Patrick Roy grew up in Québec City and dreamed of playing for the Nordiques. Dan Bouchard was his idol.

@ Dan Bouchard back in the 93 playoffs while serving as Nords goalie coach said that after going 2-0 on the Habs in the 1st round that the Nords had solved Roy!! That comment infuriated Roy & he used it as motivation for the rest of the series & eventually throughout the remainder of the playoffs all the way to the Cup. Roy never forgave Bouchard for making that comment.

The "flaws" of Patrick Roy The two goalkeepers initially narrowly missed each other in the Quebec-Montreal rivalry. Roy started with the Canadiens during the 1985-1986 season when Bouchard had just left the Nordiques to finish his career with the Winnipeg Jets. However, their fates crossed again in 1993, during a famous Canadiens-Nordiques series. Daniel Bouchard was then the goaltending coach in Boston, and he had the misfortune to say that he had found flaws in the game of "Casseau". I was talking with [Nordiques physiotherapist] Jacques Lavergne and I had said a comment about it. Unfortunately, there were two journalists from La Presse behind who listened to this, recalls Daniel Bouchard. I had flaws in my game. His statement never had an impact on my performance, says Patrick Roy today, laughing. Never mind, Canadian coach Jacques Demers was quick to use the statement to motivate his players. The Nordiques, who had won the first two games, lost the next four. Many blamed Roy's good performance and the Nordiques' loss on Bouchard.

Bassen scoring here, he had the last NHL goal at the Colisee with an empty netter in game 5 against the Rangers if I recall correctly. So he scored in both of the last games the Nordiques played in the NHL's Quebec cities.

Young goalies will marvel at the way goalies played. This was the dawn of the butterfly stance we have today. Roy was one of the first to usher it in. There was still a lot of acrobatics but the basics are there. The pads still weren’t set up like they are today for that style. I will say this. Some of those goals would not have gone in today with the style they play. Not saying it is good or bad. It is fun seeing goalies back in the day with their individual styles. Today it is very structured with little or no room for individuality.

It's a give an take. Shots are harder and faster, the gear had to be upgraded to a point where we can now focus on solely stopping the puxk and not worried about getting hurt. Once that happened, going on the ground and squaring up infront became a norm . I remember learning the T push to stop quick passes across lol. Now butterfly slide is all you need lol

And unfortunately there will never be an NHL team again in Québec City until Gary Bettman is commissioner. There is also a lot to understand the reasons why the Nordiques joined the NHL from 1979 to 1995, I mean a lot of factors. The end of the WHA, bring back to the NHL all the players who "deserted" like Howe (Whalers), Hull (Jets) and, the futur of hockey, Gretzky (Oilers). The only other team from the WHA to join the NHL was the Québec Nordiques. Why? They were making money and there was plenty of talent. The NHL and other teams forced the Montréal Canadiens to accept the Québec Nordiques to join the league. A lot, a lot, a lot to read!

@ It has nothing to with Bettman it is more the CAD is shit and unfortunetly even with that beautiful arena Quebecor could not afford the then 500 M USD expansion and now that Seattle is paying 750 USD for the 32nd franchise Quebec city will not get another franchise unless there is another Atlanta Thrashers situation where a team gets kicked out of there building and needs a new home ASAP.

He broke all of bobby orr's records in junior. Many of his peers said he was the best player they've ever seen. Mats sundin said this about him, "he could skate faster, shoot harder and pass crisper while drunk than the rest of us could while sober". Unfortunately he could not stay sober and was consumed by alcohol and drug addiction. A lot of people around hockey during that time truly believed he had the potential to be a top 5 player of all time had he been able to just focus on hockey.

At the very end of the 3rd period ... JJ Daigneault (#48 of Montreal) knocks off the net in front of the REF without having a penalty whatsoever. I remember when Quebec entered the NHL in 1979 (Montreal & Toronto) were the teams that doesn't want them to enter the NHL as for Vancouver and Buffalo who entered in 1970 (Toronto especially). Montreal has only missed the Playoffs once since (1979-95) when the Nordiques were in the League ... it were in 1995. Since Quebec left the NHL ... Montreal has missed the Playoffs several times, so by having Quebec right back would help Montreal to have a better performance on that field has they did during the old days.

That probably was Bryan Fogarty’s best game with Montreal against his old team in one of his final NHL games. Sad that his NHL career ended that month and his life ended tragically 7 years later at age 32. He could have been one of the top defence men ever with his talent.

Québec had two 1rst round picks in 1987 and they drafted Fogerty before Sakic. Amazing!

C'était la première fois que j'assistais à une partie de NHL le lendemain j'allais à Québec au Colisé pour Canadiens vs Nordiques puis retour le samedi au Forum pour Pinguoins vs Canadiens Voilà j'étais venu pour la première fois au Québec avec un copain depuis la Suisse juste pour voir 3 matchs NHL! Depuis j'ai traversé l'atlantique à 17 reprises pour voir des parties, à Tampa, Miami, les 2 New-York, New Jersey, Toronto et Ottawa pour environ 45 partie.

