Dylan really cared for his brother (Norman). He just wanted the best for him, and to him he didn't see his mother and brothers relationship look like a normal mother and son relationship. He really tried, but there was no changing their relationship.

That scene when Norman tried to kill Dylan in the kitchen always gives me chills as it was Norman's early transformation of him turning into the iconic monster he was destined to be. Plus it scared the hell out of Dylan knowing what Norman was capable of.
