I’m not Irish and I haven’t seen normal people but what you said about wanting people to read your mind was so relatable. I have been working on saying what I need because I’m not very good at expressing myself and it has made relationships very difficult.

Loved your take on the show - and it has reached SUCH a broad audience because it is beautifully done and the themes delve into what we all want as humans. I really feel like part of the Irish communication style/mentality comes from the country's roots in Catholicism. I was raised Catholic in the Midwestern United States, left the church at 19, and so much of Normal People's portrayal of life in Ireland translated flawlessly to my own life here. The guilt, the shame, the heavy drinking, the feeling unworthy of love, the lack of self-esteem and lack of self-worth, the struggle to seek help with mental health...all of it (again, to me) stems from a culture with deep roots in old religious traditions. I've seen a lot of parallels between Ireland and my own upbringing and it's part of what made this show so beautiful, painful, and impactful to watch. I legitimately want to go to people and tell them to watch this show to understand how I communicate and how our community (fails to) communicate, but have such deep-seated shame surrounding human sexuality that I worry that will be the only takeaway would be that I recommended a raunchy show. It is really neat to see this show opening up conversations globally about life, love, mental health, and finding oneself. Thank you for sharing!

I haven’t seen or heard about this show until now and it’s not on Netflix in Australia. I looked it up though and it’s on Stan and you’ve caught my interest so I’m going to watch it.

Stumbled upon this video and very glad to have watched it. Loved your insight. I think the issues and themes in the show are very universal but I loved your Irish perspective on it. Curious to know what you thought of the ending. I loved it and thought it made sense. Hopeful and happy even but I see a lot of people who don’t share the same notion.

I adored the ending. It was perfect and right in my opinion. I do know lots of people who were not happy with it at all either but personally I think it's because (without spoiling it for anyone who may be reading this) people in life don't like openness and lack of closure... BUT THAT'S WHAT REAL LIFE IS! Haha And just like you said, that can be a hopeful and happy thing! so it ended perfectly for me. I'm so glad you stumbled on this too! Thank you for watching and commenting ^^

Now I have to watch this, because I have NO idea what you mean by interacting with Irish men. Weirdly I don't have a lot to say in response this time. Just hearing you and nodding on this side of the screen, hah. I'm going to maybe get a Hulu account to check this out. Wait one thing, in the US there's a lot of hiding pain, hiding need, asking for help is a weakness, etc. Which I think leads to the not just SAYING something and hoping (expecting?) the other person to just GET it. I was very confused in the beginning by what you meant, BUT, I think by the end here it's similar to what happens in the US. And probably... makes worse (there's a word I can't think of here... ex.... something. Not exaggerates...) the domestic violence PROBLEM in the US. What did I think of this video? Loved it. And if you enjoyed making it, I would love you to make more like it! Let's. Talk. About. Television. Storytelling.

Lovely Human thank you so much for this. It really means a lot thank you. Let's. Talk. About. All. The. Things. Yes I really think this kind of silence, shame and pain is universal. I think you will really like this show... and yes all of these issues can EXACERBATE (is that the word?? ;P ) real problems or ESCALATE these situations very much. We must keep speaking and resist silence! Thank you again for your total acceptance of the work I make
