I haven't seen it in the comments yet but part of Norm's emotional break here was because Dave was there for him when he was fired by NBC and no one would touch him. Most people were afraid to cross Don Ohlmeyer but Letterman kept having Norm on to give him a paycheck and lift him out of his depression. That's a real friend.

And if memory serves me Dave called Don O. an idiot and Norm kept following it up with "naw Don's a good guy" which was Norm going along with it even though he's saying the opposite. Kinda like how Norm on The View popping back mints apologizing while struggling not to laugh at them at the same time.

The Late Show with David Letterman ended only a few days later. Letterman gave Norm his first TV stand up appearance when Dave was still host of Late Night on NBC following Carson. Norm considers it the moment he got his big break in the business and they remained close from then on.

In 2011, Norm MacDonald was diagnosed with the blood cancer multiple myeloma. He had the disease for nine years, and he did not tell anyone about his problem. This clip with David Letterman was filmed in late 2015, and Norm almost broke down when he said he loved David Letterman as a friend and mentor. As the blood cancer progressed, he was later diagnosed with another blood cancer, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which mutated into acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which is fatal. Norm passed away on September 14, 2021. Sadly, Norm, a famous comedian, dies, but he has left plenty of material for the world to see. Rest In Peace, Norm.

This was letterman’s last week on air and Norm did his final standup there. Norm idolized letterman and definitely knew he was dying at this time. Well knowing he would be dead soon and never be back there, which made him show that very rare emotional vulnerability at the end of the set

the reason norm did "not funny jokes" was because he found them funny. He didn't let the crowd tell him what was funny and what wasnt. He had a rebellious spirit and wasn't worried about the crowds opinion. He had a good take about not being "smart" on stage. Norm had commented on certain comedians trying to be smarter than the crowd and how that isn't comedy...that's just being a jerk. People want to watch the court jester...not the kings advisor type deal. Norm really was a funny guy. Even if some of his bits didn't make you laugh, you could appreciate where he was trying to go with it. His white house correspondence dinner hosting was hilarious. He roasted a dinning room full of USA elites. From President to major news outlet owners. He roasted them all with legit dirt. He even acknowledged that he might never work...or be alive....again after that job lol. He "took the piss out of them all" I think would be a phrase you might equate his performance to. He humor and joke telling were uniquely him. And he had legendary stories that were told like gossip among those that has an experience with norm. There is a story of norm getting into a fist fight with a then SNL intern (Stephen colbert) over a game of "football" (soccer) in the hallways of the offices.

@@sadiej573 ?? I wasn't being funny. I've read in both the NYTimes and the Wall Street Journal recently that Norm died of AIDS and the cancer bit was a cover up. Norm admitted as much before he died; he admitted he had a serious gambling problem, including losing $400,000 at one table in Las Vegas. He got depressed and drunk and went whoring and that's how he contracted HIV. One of the articles I read also said Norm didn't have access to Canada's health care system anymore since he had lived so long in America. And Norm lost so much money gambling, which he himself admitted, that he couldn't afford American health care. AIDS is survivable with proper treatment these days, but Norm couldn't afford it. I love and respect Norm anyway and miss him tons still.

It seemed like it went on a half hour and Conan just staring at him with an expression on his face, “where is this going?” And then the punchline is kind of a groaner. Perfect! Norm was considered by many to be “the comedian’s comedian”, as he didn’t really care if he bombed or not. He was going to do the joke because he liked telling it, and the audience was just along for the ride. He was emotional during this standup because Letterman would retire from The Late Show a few days later, and for his final shows he asked all his favorite guests to fill his final roster. Norm not only made his television standup debut on Letterman, but he also felt so much love when Letterman would bring him on the show after SNL fired him for his jokes about OJ Simpson. After Norm’s passing I searched for this to remember him, and it still chokes me up to watch it.

Norm Macdonald is the best, some people arn't a fan of his humor but hes a comedians comedian. A good example is when people talk about the roast on comedy central where he was "bombing" but he did it on purpose because he didnt want to hurt his friend Bob saggat... but even though the crowd wasnt really getting it, the comedians there were all dying laughing, and it wasn't pitty laughs hoping to get the crowd laughing, but they just loved what he was doing. People have stories about norm "bombing" but they always follow it up with how funy it was for comedians and how he did that for comedians. I'm not a professional comedian but i love stand up and Norms homor always makes me laugh even when the joke isn't as obvious as some others.

