In my personal opinion it is a neck and neck race. A good pancake is easier to find ( at a diner/restautant) than a good waffle making it hard to support the waffle. Yet the newer waffle is superior even if only slightly. The reason being the broad variety in textures on can get when biting in to a well made, fresh pressed waffle. The pancake is often dependent on where you came from and how they make them there. Having experienced good waffles is all the countries i have lived in and also the rivaling variations of pancake. The common waffle wins. When made correctly it is unbeatable. What an invigorating episode. Please revisit this battle and have some one argue the dark horse.. French toast as that too has european recipes. ✌🏾✌🏾

He said he could eat a whole box of eggos(10-12 per box)?, and if you ate a whole box of pancakes(typically 10-12) you'd feel like hot death after that many pancakes. I am a lifelong fatty. 6'3",270ish pounds, and would want to curl up and die after only four pancakes, let alone a whole box.

@@Shelby502420 if you eat the same amount, by weight, of something with the exact same ingredients you will feel exactly the same. Your problem here is underestimating the weight of the potentially more dense cake

@@ohboy6672 You make a logical, but misguided argument. It isn't about weight, and no they do not have the same ingredients. One has a leavening agent which leads to their more fluffy and light consistency. Moreover, nobody who has eaten both would ever claim that waffles sit as heavy on the stomach as a serving of pancakes. Pancakes are by nature more dense and substantial a substance. Therefore more filling. Which can be seen as a positive in their favor. You need less to feel equally as full.

I’m going to respect your superior fatness on this one but I’ll leave you with this: Have a look at the Japanese soufflé pancake, it’s so very light and fluffy due to the whipped egg white content. High protein.
