Dude, as a born n'bread Kebz, I can assure you, this whole language thing was a royal pain in the arse. I am natively Francophone but wanted to do English high-school and for Quebec French kids, it was forbidden by Government decree... So I had to teach myself and not through school either ( the pathetic English course was so retarded... lol ) or my mostly French speaking surroundings. Closeting a complete society by refusing to open up to the reality of a vast country is somewhat ridiculous. This ain't how you make people grow fonder of a different lingo and culture technically speaking ?! Always found it to be dumb because by wanting to protect the culture, they snuffed out the drive of most citizens to grow to encompass the rest of the continent! Anyhoo... Many historical reasons for it but I personally believe it is unfortunate and not conducive to harmonious relations between the folks of this fine continent. Just my 2 cents on the topic.

Well the fact that his father didn’t want Norm to learn French explains , at least in part, why many Quebecers wanted to separate from Canada.

at the beginning pf the Jane Fonda episode of Norm Macdonald Has a Show on Netflix, he spoke French with Jane Fonda briefly.. she said something in French, and he said something back and she was surprissed he knew and spoke good French, he basically said yeah i'm from Quebec, i speak Quebecois. It was a great episode, and both the first and last 10-15 seconds were the best.

@@Lanwarder what? Statsny était un réfugié politique. Norm Macdonald est littéralement né à Québec.
@Lanwarder2 жыл бұрын

I went to high school with Norm's cousins (Dom and ... I forget Dom's older sister's name). At St-Pat's though, not QHS. St-Pat's is one of North America's oldest high schools, and in the 70s it was a football powerhouse, steamrolling everybody 95-0. I accept that Norm pretended that St-Pat's doesn't exist :)) I was too young to appreciate Norm's humor on SNL. Plus I think in 95 he'd taken a dump on Quebec, on Letterman, so I was like, who is this guy! But I'm a big fan now. RIP, buddy

I am just 2 months older than Norm McDonald. These French-English sport meetings in the 1960s were just an excuse for fights between kids. I would not have liked to be on this English football team on the Plains of Abraham..... This was a time when the Montreal Canadiens were full of the best French speaking hockey players by design.... This is why the team was so good. Imagine if the Toronto Maple Leafs had automatic access to the best English speaking hockey players! No so, but Montreal did. I did not want to be in any sport that turned into an automatic cat fight. So I dropped hockey and went to pingpong joining a city club where we were just individual trying to compete!!!

@m_christine10702 жыл бұрын
He doesn't hate French Canadians. He was probably just caught up in what every person in Prov Quebec had been manipulated by the media to be turned against each other. We are all set up to be divided along every parameter, all based in fear. When each side is manipulated into believing that the other side is malevolent; then there's not much else anyone needs to do. Their work is done. If we all didn't grow up watching tv, cultures would have naturally learned to peacefully coexist and benefit from each other's cultures.

@Lanwarder2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMissLeduc91 Yeah, I grew up in and around Montreal and was raised in both languages. My comment was meant to be a joke. The point was that I hate whenever someone says that speaking french or being a french Canadian somehow makes that person "French".....It would be as ridiculous as saying that anyone speaking english is a Brit and that was the point I was trying to make. That being said, thanks for being this patient with your explanation. It's great to know that there are still good people willing to explain things that should be obvious (It kinda sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I honestly am not trying to be. This truly is me being 100% sincere.)

@@Lanwarder oh I see, no worries!! And, my pleasure! 😋 I find it so not necessary when people are mean to someone asking a question in the comment section. Knowledge should always be shared and not shamed. And I totally get what you mean tho. I'm from Montreal too, grew up in French and learned English later on in school. I've always considered myself simply as a French Canadian in English and canadienne/Québécoise in French. But never as a "French" person. Take care!!
