Old Low Light Heritage Centre Trustee, Nina Brown, tells the story of Norah Balls (1886-1980) a remarkable daughter of North Shields. Norah was a staunch supporter of the suffragette movement and an active member of the Women's Social and Political Union. She knew Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Davidson; took part in many protests; and in 1910 was arrested outside Parliament on a charge of assaulting a Police officer.
In later life she became a Magistrate, a campaigning social reformer, a champion of women's rights, and a tireless advocate for the community of North Shields.
This presentation is based on research into Norah's life and times for a display that celebrated the centenary of women's suffrage held at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, North Shields in 2018.
Nina Brown and The Old Low Light Heritage Centre would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project, assisted with research, and took part in the anniversary events.
