My dad used to have the same mower. It was actually the first lawnmower I ever used. He HATED the thing. Mostly because he left it outside a lot, and the cables and the wheels and everything froze up, and like you mentioned parts are expensive. Toward the end it had no self propel, a hose clamp to keep the engine running, and frozen front wheels. It all finally ended when the flywheel key sheared after he hit something, and he proceeded to smash it with a large rock after it ripped the pull cord out of his hand. We went through a lot of mowers and equipment when he was the one using them because he abused them and never did any maintenance. The one time he tried, he ended up filling the crankcase of the mower with anti-freeze and it obviously threw a rod.

Here’s my opinion on front caster wheels: for a standard, 21”-22” or smaller push mower, they would be nice to have on a commercial unit to save fatigue from all day mowing, but not really needed, and overkill on a residential unit. For a 30” residential unit, I think that they would be nice to have due to the weight of the machine, but not a necessity. For your 30”-32” walk behind self propelled commercial mowers, I think they would be almost a necessity due to the weight of the machines being easily 200 lbs and being much more difficult to maneuver. For the zero turn walk behinds, I think it goes without saying that front caster wheels are a necessity. So basically my opinion on caster wheels is that they depend on what type of walk behind you have.

If you look carefully you will see this is actually a Snapper Easyline #7800169 SPV21from about 2006. I have a Snapper Easyline SPV21 (non-caster wheel) I bought new in 2006 which is exactly the same as a John Deere JS30. For some unknown reason, John Deere sold this Snapper low end line (created after Simplicity bought Snapper) and the only difference is the green paint instead of Snapper red. The deck is Snapper, but the transmission is Simplicity and it isn't great. Nowhere near as good as a traditional Snapper friction disc type. I've never been able to find out why Deere sold a Snapper design as a Deere.

@@HomeGaragechannel Watching your video I see the front wheels and the retaining nut looks the same as a Snapper while the rear wheel on the Snapper is held on with a cotter pin, not a nut as seen on the JD. Great video, as usual. As far as your question goes about caster wheels, I own an Ariens push mower with caster wheels, and I don’t have that many obstacles in my yard, but I love them. Mine also has a lock, but I hardly use it as it’s easy to push straight even when the caster wheels are unlocked.

I enjoyed this video more than 99% of what is on television. While I still have an uncluttered front yard, I definitely have enough obstacles in the back yard to need this style mower. You must not have someone at home that likes to plant flowers and flowering bushes. If Deere still made them, I would consider buying one of these walk-behind zero turn mowers new. Just checked the JD website and everything they make now is a riding mower.

Not since 2011 has Deere made walk-behind equipment. It made a deal with Honda for its walk behind and handheld equipment to be sold in the Deere dealerships. Now that Honda has begun discontinuing manufacturing its walk behind mowers in the USA, I guess we'll see how this goes. Who knows, we may still see Honda mowers in North America, but will probably be shipped from France. I mean, my parents' 1985 Honda was made in Japan and up to a decade ago, mowers were still made for the Canadian market in Japan.

Fancy mowers command a decent markup. You are doing an excellent job with this mower and earned every bit of the profit. Sold my JC version for $70 years ago, as you know. Worn valve guides meant no lash adjustment. Rebuilt the leaking carburetor from recycled parts. Replaced the (expensive) clogged air filter. Sharpened the chipped blade. Tightened the intake pipe. Replaced spark plug. Painted the handle. Missing castor bracket, no accessories and no transmission. Not worth the effort. I did it for the aesthetic appeal as a patina artist and grandson of a late John Deere dealer. Maybe this information will help others to know exactly what to expect with John Deere. Best move it along quick as you can. Don't waste your time.

I just found the other day a cub cadet with front caster wheels just like this one at the curb in my neighborhood. It came with electric start in addition to a pull rope and it uses a commercial grade Kawasaki engine. Front casters on a self propel mower like this JD is a pretty unique design that makes it far easier to turn the mower without lifting the front end. I could see that being popular for older folks that have trouble lifting the mower. Good save!

I've used a 5/8x1/2 reducing bushing in wheels before. I've also heard 1/2" copper pipe is a good fit. I just dab a little bit of super glue on the outside of the bushing before I insert it. I also hammer out and save old bushings from damaged tires, so I have a few on hand. I would assume it's the same ones that fit into those wheels, from the look of the bolt.

