It was supposed to be a match, but it turned into a war zone. The Norman Hunter vs. Francis Lee fight is a football legend that's as shocking as it is entertaining. There was drama, there was action, and definitely some serious consequences. Let’s live this fight once again!
Today, we quite literally present to you a boxing ring with two of the most successful players in football history, I know it sounds odd but trust the process.
Player 1 is Norman Hunter, born on October 29, 1943. This man was a real force on the football field. He's best known for his time with Leeds United, where he really left his mark. He wasn't just tough; he was also skilled, scoring 21 goals as a center-back and defensive midfielder.

Both hard men on the pitch, but make no mistake . They were great footballers, too. And also nice guys off the pitch. We will not see there like again unfortunately

I used to go in a pub in Horsforth, in Leeds . Norman went in there . One evening I was in with friends and I was blocking the way out. Suddenly someone kicked me hard on the leg. I looked round to see Norman grinning at me. Isaid you just kicked me Norman. He said I know I always kick people who get in my way!!. Priceless. A great guy!

Norman was my hero i totally sided with him at the time, with hindsight he shouldn't have given Lee a right hook, despite tempers being high.I always remember Gary Sprake taking Bobby Gould out at Highbury, the provocation?Gould nearly took Gary's unmentionables off in a challenge in the Leeds box ..........they were both just booked!

It started because Lee clipped his own heels and went down for a penalty, something he was known to do. I don't think Hunter was banned as a result, but Lee was.

As a Rams fan an event that is always remembered by the older generation. Perhaps mostly known for his City exploits but certainly did his bit for us. Times when the game was more about players commitment than their pay packets and flash cars. Would have mean't at least 10 match bans these days and make Cantona's ban in the mid '90' s after his exploits against Palace look like a tea party. Franny showed true respect when Norman passed away. Both great players no doubt.

This is all bollocks. Hunter didn't get banned at all. Got off scot free. Lee was banned. And it doesn't mention the Lee dive for the penalty that sparked it all, which is what sparked Hunter's wrath.

Not the only sporting rivals who ended up having the utmost respect for one another. In the '50s Ingemar Johannson and Floyd Patterson knocked hell out of one another in the boxing ring in which each floored and defeated one another. After retirement they became great friends, even flying the Atlantic to share one another's company and run marathons together. Sadly, they both succumbed to the punishment they suffered in the ring, both dying with Alzheimer's Disease.

It's arguable that Hunter's defensive cock-up in the game against Poland at Wembley in 1973 cost England a place in the finals. Unsurprisingly things were chaotic on the pitch when Lee and Hunter were fighting; it wasn't clear that both players had been sent off because referees didn't have red/yellow cards back then. Derby and Leeds had some great sides back then; Derby won the league title twice in five years, the first with Brian Clough as manager. He subsequently went to Leeds, which didn't work out well.

This was the days of proper football, not like today's Namby pamby's, in those days, tackling above the neck was acceptable (almost). The footballing snowflakes of these days would not survive the first 10 mins of any game.

And vice versa because the old school would get sent off.But actually I think soccer players are sneakier now. They can't tackle from behind but they can and do go for the ball with their studs up(which is why you don't see good honest thumping 50/50s anymore)and frequently rake ankles. Chopper Harris said a lot of them would be lucky to get out the car park if they'd played the game that way in his day.Though Lee was something of a pioneer in this respect going down to win free kicks was not a significant part of the game in those days. And as an old git I know what I'm talking about

as an Elland Road regular in the early 70s the rough and tumble would always good to watch. There was always lots of niggle in games, and this was normal.. However as mentioned by others, Lee was a bit of an acrobat and had a history of diving more extensive than Jacques Cousteau and he had taken a tumble in this game. And this "cheating" was not liked by other players hence Norman getting his retribution in early. Loved Norm. He had a long spell of being the expert on the Radio Leeds live commentaries and showed his football knowledge and wit