They say that Norm was working on this set for ages. Some of the material was borrowed from his first ever set on Letterman, but the notebook he used to prep this set was with him 24/7 in the weeks leading up to this appearance. So important was this set to him that, even though he was known for having 2 or 3 specials worth of material is his back pocket at any time, he still decided to use a combination of his oldest and his newest material. Because of how the ID joke seems a little disconnected from the joke before it and the joke after it, ala Mitch Hedberg, I wouldn't be surprised if that joke was penciled into that notebook at TSA check-in for the flight to New York for this show. Or maybe even on the taxi ride to Manhattan.

Also, this aired in May of 2015, right before Letterman retired. Norm was diagnosed in 2013, so he definitely knew. He was working on a Netflix special when Covid started. He was scheduled for a surgery so he told Netflix he wanted to film it from home just in case. I watched it when it came out and it is just him sitting and recording the whole thing. It was very strange to watch knowing what was going to happen. At the end they have Dave Chappel, David Letterman, Adam Sandler, David Spade and Molly Shannon. They discussed the special and told stories about Norm. They talked about this performance and Letterman talked about how moving it was when Norm started to cry but knowing what was going on with Norm at the time that it was possibly more about his circumstances. I still think it had a lot to do with his love of Letterman.

For thirty years Carson was the touchstone in American culture - before internet even before cable TV. I remember watching Carson in grade school in the late 70's. Than Letterman came in the early 80's. There's a reason Norm teared up on this show, Carson was gone, and it was one of Daves last shows. Endless content with both of them.

This was letterman's last show. My interpretation of Norm's emotions was that he truly respected letterman a lot, letterman defended him and helped him back in the day, and because letterman retiring represented the end of an era. Plus norm always seems sweet and sentimental to me. His comedy style is goofy and mischievous. He is not cynical or judgmental like many comics chose as their style. Not that there is anything wrong with more cynical styles but I would assume those comics are less sweet and sentimental.

This was Letterman's final week in 2015. Norm was a huge fan and Dave was also a fan of Norm. Norm thought of Dave as a mentor/father figure and was honored and obviously very emotional to be part of the final week of shows. This is early in Norm's battle with cancer and it probably wasn't part of his reason for being emotional. Norm's standup act can be very cerebral. He's not as in your face as Bill Burr or Daniel Tosh. He's more chuckle than laugh out loud funny, but his jokes stay with you a long time. Whoopi and Oprah must both have taken a real ego busting that he didn't know who was who.

Well Oprah's not the black woman on the view so if that's where you saw it Dave it was Whoopi. XD

Letterman ended in 2015. Whoopi Goldberg was the one who has a problem with the Holocaust. Letterman and Oprah had a issue for years. She had never been on his television show in 33 years. Norm McDonald had gotten his big break on Letterman’s show 25 years earlier. He was there because he was Letterman’s favorite comedian and obviously Norm considered Letterman his mentor. He appeared throughout those 25 years multiple times and always killed! I know you complain about the video quality but you should really play some of his Talk Show appearances. He also appeared a lot on Conan O’Brien. Where again he killed and again he’s one of Conan‘s favorite comedians. Now some of those videos are rough, but once he starts making you laugh it doesn’t matter anymore. I think he’s at his funniest with O’Brien. There are a few clips of him and Dennis Miller on the Dennis Miller show that are pretty good. If you want to see him skewer Bill Clinton and that lot there’s a video of him doing the White House Correspondents Dinner when Clinton was in office. I believe Norm is the only comedian to get a standing ovation from the Washington Elite. And of course there’s his appearance as the host of one of the early ESPN Espy awards. Norm was diagnosed with cancer nine years before his death so at this time he would’ve known. His cancer had gone into remission though, so he never knew exactly how long he was going to live.

Thanks for reacting to this, guys. Tips: "Norm MacDonald is married to real battle ax", video of him on Conan, absolutely brilliant. Also some compilations from his own talkshow, like 'Who writes these jokes' and 'when the guest loves the joke'. Brilliant stuff, much better then this.

Yeah like you said, Norm knew his days were numbered here and didn't tell anyone. The fact that Dave gave him the final standup set on his tonight show meant the world to him and this is might be the only time I've ever seen Norm like this

Why do the videos have to be good quality? His talk show interviews are still funny even if some of them are blurry or something.