This mower is very similar to mine. I have the more premium version of this mower (JS45) that is pretty similar to this. It has different wheels that have ball bearings instead of bushings. And it has a personal pace style system where the faster you walk the faster it moves. Parts cost a pretty penny because it’s John Deere. But if you go online to John Deere’s website and type in your model name and number you can still find parts for these even though they have been discontinued for a while. So I’m gonna keep putting money into mine because it’s built better than all the new crap that’s all plastic and made to break. My mower has gone through so much abuse. We used it so hard that both of the front caster wheels welds broke off 😂. We took it to a friends shop and the welded it all back up thankfully. And all the bushings in the castor system where the grease points are were so wore down so we replaced that with the wheels because the bearings were also shot. Our yard is very bumpy with tree roots sticking up everywhere and steep walk out basement hills we have to cut so it gets abused 😅 We also never installed the castor wheels lockers because we drive it straight enough when we use it. There is really no need for it. They are pretty easy to keep straight without those lockers. Every thing else is original besides what we listed that needed fixing. Our only engine issue is the coil that craps out when it’s hot. We gotta fix that because it’s really annoying when your taking a break on a hot day and you have to pull 30 times. I would keep it. That engine is hella powerful. It cuts through the tallest grass and barely bogs down. But if you mulch tall grass it likes to clump but that’s with every mower. So I would keep it. They are really nice and powerful! If you do part it out than I would probably need to buy that ignition coil if it works like it’s supposed to 😅 I don’t get the fuss people say on how they don’t go straight. Ours does with no lockers. All it takes it paying attention and adjusting when needed.

We have a toro just like made in about 1998 it was used when I bought it in 2004 we used it for another 4 or 5 years and the motor finally went bad I replaced the motor with a harbor freight predator engine at that time you could buy one for about 90 dollars and I was surprised it fix exactly where the other one was the bolt holes matched up perfectly the shaft was the same it took about two and a half hours to change it out and it runs great to this day my brother used it yesterday the body and transmission are almost 25 years old it has countless hours on it so it was well made out even when it was new it was very expensive the guy told me he paid almost 500 dollars for it in 98 and it was on sell because they were wanting to get rid of it because it was getting late in the year

I think caster wheeled machines are neat but on a unit like this one is probably unnecessary. If you go into a machine that's larger like the twin-blade 30 inch units they may prove to be useful and in fact Scag's SFC-30 mower has the option of casters and a lot of people who own the machine say it's easier with the casters than without as it's pretty heavy.

I like the caster wheel design. It saves you from the effort of pushing down on the handlebars and spinning the mower 180 degrees to mow the next row of grass. After doing that motion 30 times once every week or two, the stresses add up. That's only if I used a walk behind mower. I wouldn't buy one at all for my use, because the yard requires a lawn tractor. If the mower was worth as much in mower form as it is in parts, you might as well buy a riding mower or a lawn tractor. Not everyone has room for a tractor, but why pay such a high price for an underkill machine that's the same price as an overkill machine with twice the swath?

I see a flaw in the wheels, which is why I said in another video that I would put wheels on that have sealed bearings. Sleeve bushing type wheels should be fitted with grease nipples, so they can be lubed fast.

@@HomeGaragechannel if I lived closer, I would have made bronze sleeve bushings for the wheels, along with the retaining bolt having a twin spiral groove machined for grease retention, along with grease point in the wheel, or fit needle roller bearing to the wheels, with a grease fitting in the retaining bolts.

It's so sad to see good stuff at the dump getting plowed under by a dozier. I always wonder what the story is. Whether it's just a landlord indiscriminately clearing out a tenants left behind stuff or someones memories from a bad divorce.

there is a mower just like this one for sale locally on the marketplace for a hunderd dollars but it smokes and not currently running. wonder if a predator or honda swap is doable on this mower. i would probably do away with the self propelled if possible. they seem to be nothing but trouble on most mowers.
@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 3 ай бұрын
you can but you'll find out that the Predator engine has the smaller 7/8" shaft diameter which is smaller than you want for this mower.