If you'll allow a tiny correction, as a quebec francophone: it's "...et le but!!" which is the equivalent to "He scores!!" or "...and he scores" which closes a descriptive statement like "Here's Sakic with the puck, turns on himself... shoots... AND HE SCORES!!" Otherwise it could just be "Le but!!" to just state there is a goal, usually if you weren't talking for a few moments, or if you talking about something else which happens when commentators are talking about stats, or who the next opponent will be etc.. caught off guard like that you just say "Le but!". Hope it helps!

Le collègue de Pothier est effectivement Gilles Tremblay. À titre d'information complémentaire, les matchs du Canadien ont été radiodiffusés à la radio de la SRC jusqu'en 1997.

I had thought that the Quebec Nordiques went out of business inn the spring of 1995 and that the Colorado Avalanche (an expansion team that was set to begin play in the fall of 1995) got assigned the player contracts of the defunct Nordiques.

The Québec Nordiques were sold to ComSat at the end of the 94-95 season for 75M$. That's it.

I'm in Québec City now, working on my French, love the city but it is simply too small for a major league franchise here. This is a government town too so there aren't all these millionaires around to fill up the seats. I would love to get the Nordiques back here but it's not realistic.

Winnipeg was thought to be too small. It was thought there wouldn't be enough corporate sponsors to fill up seats. That hasn't stopped them and the city has proved everyone wrong. Bigger is not always better. Big market Atlanta failed twice.

I'm in Québec City too and I'm sure there will never be an NHL team again here. Two of the reasons are Gary Bettman wants big cities like Seattle and Houston much before a small 700k people city... and the Montréal Canadiens will always oppose another team take place in the province of Québec, which is their territory. 1979-1995's Nordiques were an exception due to the collapse of the WHA, so the NHL needed to bring back the best players and the financially healthy teams. Québec sold their tickets and always did, Montréal was forced by other teams and the league to "split" their territory and they were pissed off. This was literally war over here. And it was fun to watch!

Quebec might be small but the fan base is bigger than most NHL team. Look at crap location like Phoenix, it's a disgrace to see the empty arena. In Quebec the coliseum was 100% full each and every match.

They now have a new state-of-the-art arena that'll bring excitement and instant credibility to hockey fans in Quebec. Winnipeg has proven that a good and passionate fan base, no matter how small it may be, will always sellout NHL games. Also if note, the Canadian dollar is in much better shape now than in the 1990s, which led to the original Nordiques and the original Winnipeg Jets to leave Canada in the first place. So just based on finances, Quebecers are poised to welcome the Nordiques back to the NHL.

If the Nordiques can't come back to Quebec,I wish the Canadiens would buy the rights to the Nordiques name and branding ,move their affiliate to Quebec City,and rename them the Nordiques. It's not the best thing,but it's something...as a Canadiens fan,I miss the rivalry,but for it to be successful,the Nordiques would need to start strong,like Vegas did,that way you keep a fan base (of course,one would hope a new Nordiques ownership wouldn't be as toxic as Vegas' owners)

They sort of tried that from 1999-2002 when they had their then AHL team the Citadelles play in Quebec City. That of which apparently didn't work out so well, due to few former Nordiques fans not exactly wanting to support a Habs farm team. Q.C. also had the IHL for two years from 1996-1998, which obviously didn't last long either too.

I think that Quebec City was too small a market to support an NHL team. Maybe they could be the home of Montreal's AHL farm club and maybe the Canadiens could play two regular-season games a year in Quebec City.

Big market is not everything. Just look how well Winnipeg is doing. The team is making money, they have corporate sponsors, and the building is filled every night. There's no reason Quebec City would not be able to do the same thing. And if you watch exhibition games in which the Habs play in Quebec City, you see the fans there really want their own team to cheer for again, and not just settle on the Habs as a default. The NHL needs the Battle of Quebec again. It was great hockey, and it would be a lot more interesting than seeing games played in non-traditional markets with half-full arenas that are constantly losing money.

Montréal's AHL team is presently very well located: next city North of Montréal. Players are easily moved up and down. Ideal situation for Mtl. As for Québec City's fans... they would never, never!, follow Mtl's AHL team! When the Canadiens play exhibition games in Québec City, a lot of old Nordiques fans turn Mtl opponents fans!!

Québec would have been having as much success as the Jets in the box if they would entered the league 8-10 years ago. Now fans all over the province feel cheated by gov'ts, PKPéladeau and the NHL. The AHL never really worked in Québec and I understand why. They rather keep the Remparts with 10 000 attendance avg. when they had competitive team before the plandemic.

Malgré la propagande médiatique, Québec avait le plus bas taux de chômage au Canada avant la plandémie et aurait eu le même succès que les Jets, voir plus alors que les matches contre les Canadiens, Leafs, Penguins seraient disputé à guichet fermé (+18000 au centre Vidéotron vs 15 000 au MTS centre). Ottawa est tout juste rentable, parce qu'ils triplent le prix des billets contre Mtl et Toronto en pouvoir remplir l'aréna aussi.
