Sadly airlines have created part of this problem because of them loosing our luggage often. They have lost trust that our luggage not may get from point A to point B. Then offloading can be a bit slower. People just want to get off and get going.

Craziest bin fight was over 'artisan' bread. 3 ft bread took an entire bin, and the woman was adamant it could only be used for 'her' bread because it was artisan. $15. My husband got up, put the bread in her lap (yes she was squawking) he loaded the luggage and then put the bread above it. As she spooled up to start screaming, he gave her that look he has. Agreed! Honestly? This is the one thing that I don't like about this channel - I know most of the time, the tips are within the rules, but I do feel like it's taking the piss (to use a Kiwi term) a bit, when 'normal' travellers who check their luggage and just take *one bag* (and an actual appropriately-sized personal item, like a handbag) are disadvantaged because there's not enough storage space with the massive carryon luggage everyone seems to bring - I just feel like the advice to use carryon only is a bit irresponsible, and is perpetuating the problem. Carryon should be for things you need in-flight, and emergency items if there's a problem with your luggage. I would like to see less posts about how to fit everything into carryon, tbh 😕

There are ways to not pay bag fees. I've flown for many years and rarely, if ever, pay for bag fees. 1) Fly an airline that doesn't charge for bags; yes, they exist. 2) Airline status or loyalty programs - some employers offer status as a perk for some airlines. Plus, if you fly often enough or earn status through credit cards, you can get free bags. 3) Airline credit cards - If you fly more than once a year on the same airline, the fee for the card more than covers the bag fees you'd pay. (Free bags are often a perk). Airline cards also help you earn the aforementioned airline status. 4) Buy a higher class of service 5) If the gate agent asks for volunteers to check bags, they will often waive fees. Learn to do some homework and become a more educated traveler. Use the system to your advantage.

As a frequent flyer I have observed no evidence of this. I have asked gate staff why they don’t enforce the restrictions and been told that they do not want to confront passengers who may become hostile and abusive. I feel particularly sorry for those who play by the rules but then find no overhead room because they are in the last groups to board. A little consideration for others would go a long way.

@@DoReMeaCulpa Do you think people would be doing it if the airlines charged the baggage fee as part of the ticket? Or do you think people would be doing it if baggage fees were reasonable? They're not, by the way. In many cases they are more than the ticket itself. For example, if a Ryanair flight that would cost €60 without luggage included (1 reasonably-sized carry-on that is adequate to store small clothing items, toiletries, etc. for a short trip to the sun + 1 small item purse/sling/shopping bag/pillow) now cost €100 but with the luggage included, and Ryanair were strict on the size and quantities of these bags, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? Or another example, if a Ryanair flight cost €60 without luggage fees but had an optional luggage fee of €10 for the aforementioned bag quantities/sizes, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? How many would risk it for €10 on a €60 flight? I know myself I would just pay the €10. But as I said, it's never just €10. From what I can tell, the reason for the frustration and adoption of 'cheating' and 'deception' is because airlines themselves are being 'deceptive' and are 'cheating' the customers. They advertise low fare airline tickets, but then squash you with needlessly difficult booking procedures and baggage limits. The whole process from these companies is a deliberate attempt to manipulate consumers. That's why consumers are rejecting it and finding loopholes, in my opinion. Not because they're selfish or dishonest but because they are being manipulated and won't stand for it. Change the system and the consumers might change with it.

@@petek5523 That's exactly why I chose them. It's about consumer's perception, and that's the whole point of my comment. If a flier is paying €60 for the ticket and €10 for the baggage versus €30 for the ticket and €40 for the baggage, what consumer is not going to question the legitimacy of that and try to find a way around it by steadily increasing the size or quantities of their bags? It's common sense. The customer would pay the exact same amount, but in their mind it's completely reasonable and par for the course. The whole system is broken. It manipulates consumers into paying more than what they think is justifiable. But take away the ambiguity and the frustration of overpriced baggage fees while increasing the cost of the ticket to ensure airlines earn their wages, the issue might just disappear.

Ultimately these penny pinching tactics are only going to make cranky travels even more irate. Considering how common it is for people to become whiny babies on a plane anymore, I really don't see the point in adding extra obstacles that are going to instigate these actions. How is this only just happening in the US? Airlines have been strict about carry-on baggage in Europe for decades, including one carry-on bag only (no personal item, unless you're travelling business class). Some carriers even have a stricter size limit than standard for carry-on items. When I was travelling a lot, I used a lightweight backpack within the dimensions for carry-on luggage. No wheels and telescopic handle means more weight for clothes etc. A backpack is better than a shoulder bag because it distributes the weight across both shoulders, so there's less possibility of back trouble (from personal experience). And if you're at the gate with a backpack and it looks within the allowed size and doesn't look overstuffed, it is less likely to get weighed.

As someone who needs to carry medication, and this medication often uses a whole bag. I cant put it in a checked bag because the medication needs to stay cool, and if the checked bag gets lost (which they often do), that leaves my life literally at risk. So im already limited to 1 free carryon bag due to this. Even if i could pack my medication into a checked bag, inherently i am unable to pack just as much as everyone else. If they change it to just one carryon, i think there needs to be mandatory (not “hopeful”) allowances for people that have medical bags. Its already inherently unfair that everyone else can have two completely empty carry on bags to fill up, and I often can’t. If it becomes only one bag I may as well not take anything with me.

So lucky to be from Canada. Last month I bought a direct return (no stops) ticket going from San Jose Costa Rica SJO to Toronto YYZ and Return fof 288 each way seat choice included with 1 free bag and the second bag free because I’m a Veteran plus 1 free carry on. Remember the USA to dollar is 30% currently so deduct 30% if you’re in USA. What a really great deal.

