I didn't know that there was an Alltronics in the US? I thought that they were an Australian outfit? I wonder if they are the same thing? It's a great piece of retro tech, but ESR just isn't enough for capacitor testing! The ultimate tool is an LCR Bridge which is currently available on eBay, I got mine for $95Au after watching a video on it over at XRayTonyB's channel, it gives a reading for capacity, ESR, disapation, Quality factor and phase angle! If you need to know exactly everything about capacitors, inductors and resistors... Then this is the best tool! I swear by it and highly recommend it! The one that Tony got is in a silver aluminium case, I got the newer version which has a built-in lithium rechargeable battery via USB C and it's in a black case with a blue screen instead of the lime green on the older one, both are good! Once you watch Tony's video, you will want one! I had been watching it for years but held off from buying it because it looked complicated with all the information displayed on it's screen but once I saw it in Tony's video, it was kinda like a how to use video, I realized that it's super easy to use and jumped out to get one as fast as I could! This LCR Bridge will replace your new ESR meter as soon as it shows up! It really is that good! It truly deserves much more awareness. If you are serious about knowing everything about a capacitor, inductor or resistor... Then you need this!

Thanks for the quick response on my question. I built the esr kit because of your video. I have a capacitor wizard and like it alot but the blue esr gives you a reading where the capacitor wizard say to compare. Thanks for making video's of your repairs , I find them educational.

I have had "Ol Blue" in my shopping cart for a while along with the MESR-100 V2 and been waiting for a quality review on YT to show how well either work with in circuit testing. If you could show a side by side comparison of your MUL3333 vs Blue, I would be ever so grateful. For the record I know you like to remove one lead, but if you could entertain a true in-circuit test just for giggles, it would be interesting to see if the results are similar between both meters.

Why did you skip using the IC sockets? Those are kinda important for heat sensitive ICs.

Unless it is a high failure rate IC then I typically don't use sockets. I have been hand soldering IC's since the early 80's.

Steve, I bought a digital esr, it not the blue Anatek, but, I'll tell you, I like my analog version better, maybe the digital one I have isn't as good as the blue ones.....I believe they all send a 100k htz signal through, so hopefully you'll do some videos on the accuracy of these blue esr meters. If they work well, I may do a kit myself. We'll be awaiting results..😉

That's all good but unfortunately it's not a very useful tool. It only read's the ESR, no capacity, no disapation, no Quality factor and no phase angle... There's a good Video on XRayTonyB's channel on such a LCR Bridge Meter which is available on eBay, you will never use any other tool for capacitor testing, that's how good it is... Trust me, ESR is not enough! Just imagine, all the information displayed at the same time on one screen! No need for multiple tools.. and it's just as easy to use as these things! Just search for LCR Bridge on eBay, there's a silver aluminium case version with a lime green LCD screen, and s new version in black aluminium case with a blue screen and a built-in rechargeable battery via USB C... If you are not using this, then you really don't know what the capacitor condition is in, an ESR tester can't tell you! There's many capacitor failure modes and you need to see them all at the same time... You won't regret it, best tool that you have ever spent money on!

@@ZilogBob and this is exactly the reason why people whom have had equipment repaired by a technician would have had a bad experience and would rather throw it out than have it repaired! Sure, some things should be thrown out, they shouldn't have been made in the first place! But junk electronics is another topic altogether... I don't want to be known as that person who is only interested in a quick dollar and for that reason I won't work on junk electronics! If you have come to me for repairs, you are going to get a repair for that device that you will not need to have it looked at again for the next 20 to 30 years! I always try to do my best to restore it unless the customer is only interested in retrieving data or something personal from the device and it can be then recycled... Put it in this perspective, if you have something that you consider to be valuable to you for whatever reason! You know that after I have finished with it, it's not going to come back to me next month or year! I'm not interested in getting your equipment working for a short time! Especially if it has been working for the last 30+ years! And yeah it costs more, but not that much more. Once you get into the habit, you would be surprised at how quick it is when you have it down pat! But I have a thorough understanding of components and their failure modes... So I know where it went wrong and why it went wrong and where it's going to go wrong next if I only just get it working... But that's just me and I always have a lot of work! An ESR meter is almost useless, you are not saving any time by testing in circuit... Failure of components is mainly due to a capacitor that is leaking DC current! And if there's one, there's always more! And unfortunately the only way to check is to remove capacitors out of circuit and test... A good LCR Bridge Meter will be able to tell you if you should replace the same capacitor or replace with a new one!.. Everyone talks about ESR but it seems that no one has ever tried to place a resistor in series with a capacitor to see what happens and then do the same with a resistor in parallel and watch how quickly transistors let out the magic smoke! But if all you ever do is replace the burnt bit and send it back, your concern about earning money will grow as you don't constantly get repeat customers, hmmm I wonder why?..
