People say Tyson was a beast and that he won with his power but if you look carefully he's giving a masterclass in peek-a-boo style. He's very, very skilled, not just very powerful.

Yup! The peek-a-boo and his gazelle punch were a deadly combination. Also his conditioning, especially his muscle mass; he was short in comparison to most heavyweights, but that weight on him was nearly all muscle, ready to power through most guards.

He had both power and skill which is so dangerous. In his prime his defense was also ridiculously good. Still every new contender said they would beat him easily.

If you're not familiar Chuck Wepner fought Muhammad Ali in 1975! He lost the fight in the 15th round but it was a very "Rocky-like" scenario!! As a matter of fact Sylvester Stallone watched that fight and was inspired to finish his script for Rocky! Anyway Chuck Wepner had a couple of movies done about him! Which was a bit lighter than most guys he faced who averaged 230. His prime was 1985-1995. He was World Champion from 1986-1990. He was also the youngest Heavyweight champion Ever at 19 years old. The named "Sugar" is after Sugar Ray Robinson who's considered by most as the greatest pound for pound Boxer of all time. Its because his boxing was So sweet to watch. Hope this helps. The greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, and youngest champ ever at just 20. Perfect and totally unique technique, fast, aggressive. No one like him to this day. To be 220 lbs of muscle at 5'10 in itself is a feat, and dominating heavyweights who were 6'4 to 6'6, insane. Not to mention his endurance, he went ALL out and didn't slow down, having the same intensity from round 1 into round 10. I highly encourage you to react to a video on the history of Mike, or a video on Mike when he was a teen in the amateurs working his way up. His life was like a movie. Brutal childhood on the streets, adopted by his boxing coach, and went on to become undefeated undisputed heavyweight champ of the world at just 20. The videos of him training back in the 80s, phenomenal stuff.

Of course he was not the best heavyweight of all time. That's stupid. His peak was very short and in that peak he fought no one in the excellent category never mind a great one. Holmes was obviously finished. In this peak he was a serious match for anyone - very fast, hard to hit, power from every angle, every shot thrown aimed at taking your head off, very sharp and accurate and the best short puncher in history. But he also had very serious disadvantages with this short arms.
@prefix253
@prefix253 4 ай бұрын
@@Carl-nj1op My perspective is that the best version of Mike beats the best version of any other heavyweight we've seen. Furthermore, being able to kick so much ass at such a high intensity against heavyweights who were almost always taller and larger than him (since he was just 5'10) puts him in the GOAT position imo. And his "disadvantage with short arms" was actually a massive factor in his advantage (as to why he hit so hard and was so devastating on the inside). Short arms are only a problem if you can't close the distance. Prime Mike Tyson closed the distance with varying ease against the best of his time. Say what you want about his competition, but Spinx, Ribalta, and Tony Tucker were all undefeated until they met Mike, with Spinx being an absolutely amazing fighter to anyone who knows more than Tyson highlight footage. And Razor Ruddock was an absolute beast, a clear challenge to Mike (which he overcame twice). I think that prime Mike would beat any of the other past legends.

II grew up in the 80s. Iron Mike was a phenom onto himself. He is 5'10" built like a brick shed you might say. Speed and power. A saying he used everybody has a plan....until they get hit. The man was known for his 1st KOs. Jokes about how you settle yourself into your seat to enjoy the fight as the bell rings to start the fight. Then Tyson launches his attack and the bell rings to end the fight. That was common. Also peole complaining about what they paid on Pay Per View to see the match, only to see it end in 30 seconds. Now if you have an interest in MMA (mixed martial arts, you might enjoy the legendady Bas Ruten a dutch fighter and The King of Pancreas. A bit of grappling and kickboxing that made for very exciting matches. Especially his famed liver punch. No one takes 3 and continues standing. Some opponents were rushed to the hospital because of liver damage. That would be on your right hand side below your rib cage. Make no mistake these fights have life long consequences. Do not EVER try this whomever reads this without training on how to protect yourself.

Tyson has maintained a steady weight of 200lbs through his most of his professional career. It's interesting your positive about his voice. His high pitch or diminutive voice & lisp impediment are what is most ridiculed, though people say nothing to his face. Today, Tyson's voice is more gravely.

Great channel yeah Tyson's style developed from his trainer; old school, notice very similar to aspects of Chinese martial arts in that Moves more front on ,takes nearly all power from his legs from forms of crouch . This way he is able at speed to work body and the head on either side. If opponent gloves up anticipating more blows to one side Tysons ability switches sides, fast. He often on attacks spins 90degrees like a marital artist creating angle and places opponent off balance. Knock out areas exposed and incredible body shots that when he gets one right in the ball park max power, winds opponent and simply opponent can't breath for a couple of minutes usually dropping one knee in canvass or Tyson knocks them out..