I don’t get why people need to bring so much baggage with them into the airplane cabin. I personally pay for one suitcase, pack all the crap I want in it and not have to worry about getting overhead bin space. Alls I bring in the cabin of the plane is my essential stuff I would want on that flight such as my wallet, iPad etc.

I don't travel often, but so far only one airline bothered to weigh my carry- on prior to 2019, and they were quite strict about it! (It was Air New Zealand). I saw some pretty shameless carry-on behavior on my last trip to the UK, for sure. There was an older Asian couple with two carry-on sized pieces each, PLUS personal items, and they had the gall to put all 4 bags into the overhead bin of our Virgin plane when 2 should have been checked. Plus people with the GIANT bags that are definitely not carry-on sized, and the ones who stick their bags above YOUR seat instead of theirs, because yours is closer to the exit. Ugh. Flying just brings out the worst in everyone, airlines included. I completely understand weighing bags and not allowing shopping bags as separate (free) personal items anymore, but making you count a pillow as one of your two luggage items? Shameless cash grab!

I'm always convinced that unless you're just flying with a backpack only, those "low cost / budget" airlines actually cost about the same as a major brand like United or Delta (if not more). The only people who really can score good deals are those who just have a backpack that sits under the seat (which is free on pretty much all airlines, budget or luxury).

Everyone wouldn’t be trying to get all of their stuff on the plane if they hadn’t been squeezing us for every penny. It gets worse every year. More expensive tickets for less space, both personal and for luggage. Many tickets now charge to check baggage so it makes everyone try to travel with carryon only. They did this.

Always a terrific and pertinent video. If they want to streamline and speed up boarding, they could just board from the last rows forward. My problem is in my carry on I need to carry a computer, bunch of batteries. None of this stuff is supposed to go in checked in bags. I think without my Nikon ~5 lbs (2 kg), my carry on has been 32 lbs (14.5 kg). As I approach check in or the gate my main carry on is a roll top dry bag, so I roll it down really tight. I also make sure the way I sling it makes it look easy, so the assumption is it's not that heavy, and keep it behind me. I was almost dinged on a ferry because out of curiosity while waiting for my clerk to come back to the counter I weighed my carry on. Another clerk spotted it, scolded me... I started to explain/complain. She gave up, let the other guy decide. A ferry. In Vietnam I was dinged by a truly malevolent clerk. She made me take everything that couldn't be checked out of my blue roll top bag, put it in my light weight day bag. The now checked but empty blue bag weighed 2 kg contained a book, some paper, almost nothing. My bulging Montbell bag was still overweight but allowed. What I take away from your video for my batteries is: be polite, but firm, explain that all the weight is batteries and electronics which can't be checked... and promise I'll be quick, stow it anywhere on board the attendants want, and mention that I always help other passengers with their bags. (I'll pull out the Montbell bag which has what I might need during the flight and leave my bigger carryon in first class at the front of the plane. )

Thanks for sharing, and for distilling it down to your personal takeaway! It sounds like for you it's more a matter of weight than size, as the batteries are compact enough that I assume your bag(s) fit in the sizers no prob. So indeed, I think your takeaway is sound :-)

That's it. Something else. I always seem to struggle trying to find clear rules, measurements, weights, etc.. My son once told me, "You can check two bags." Two days of searches, this wasn't clear. It seems to me that vagueness, which creates insecurity and anxiety, is part of the policies at the airlines. Like if they clearly said two checked bags everyone would bring two. Google doesn't help when it includes out of date information.

I say, hallelujah! I’m tired of rude passengers carrying bags that are larger than what’s allowed, or their small bag that should go under the seat in front of them, is too large and they instead put it into the overhead bin thus leaving no space for those who come in last.

I heartily endorse the Scott evest model. Not only is it great for securely stowing many things like phone, AirPods, ereader,glasses,RFID passport area, it’s great to wear at your destination even in pickpocket crazy places like Venice and Barcelona. Additionally, you’ll have everything you need during the flight literally “on” you eliminating the need to dive for the underseat bag ( especially when you’re in a bulkhead seat). Security is easy, just take it off and put the whole thing zipped up tight in a bin.

@@NCJulaine Great questions! I personally like having a separate dedicated ultralight packable rain jacket. So ultimately I would suggest all 3 because they give you more flexibility in different situations and climates. In terms of prioritizing, the rain jacket would be most important and can be used in any climate. The down jacket only if you're going somewhere cool/cold, and in terms of ScottEVest, whatever clothing item you feel would most suit your style and needs! There's lots to choose from.

We always travel with one checked bag and a carryon. Recently we changed the carryon to the “underseat” style to avoid the fight for overhead bin space. This was foiled on our last flight due to the underseat space being blocked by some kind of electrical box, so we ended up having to remove critical items from the bag and try to find overhead bin space after all🤦‍♀️

@NoraDunn

Personally I would be a bit worried about investing in a max sized- carry-on case, because if the allowable sizes change even a little bit, it will be considered too large. Also if I'm not mistaken, the Monos carry-on Plus is sized for US domestic airlines but not always international regulations. You might want to take a peek at possible destinations you might fly to in the years to come and glance at their allowable sizes.

If airlines allowed two free checked bags and charged for non personal item carry ons, boarding time would not be much of an issue...or...if planes were boarded by row starting at the rear, clogged aisles are not a problem
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Ай бұрын
Indeed, charging for all carry on and allowing free checked could be a proactive way to encourage more people to check their bags. Also, I agree that boarding order is not efficient. I watched some interesting videos about this....apparently one of the more efficient ways would be window seats first, then middle, then aisle. I even saw one that illustrated how boarding odd numbered rows then even numbered rows could be amazingly efficient! It would be nearly impossible to introduce and enforce though.
