The Philippines is known as the typhoon shield of Asia simply because it acts as a natural barrier for typhoons that would pass Asia (it's literally next to the Pacific Ocean). The US attempting to integrate its “colonial” possessions or release them immediately makes more sense than just kinda staring at them. This alternate “manifest destiny” of everywhere the star spangled banner touches must be brought liberty seems more in line with our idealism instead of just “world police.” If American started integration campaigns as soon as we got the Philippines, you’re looking at 50 years of relation building ended by a world war proving we’d fight for them just the same as any mainlander. The long term benefits I think would deeply outweigh the costs and profit both of our peoples immensely.

@boneman9751
@boneman9751 Күн бұрын
@@IkeaOrca569 this is exactly what I was thinking. Currently the US has a massive labor shortage and the key regions are manufacturing and agriculture, both things that you all seem to excel at from what I’ve researched. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe PH has 3.5 million some manufacturing employees, in the US, the largest amount is in California at 1.2 million. You all would have almost 3x as many workers and if you were given our efficiency practices, I have no doubt you’d be our manufacturing heart land. It would be foolish not to take the massive profits you’d provide us and invest them back into you. Not as a means to exploit you for cheap labor, but simply because you don’t seem to share the same allergy Americans have to hard labor. One thing I wouldn’t like to see is you all get the Puerto Rico treatment (massive population not properly resented) or worse, the immigrant treatment. As you said, you’re a patriotic and proud people, you shouldn’t have to give that up to join us. You deserve to be property represented in congress and keep your autonomy the same if not more so than actual US states. I don’t know if you’d enter as 1 state or multiple (you’d know more about dividing regional lines), but as far as an American from the southern region, I’d love to have you all. You’d be invaluable to us and losing you was a mistake. If you did join us, I can only hope we could provide for you all as much as you’d provide for us. I hope you’d enjoy our massive military and political power😭 Sorry for typing a book, but this is something I genuinely support, and hearing it come from a native makes me so happy and excited.

As a result, I sort of relate more now to my American heritage thanks to my grandparents having lived there than I do now. If my country ever became a state, I can imagine it would probably be such a strain on the US's finances purely because of how much infrastructure and shipments that the government would have to accomplish for the Philippines to be anywhere close to the standards of your typical American state. The islands require plenty of road networks, bridges, shipping lanes would need to be developed, that's not even covering the sheer amount of disaster relief plans that the country would need due to the constant natural disasters hammering it.

One of the reasons the Pearl Harbor attack was so effective was that the American Pacific Fleet was in one place, rather than spread out. If it was needed to guard the Philippines as well, the difficulty of attacking the fleet as a whole skyrockets. As such, I would think Japan would go a rather different plan. Either following the northern plan and forcing the Soviets into a two-front war, or attacking the colonial holdings but bypassing American territory. Without America joining the war until some other casus belli crops up, Japan would have an easier time of striking at French Indochina and British Malaya. Australia would face more of a threat, but an actual invasion would be unlikely. By the time they reached New Guinea, the Japanese forces were stretched quite thin. Still, they would secure supplies of oil and rubber from the newly conquered territory.

I doubt that Japan would even attack the pearl harbor in this time line though, their goal was mainly to get resources from the east indies, yet this time line the Philippines is too well defended that it could have been impossible for Japan to attack and take it, nor is it possible to ignore and by pass it, also, the Japanese strategy for war against the US was to push the Americans out of western Pacific then slowly retreat as the Americans push back and destroying American forces bit by bit on the way, yet this time line's Philippines is not able to be taken, thus probably the whole plan is scraped, it would have make it too hard for Japanese to even came up with a plan in this situation where America has a strong foot hold so near and the Japanese denied of east indies resources, it is too impossible even without hindsight, and also, the US and Japan was near a deal to recognize Manchuria in exchange for Japanese retreat from China and French Indochina, but didn't come through because of some infighting in Japanese diplomatic department and some "brilliant" guy came up with the idea to fight the US, but in this time line, I doubt it would had been as much appealing to attack pearl harbor, thus it is possible that the Japanese just excepted the agreement and the Pacific war wouldn't even happen

SEA would be completely different. china and communism would be much more contained as US now has two places to station their military(the other one being south korea) more importantly, if the US feels like it, they can install nukes! imagine in a timelines where china has a permanent cuba missile crisis this would also mean if US ever decides to do vietnam in this timeline, they can recruit filipinos, so they can just ignore the protesting mainlanders. another thing would be completely different is the communist movement in the country. currently, there's a guerilla rebel group known as the new people's army and they are a maoist militia. with the US controlling the country, they'd have no chance of ever finding meaningful recruitment as provinces where they're active will be swarming with US troops, and given enough time, will either fizzle out until their numbers die or surrender.

I think the most realistic path to statehood back then was to only admit a part of the Philippines as a US state, in particular the original Tagalog provinces who revolted against Spain. Only those born in this region would become US citizens. The rest would be divided into commonwealths where their people would only be US nationals but not citizens (like in Samoa). The lack of federal income tax would make the people of these commonwealths to want the status quo and not go for statehood. Only the Tagalogland would have been a state for several decades and that would have been somewhat acceptable to the the elites at DC. Just two Filipino senators and probably only 10 Filipino representatives. As to why the US would want Tagalogland to become a state, well, one reason could be is to finally put an end to the Tagalogs' aspiration of independence. Many of the Tagalog rebels would permanently abandon their armed struggle if they see that they are represented fairly in the US government.

Accepting the posits of this scenario, I can absolutely see the rest of the US territories getting fast-tracked to Statehood very quickly, with the Filipino Precedent being used as the reasoning. I could easily imagine Okinawa being thus incorporated, as well as the rest of the Pacific Associated Territories. Picture the 21st Century dawning on a world where the Pacific is an "American Lake", dotted with and surrounded by many of the 100 United States. America, with it's population of 500,000+ and VAST network of Continental and Overseas States, would not be the largest country BY LAND, but would DWARF every other country on earth by total controlled territory (when you include territorial waters).

The issue for Japan here is the chance of annexation is high. If America already has a state nearby to basically launch attacks from. It is easy to think we would just annex Japan and turn it into a state as well, but the thing holding that back would be their religion. The religion of the Philippines would be far easier to integrate them into the US. Although, the Atom bomb still likely is made and used sadly. It would be out of not wanting to spend more lives even if the US has more it isn't going to want to spend that much man power taking Japan. The Philippines at this point would be a staging ground for that attack. I think Manila would be as it is today just more Americanized. If it were broken up in three states going back to the beginning. I tend to assume the US might actually let Mindanao go as it being Islamic. I think it is due to Mindanao they keep the Philippines as one state or two states, but not sure how that would work.

It would've been best to keep the Philippines as a Commonwealth protectorate with its high autonomy, instead of a state. It's population is simply too large and too far away to fully integrate with the rest of America. I say this as a Filipino-American. As a commonwealth, the Philippines still had its own President, currency, military, and legislature; all while enjoying the protection of the U.S., free trade, free movement, and most importantly, the U.S. Constitution. The best of both worlds. Meanwhile, the U.S. gets a vast territorial outpost in the western Pacific and a huge population/economic base to develop without having to rely on countries like China. It'd be a win-win. In fact a return of the Philippines being an American commonwealth protectorate would solve A LOT of issues surrounding China. It would also solve a lot of the deep corruption faced in the Philippines itself.