The craziest thing to me is how hard you would get hit if you had the audacity to take a tyson “KO punch” and not go down. You obviously are just trying to keep it together, so you’re distracted and your defense reflexes in a state of shock. Meanwhile, Tyson thought he won. Because, as far as he was concerned, he had executed his physical gameplan and you should be done. In team sports, less physically brutal sports, this often leads results in a momentum swing. When the leader(s) fires what they thought was a winning move, only to realize their resilient opponent is just as determined as ever. In a Tyson fight, Mike took that shit personally. He felt like he gave you a chance to go down like you should and ensure your own safety. And then you went and tried to keep fighting. Open season. His finishing ability was fucking “awesome” in the truest sense of the word.

Here in Britain we wee so invested in the fight between him and our guy Frank Bruno. Frank was a true gentle giant and an established personality, so it kinda hurt to see him getting hit. He did well. I think they fought twice.

Tyson was a short 5ft-11 and weighed between 215 and 219. Near the bottom of the heavyweight division but he was so compact and powerful with great hand speed. He became heavyweight champion in 1986 at 20 yrs old. The youngest heavyweight champ ever I think.

I still remember the night when I decided to stay home instead of watching his fight vs buster Douglas at a friends house. Back then we thought nobody could ever possibly beat him. My friend called and said he lost and I didn’t believe it. This was back before internet for mass media and I watched the tv constantly to see if it was true. My parents came home from a night out and I told him I heard Tyson lost and they laughed as if it wasn’t possible. I probably waited a few hours longer before I found out it was true.

Not only was Tyson a short heavyweight, but he would actually duck a lot, making him a nightmare to hit for tall opponents. His guard was just so good, and he would utilise his speed to land devastating uppercuts

One of the most impressive combos that Tyson loved to do was to come in with a hard shot to the side of the body near the kidneys, which activates a reflex where the opponent has to drop their guard (I know this bc I’ve been hit there during sparring many times) and then he would get a clean head shot before they could bring their guard back up. It was lightning fast and devastating. There is an excellent example of it at 3:45 in this video.

Tyson was scary because not only did he have one of the most devastating punches in boxing history, regarding power, he was also accurate as you can see in the video, when he threw his punches, he made damn sure they landed and hurt. You add the speed & defense, he was so good at his peak. His behavior outside the ring ended his reign as champ, if he kept that in check, he'd be up there as the GOAT

Mike was 180 lb 13 year old when he met Cus, there's footage of him knocking out grown men in Olympic trials at 14 or 15? before he went pro. Just the wild combination of talent, genetics, dedication to the sport and a world class trainer. Undisputed GOAT and I really don't think anyone will change that.

Mike Tyson was relatively short for a heavyweight. Like 5'9" or 5'10". I saw Tyson in person twice. Once in 1985 in Albany NY...he was walking a Shar-Pei puppy in a trench coat and newsboy cap. And once, in 1991, at Octagon Nightclub in Manhattan. Both times I was amazed at how short he was...in light of the legends surrounding him...and how massively wide his shoulders were. Picture Ben Grimm from Marvel's Fantastic Four and you'll get an idea. Like he might have needed to turn sideways to get through a standard doorway. Looked incredibly powerful. I also know he was locked up in his youth in both Tryon and Spofford. Both notorious juvenile gladiator schools in NY. I recall there used to be a clip, on KZbin, of an adolescent 180lb Mike Tyson knocking out a correction officer, in a sallyport, in one of these facilities. It was CCTV footage...in black/white with no volume. A pre-teen, untrained, Mike Tyson whooped...beat senseless...a LARGE adult male...EFFORTLESSLY. That's power.

As usual, insightful stuff from your commentary. But when you say Tyson wasn't 'big' then if you mean height-wise (listed at 5'10, but closer to 5'9, IMO), he was shorter than most of his opponents. But weight/power? MUCH different story there, as Tyson was a bullish 225 pounds of compacted, brute muscle, and most great heavyweights (from Ali, etc.) fought in the 220+/- pound class anyway, so Tyson matched power-for-power NO PROBLEM. Tyson had a squat, heavily-muscled body, stronger and with arguably the best hitting power of any heavyweight in boxing history. In a word on Tyson's prime: SCARY. P.S. As you seem to like backstories, check out the heart-warming story of Tyson and his now-deceased mentor, Cus D'Amato. Many people (including myself) say Tyson was never at his most dominant than when Cus was still alive and Mike would do anything for the man. Then after Cus became ill and died, Tyson was crushed. And that's when Iron Mike began to unravel, both professionally and in his personal life.

Mike Tyson is 5' 10", around 218 lbs. for the majority of the fights featured in this video. He was considered to be an undersized Heavyweight in the 80's and was considered very small by the 90's. Never before had a fighter overcome such vast mismatches in weight, height and reach over the course of their career. 50-6, 2 No Contests with 44 KO. Impressive power, speed and technique. Mike's career spanned from 1986-2005. 16 of his first 28 fights ended with first round knockout or TKO. Check out Muhammed Ali, Roy Jones Jr., Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Canelo Alvarez, Erik Morales and Floyd Mayweather for some of the more interesting prolific and interesting pugilists.
