The Rose Bowl has selected one HBCU Band every year for the last 5 or 6 years and NSU to me has clearly outshined them all and has set a very high standard for the future. From the unique uniforms to the awesome sound and dance steps and the beautiful young ladies of the dance team they made feel very proud as a person of color to have such an excellent performance on a national stage like that!!!

This Band So underrated. They play music, not blow noise. Fantastic. Been following them for years. Keep playing music. It's not just a Grove. Music enlightened your mind with the twist and turns. Great arrangements. Love the percussion section. Balanced and sounds like a set with the music. I am not a Spartan Legion but, I would have had I known about them. Director and staff. Awesome job. NSU.

I've never seen this band or even heard of the school, but was at the parade and wanted to say they far and away blew out the other bands with their sound. It was fantastic!! Those I was sitting near all commented on the phenomenal sound. Way to go!

That is how a band should sound, no blaring, you could hear the melody, woodwinds, drums were not drowning out every body else, instruments were not sharp or flat, they played on unison, etc!!!! Just outstanding!!!!💙💛🥰💯💛

I literally shed a tear after watching this. I have been following NSU since my youth and graduated from there in 2007. This last 3 days has been epic for the band. Everything they have done is world class from the Bandfest, to Disney to the parade. For so many years this band has been Hampton Roads own, today the world saw the magic this program makes! Love to all of the NSU alum!

As an alumna of the magnificent and legendary school, the NSU Spartan Marching Legion outdid themselves in the Rose Bowl Parade. I am so proud that my cousin Jalen was there to have that awesome experience! Thank you Marching Legion for showing the world what you can get at an HBCU! As a former member of the Million Dollar Funk Squad, which is the percussion section of the Marching Spartan Legion, I actually shed a few years watching this. It warmed my heart and was a great way to start my morning watching my favorite band on Earth do their thing. I marched back in the 90's and the Rose Bowl is one of the biggest parades in the States, it's an honor and a privilege to be invited to this Bowl and WE'RE THERE showing the nation how a marching band is supposed to perform. lol it was planned. They had a country singer singing on a float behind them so they told them to do a show while the float was stationary. I'm glad she was there.

Nope there was a medical emergency along the parade route ahead of them. It just so happens that NSU was in a spot for television. If you notice you see, in the foreground the white suitor talking to one of the directors, right before the drum majors marched to the side to turn the band towards the stands. The emergency held up the parade 30minutes. Great job on transition band.

​@@staffonsmith2080 actually according to the Norfolk State University band director William Bethea the Rose Parade committee asked the band to perform at the grandstand so the band staff knew months in advance that they would be at the grandstand. There was someone who had a heart attack on one of the floats. They were told that during the medical emergency they had to fill more time by playing more music.

It was spur of the moment and I couldn't ask the people to sit down so I had to hold the phone over my head for 12 minutes with a torn rotator cuff. Thank you for watching though, it was a great experience. It was also the only day it didn't rain while I was there so we were lucky to have a few dry hours.
