Yeah I looked at a few and seen over 100$ price tags for certain model transmissions which in that case if the mower don't cost much buy a decent used mower , harbor freight has cheap die and tap sets so that's an option too not sponsored... lol just if you need something like that and don't want to spend hundreds on a kit harbor freight got you covered or if you knew the size just buy the single tap for well probably close to 20$ maybe less

I recently did the same thing on what appears to be the very same model. The old transmission was shot, housing damaged, etc. Make sure to get the right part number! There's another one that looks the same but is for the rear-drive model and the wheels rotate the opposite direction. I've also seen a difference in the pulley diameter, not sure if that is a model year change or front/rear drive difference, but the belt size needs to match obviously. My one-owner mower has the same pulley as yours in the video. The Toro website has good information, I was able to provide the model and serial number and then download manuals. The only problem I had was getting details about the transmission internals from my local Toro parts supplier. They were able to access more details than I could (dealer access) but did email me an image or two that helped a lot in deciding to replace the entire transmission and axle assembly. Oh, and I used my mower as a push mower until fixing it... It's a heavy mower, unless you're cutting a smooth level yard I don't recommend it! The self-propelled drive helps a lot on slopes and uneven terrain.

My Toro had the same issue. I was going to replace the transmission. When I went to disassemble it I found the woodruff key and spring on the axle had been replaced by a square steel sheer pin and welded in place. Apparently the production line had run out of them and decided to keep the line moving. That soured me on Toro, however I just disabled the transmission and push it. Fourteen years later I'm still pushing it so I'm not so sour on Toro.

Great job however it looks like it really needs the HOC plate bearings replaced, they look completely wiped out. The input pinion gear always looses the black coating and gets a little grooved as it breaks in, it’s actually not worn badly it’s just formed to the ring gear. The bronze output shaft bushings are usually the only thing you need to replace on these to restore contact between the ring gear and the pinion gear. I found them somewhere for only a few bucks each and bought a bunch of extra ones since I used to make this repair on Toro and LawnBoy gearboxes all the time. Don’t see these great old ones much anymore, mostly just the newer Recyclers and LawnBoys with the sealed plastic gearbox.

I'm going to keep trying but really need to find a schematic of my mower and a parts list. While I appreciate the video, I regret buying a new transmission and taking this thing apart. With the help of the video, I was able to do everything until I had to loosen the nut attached to the pulley. It was impossible to loosen and I've tried wedging tools etc. in the housing to get it loose. I've wasted almost two hours trying to get this nut off. At this point, I'm thinking about just returning the $60 transmission and settling on this just being a push mower until I'm ready to take the plunge to purchase a new mower. Even if I do find a way to separate this nut from the pulley (which seems impossible), there is no guarantee that this new transmission will fix the problem. As you contemplate whether or not to take on a repair like this, you have to make a decision if it's worth your time and money to repair a mower that's over 10 years old. There is nothing wrong with the video & it is definitely helpful, but from my experience, repairs like this never seem to go smoothly and can cause more frustration than it's worth. Thanks for the video.
@HomeGaragechannel4 ай бұрын
sorry you're having a tough time with the nut. I've never come across one that was a paint to remove before
@edhondt4 ай бұрын
@@HomeGaragechannel Update: I managed to get the nut off by wedging a chisel inside the transmission housing. I think it was a 1 inch chisel. Luckily my brother had a better drill (time for me to upgrade) and the two of us were able to do it fairly quickly working together. Thanks to your video, I was able to piece everything together. The bolts self tapped into the housing nicely with a nut driver. I had the drive gear reversed on one of the wheels and a retaining clip popped off. Luckily it was stuck inside the wheel guard. I didn't notice it was reversed until the wheel was stopping and starting. After that was fixed, the new transmission worked like a charm. As long as the $60 transmission holds up and the lawnmower keeps working, I guess it will be worth it in the long run. Thanks again.🍻

The $15 dollar Re-store Snapper tranny was full of leaves when I got it so I cleaned it out and greased it back up with 00 Snapper grease but the pinion was worn out just as tours was. I ordered another pinion because it would lock up and have to be rolled forward every time the mower stopped moving. With a new pinion it has done just fine ever since. Replacing the transmission doesn't seem worth it to me. IDK what your plan is for this mower, but if it were me I'd have to sell it. With a working trans, it's probably worth about $100 maybe $120. Alternatively you could rip out the trans and sell it as a regular push mower for about $50-70. With that in mind, by the time you spent $60 on the trans, you broke even, and that doesn't account for the time and work you put into it. Then again, if this was going to be your personal lawn mower, $60 for a good self propelled lawn mower is a great deal!

My 49cc dirt bikes won't start and I have put a new carburetor on it

please confirm that it has spark, and if it does, then you'll need to get a compression tester and see if it's low.

i probably wouldn't have replaced the transmission. most times the math doesn't make sense. what would it be worth if you had sold it as is vs spending the $50 on a new transmission. most time the value only goes up by the cost of the parts and you loose money or make very little on the labor which most times just doesn't make sense.
@HomeGaragechannel3 жыл бұрын
you make a good point. 60 before replacement and 100 after. looks like you're right.

@@HomeGaragechannel the only thing i will sometimes spend money on is buying a used mulching bag. most of the time you can pick up a used one for about $20 and it will help increase the value by $40-50 on a good machine. also for some reason i find machines that have the mulching bag seem to sell quicker and easier.

oh nice to know that, thank you.

One reason why I never buy self propelled mowers
@HomeGaragechannel3 жыл бұрын
so you've only every bought and used push mowers?

@@HomeGaragechannel … Yes plus I have a JD rider as I have a 2.75 acre lawn I use my push mower on my front yard only and I mow twice a week as I’m using Scott’s fertilizer system for a very green lawn my push mower is a Toro with roller bearing wheels

@@HomeGaragechannel I seen you said to replace the grease in the transmission well when I did mine I didn't have grease on hand so I added oil in it and mixed it to thin the dried out grease just for now and to have some lubricant in there lol temp fix wish it had seals and took gear lube

Those Toro Transmissions are not that good, I have seen them go out often,

I know, this one happened to be on sale, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

@@HomeGaragechannel last 3 Toros I have. Gotten all had transmission problems 1st- I freed up with penetrating oil (axle was stuck from dirt and being left outside) 2nd I swapped the box and wheels from parts deck and greased up the box and it came back to working good enough. 3rd - newer one it moves forward fine but rolling backwards I think the plastic RWD gears having issues. It should be metal not plastic. For the RWD, FWD is fine to be plastic. Not RWD.

wow, you've had a lot of experience with them.

@@HomeGaragechannel Yah this year . It seemed that almost every mower I have gotten has been toro or lawnboy by toro. Engines have been including non Toros B&S quantum B&S new OHV Kohler Tecumseh No Briggs classic so far this year. Those classic ones you can’t kill They are like zombies that keep on. Crawling in the grass You likely haven’t seen the videos yet The are scheduled every Saturday thru 7/2 at the moment

Great mowers but the transmissions are so poorly designed… I’ve been down that road twice with transmission replacements.
