The design of of Skyrim was based off of conan the barbarian. The design of Nords in Morrowind was based off of a hybrid between celtic and nordic mythology and history. Funnily enough the Morrowind designs more closely resemble something out of Conan’s hyperborean age than what skyrim tries to achieve.

Morrowind was made in the late 90’s by a team of nerds who would’ve absolutely been fans of Robert’s work, but being nerds and passionate ones at that, they also would look into historical accounts of various cultures and peoples as Robert himself did. The design of the dark elves are heavily influenced indian, and south east asian mythology and history for example. But decades later when Todd Howard was leading the development of Skyrim, he simply told his team that he wanted conan, this team of relatively fresh faces most likely wouldn’t be nearly as familiar with Robert’s work, Nor did they manage to maintain the historical inspirations for the Nords despite a lot of the lead designers being the old guard from Morrowind, they’re not solely responsible for every design made, they simply act as quality control. The end result being something that strictly aesthetically resembles a watered-down conan, it mostly captures the look, but not the soul and not the feeling of it. It was a depiction of conan from people who probably weren’t fans of conan, as opposed a depiction by fans who’re very passionate about the series. The lore and look of the nords aren’t the only casualty, as the fallout IP and it’s heavy inspiration from mad max was also watered down with Bethesda’s additions to the franchise. None of this to say that skyrim was bad, mind you, the product we got was still phenomenal and has had a hard time aging, the art teams really captured something special, it’s just a shame we’ll never get to see that more insane, schizophrenic, celtic/norse vision of the nord homeland as described in Morrowind.

​​@@thebigenchilada678 with morrowind things were somewhat divided, there were two factions working on the game: the old heads who wanted to make a more traditional rpg like they did with daggerfall, and the new heads who flat out called that prototype boring and wanted to make something original and damn the marketing. like the best example of this is the dwemer tales, which made the dwarves more warm and eccentric than cold and ruthless and there were a lot of back and forths about this until one person decided that it would be better to change the notes at the end of the tales to make the author some kind of hack, lol. kirkbride avoided a lot of the safe "lord dunsany" fantasy tropes, but then todd watched lord of the rings and instead of the more divided setting with hints of horror that was flat out inspired by elric of melniboné, they turned cyrodiil into middle-earth, lol. and that's just the trend they stuck with, the most marketable clean fantasy stuff they can put out. skyrim was even supposed to have whales flying in the sky, lol

They believed they were breathed into the world by Kyne. The thu'um wasn't the dragon's tongue and wind was a force intrinsically and spiritually connected with them and their culture. They were immune to cold so they barely needed any clothing. They used magic paint on their bodies that protected them like armor, Talos wasn't all that important compared to other gods from the Nordic religion (which Bethesda got rid of because of pure laziness) and much, much more.

But that's the thing, old lore wasn't realistic, it was mysterious, magical, inspired, alien. Nords were indeed isolationists. They considered themselves to be fundamentally different from any other race, even other humans. When Bethesda decided to ditch their previous (and better) ideas in favor of copying other IPs and mass appeal, they didn't just change gameplay, they made all the lore shallow as well. Well, that's what several centuries of cultural dilution will do to you. It's weird too, because like, the guy who *makes* the Cyrodilic empire *was* a Nord. All the Nord's too weak to hack it as "true" nords found nice lives and had kids with people, while all the "real" nords went out and died in glorious battle. The idea of not having spells, nor an enchanted weapon or scroll ... overwelms me. Whatever strength he has in that sword... is otherworldly. Daedric, even. Yet again, he may be able to cleave a dragon in half with such sword, however he'll never be able to obliterate a city with a proper spell.
