The thing is Norm's delivery was the source of the humor, not the actual joke. Which is how and why he did jokes people didn't get. It was him trolling them.

@@maxg8651 He probably did have that part in mind, but like the prospector and the old timey southern voice and all the rest of it, I wouldn't be surprised to hear it was all made up on the spot, that's the type of guy Norm was!

Conan has talked about how when Norm came on the show, it was à running gag where he'd tell "stories" but they were actually really, old antiquated jokes but he'd act like he was making it up or telling a story. That's almost definitely what he's doing here. Hell, Daz has even heard the joke before. Norm just worked Andy into the joke.

I saw a program where other comedians were talking about him after he died and they all said he was one of a kind, even when he bombed he kept on going, once when he bombed and the audience booed him, he shook the hand of every member in the audience., loved Norm RIP.

I'm glad you got to witness this comedic gem and it was fun laughing along with youse (as they say in New Jersey). An interviewer once asked Norm how he goes about crafting a show and Norm asked him if he really wanted to know. The answer Norm gave was that he now has hours and hours of material and he knows it really well, including what the big punch lines are at the end. In his younger days he used to do each show exactly the same, perfected, but still verbatim as the show before it. He decided that he's not a good enough actor to make it seem fresh and like it's happening for the first time by doing each show exactly the same, so now, he knows what the big payoff will be at the end, so he kicks off a particular bit with any random idea that comes to mind and then he just meanders around to wherever his thoughts take him. Of course with a brilliant mind like that, you can take any subject and say something funny about that, so that's what he does, eliciting humor from those smaller ideas, all the while knowing where the goal line and big payoff joke are. Eventually, he brings it back, to the big finisher and ends that bit with the big laugh. That's a tremendous amount of confidence in your skills to know that whatever comes up in each show, you're going to know how to make it funny and direct it back to the desired ending whenever you feel it's time to do so. Amazing. Thanks for recommending Lucy Beaumont. I kind of had a similar bias about checking out her standup, but I'll definitely do so now. Comparing anyone to Norm is high compliment.

I love this one the most, in particular because I think Andy makes a great observation at the end. Something like Norm being the type of guy who excitedly takes you on 5 mile hike to see something and then points at a piece of dog crap at the end of the hike and laughs that you were dumb enough to come along just to wind up somewhere so absurd and unremarkable.

What is great about the Late Norm Macdonald RIP is his joke telling is all story telling format that go on and on and feels like you are on a roller coaster in the dark with no punchline with the jokes being unpredictable. HILARIOUS! Norm Macdonald was one of Conan's favorite guests. Norm Macdonald was also Canadian.

Norm said many times that he found it interesting that people would pay to come see a comedian and then get very angry if the comedian wasn't funny enough. He thought it was bizarre that people would get angry at somebody who was just trying to make them laugh (maybe failing to do so, but it's not like they were being bad on purpose). He had a very "Andy Kaufmann"/meta-comedy/anti-comedy vibe, even when it wasn't intentional. The guy just had a warped sense of things and almost no filter, and would lean into awkward and uncomfortable moments, which created its own kind of levity. A lot of the genius of his humor is that it came from subverting expectations of what is expected of comedians. Definitely not everybody gets Norm, but those that do loved him.

I don't know if you know who Tracy Morgan is but he's a stand-up that was on SNL and he has a LOT of crazy stories of stuff he's done... when asked who the craziest person he (Morgan) knows is, he'll tell you it's Norm Macdonald.

At 7:24, they mentioned Fiona(?). I found Fiona Bruce on WILTY (Would I Lie To You) but she's not really trying to be funny. I found another show called "8 Out of 10 Cats" with Jon Richardson and his wife Lucy Beaumont who is very funny. Maybe she's the one.

I'm probably the one who sent you the link... Hey, every version on KZbin is poor quality! Don't shoot the messenger/ link sender! Also, Andy would later go on to say on Twitter that he hated Norm for the Swedish-German stuff because it was implied Andy was a homosexual, and so lots of people would troll Andy about being Swedish-German as a joke. There's a community of us hardcore Norm fans online who know all his jokes and communicate in secret Norm code, and if you know, you know. Rest in Peace, Norm.
