I've always wondered: What is the difference between Tagalog and Filipino?
@brendandoherty21594 ай бұрын
Me too
@BeeboLeo4 ай бұрын
@@earthwormandruw Tagalog is the local ethnic language majorly used in the northern parts of The Philippines (Luzon) (tho other dialects co-exists in Luzon such as Kapampangan and Ilocano dialects haha) which has the capital city of Manila. Filipino is the standardized language based on several languages and majority from Tagalog with minor from Spanish and also to generalize the people hence the term "Filipino citizen".
@alcor46704 ай бұрын
@@earthwormandruw Tagalog came from the term _taga-ilog,_ 'taga' = "from the", 'ilog' = river. This was the dialect of the people living around and near the Pasig River, the one flowing through Manila. This was also the main language of most of the people living in Southern Luzon. Most parts of the Philippines that rebelled against Spain -- and eventually declared its independence from it -- spoke the dialect. These revolutionaries formed the first independent Philippine government -- the Malolos Republic -- and all of the documents were written in Tagalog (and Spanish iirc). Tagalog being chosen as the national language (now known as Filipino) was an Executive Order by Manuel Quezon, the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth (the Philippine government during its annexation by the US).

Filipino here, some insights I'd like to add: - The hanging coffins are a traditional burial practice of the Kankanaey people in the Cordilleras. - The wet and dry seasons vary across different climate zones, but we generally don't get typhoons from February to May (during which it gets obscenely hot) - Sapin sapin and puto belong to a wider class of desserts called kakanin, which are all made from rice but can vary greatly in taste and texture. - A lot of names and words mentioned in the video were misspelled and/or mispronounced, so take them with a grain of salt. - I would recommend listening to the Eraserheads if you haven't already, they're a legendary 90s rock band who are still popular today. More contemporary bands I'd recommend are Lola Amour and Ben&Ben.

I've been living here in The Philippines for more than 13 years. Watching that video made me realize that it's almost impossible to portray any country in such a short time. One of my best friends back home in New York is Puerto Rican. I took some photos in a cemetery here, and sent them to her. She cracked up; Gomez, Garcia, Santos, Torres, etc. on the tombstones. Our congressman and former mayor is Richard Gomez, and his wife, Lucy Torres is our mayor and former congresswoman. While many of the words in Tagalog, Cebuano and the other languages spoken here are of Spanish origin (sometimes spelled a little differently), most Philippino people don't realize that. Having grown up with those words, they assume they're Philippine. Very few people here speak Spanish, but almost everyone who has at least a grammar school education can speak English. On the face of it, it seems strange because Spain occupied The Philippines much longer than the U.S. The difference is that the Spanish discouraged education for the native population, while the Americans encouraged it. As always, love ya.

My company has a division in the Philippines -- the recent typhoon you mention sounds like typhoon Gaemi. For that one, our folks were without power for 2 days, but otherwise treated it as no big deal. Another one just went through at the beginning of October, though it wasn't a direct hit on PH itself that time, skirting off to the north of Manila area. But yeah, overall they just seem to shrug it off -- "just how it is here" kind of thing.

Maybe someone can remind me the name of the bar in Manila. The Filipino band did country and western music, real good. a guy could sound just like Johnny Cash and the woman could do Patsy Cline perfectly. The waiters were dwarfs or midgets? not sure what is the correct term. One of the cooler bars I've been in, felt like an acid trip. I was just normal stoned not tripping.

sorry to tell you this but there are a ton of mistakes made on this episode of the philippines. one of the worst misinformation is the pan-philippine hi-way.. we dont have tunnels connecting the islands.. in order to cross the sea while riding a car from northern main island (Luzon) of the philippines to southern main island (mindanao) of the philippines, we use Ro-Ro boats where these boats will transport you while you are riding your car or motorbike... there are plans to build bridges to connect islands but to this day there was not and they uploaded this in september 2019.. there are a ton of mispelled names and mislabelled places and foods too... I believe this is the worst episode geography now channel have made... they have FFF episodes after each countries they feature and they always mention the mistakes they made.. it is alarming that most people say their channel is very educational but when you see their FFF (i think this means fan flag friday?) episodes you'll see how many times they make mistakes per countries... I really dont want anyone reacting to their videos. if you dont believe me, even our capital they call it "manila Metro" but supposed to be "metro manila". thats just small mistake but if you see these small mistakes like the lake beside our capital region, they said and mislabelled it as "Laguna dabai" instead of "Laguna de Bay"; a food like "sigsig" instead of "sisig"; an incorrect term for eating with your hands when they said "Kumakai kamay" and actually not only that it should be "Kamayan", i think they google translate eating with hands plus typographical error too... I think they meant to say "kumakain* ng naka-kamay". kain = eat, kumakain = eating, kamay= hands...
