Norman Reedus & Jeffrey Dean Morgan on The Shocking ‘Walking Dead’ Season 7 Premiere

“Extra’s” Renee Bargh caught up with actors Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, to chat about last night’s shocking outcome!
When Renee asked Morgan how he felt about his character killing off two of the show’s favorite characters, Glenn and Abraham, he really took it to heart. “Well, as a fan of the show I was bummed,” he lamented. “One, they're great actors - and then you meet them - they're just great guys.”
The real diehard fans of the show were out on a rare rainy night in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery watching the unbelievable scenes unfold. In disbelief, Chris Hardwick, host of AMC's after-show “Talking Dead,” said, “Tonight we've lost part of our family.”

I love when actors who play a villain are that villain's biggest fan and try to justify their actions. I mean, it makes sense, when you have to live in that character's head, you get a whole new perspective.

I'm pretty positive he was using some tongue-in-cheek humor with that comparison. He was smiling and laughing after all. He's allowed to joke while also pointing out that no one's hands are clean, and Negan feels he's as justified in his actions as anyone else. That doesn't mean he thinks Negan is a good dude. You CAN understand someone's actions without approving them.

Sierra Jones I've seen you commenting this a few times, you're being pretty biased. Yes, that specific circumstance with Rick defending his family by ripping the guys throat out, justified. But last season, Rick and his group killed dozens of Negans me whilst they slept merely because he wanted to trade with Hilltop. And yes, Rick justified his actions by saying "we need to get them before they get us" but how is Negan any different? From Negans perspective, here is a new threat to his group, his family who have already slaughtered dozens and dozens of his men, so he needed to put a stop to that which he definitely did by his actions in the premiere.

I think the difference between Negan and Rick's group is they don't take pictures of the trail of people they've killed and we could argue they mostly feel obliged to do it, and part of them still feels kind of bad about it. Their group is family, Negan's group were at some point forced to join them quite possibly and have surrendered their will to him, in order to survive. Ofc, Negan's group is also trying to survive, but both approaches have some differences we can still separate both groups, although both of them have killed people.

If people like someone, they will rationalize pretty much anything they do. If Daryl did something similar to what Negan did, then people would still find a reason for why it was okay.I think if he killled a baby with a crossbow a lot of people would hate him then, but I can't help but shake the feeling that some might say that the baby might have grown into the new Hitler and so it was okay lol! It's just how it goes with any entertainment media. I LOVED The Shield and a lot of people rationalized the fucked up shit Vic Macky did (and he was an asshole from the get go) to the point where people hated the objectively good people on the show if they came after Vic. It's kind of interesting from a psychological perspective the way people put aside a moral compass (in FICTION, not in real life obviously) when it comes to characters they have grown a bond with.

They still for the most part keep the same shit, but things happen to different characters or at different times. Like how Merryl had the hook on his arm, in the comics, Rick does. Like how Denise dies from the arrow, in the comics its Abraham. In the comics, Andrea is dating Rick. In the show, Michonne is. Spoiler Alert: In the comics Michonne dates Ezekiel. So Im guessing in the show, one of the characters will be dating him. Can't be Michonne though because she's dating Rick. Please look up the similarities between the show and comics, and you'll see that even though they don't follow them exactly, alot of stuff is similar. Negan can't die :)

Honestly? I don't really think it was Daryl's fault that Glenn died. Negan wanted to break Rick at any cost. You see the way Negan was taunting Rosita about Abe's death, he was out for blood. I'm convinced he would have killed someone else that night regardless of Daryl's actions, for his main goal was to break Rick and have him completely submit to him. And about the discussion of who's worse the saviours or Rick's group? Well, the way I see it both groups have done some f'ed up shit. I mean hell, Rick killed many saviours in their sleep (because thats very noble) and Maggie lit them up, if I recall correctly(it's been a while since i saw Season 6) and Daryl blew them up. But the big difference is that Rick's group killed only when being oposed to a threat (mostly anyways. I do believe that Rick did kill some people who didn't necessarily needed to be killed) and biggest difference, Rick's group kill in order to survive. Negan however does it for the mere pleasure of killing and to show them who's the boss. He's a sadistic psychopath. So Negans group is definitely the evil one here. Rick was just too far gone in his petty power trip, thinking he and his group were invincible. They picked a fight with the wrong guys because they were so delusional thinking they could take on anybody and underestimated the opposite team and now they payed/still have to pay the consequences for it. I for my part love JDM. He is an extraordinary actor and played Negan phenomenally. Despite of what I just said about Negan I truly love his character and hope he will stay on the show for a long while. Seeing our group lose for a change is a truly refreshing twist.

Without getting into spoilers in the comics, the two groups just do what they need to do. If we followed Negans people from the get go, I'm sure people would start rationalizing the fucked up shit Negan does just like they do with Ricks people killing other people in their sleep. On paper they are both terrible acts and there's no getting around that. For me personally, I've grown to love Negan after that initial introduction we had in issue 100. I know a lot of people saying killing two of the survivors was an easy cop out! But I think they way they did it makes the most sense! Look at all the foreshadowing of Glenns death! If he woulda survived again! After he almost died so much it woulda just became a joke! And Abraham makes sense too! Think if your about to fight 5 people at once! I'm Lucky that i knew Jeff as a Winchester from the beginning..so when i watched him in twd i didn't think he would be that eviil ...but the most scary thing is he looks and acts and move like Negan ... i'm terrified.. I like Negan because before the apocalypse started he was the father of Sam and Dean Winchester, but they went on vacation and let the apocalypse come back for round 2 so Negan had to get busy in the meantime.

OK, i gotta say this haha. so I love JDM but I dont like his defense lol. its the WAY you do things that matter. like negan is a sadistic sociopath who feels powerful when he beats someone down. he doesn't have any regard for human life. I bet the guys Daryl killed on the road weren't his "family" or friends... they were just soldiers. just bodies. just numbers. whereas, our crew is a FAMILY. So when his people get murdered - our guys didn't enjoy doing it btw - its just an inconvenience to negan. he doesn't feel heart broken; his world isn't shattered. and thats what happened to the group when he took those lives. so yes, both sides have killed, but Negan is still the "bad guy" in my book. love the actors though, they're all amazing.

So you want to use real life facts on an imaginary world in which every action taken is taken by the writing of a script? Ok lets do this. Negan is actually very honor driven. He lives in his new world order were the strong take from the weak and use them to gain more while also providing them some protection. Negan only kills when he needs to, but he sure knows how to make a show out of it. He killed Abraham and Glenn to set an example to Rick and his crew, to not mess with him or his men. And the price Rick's group paid was very fucking cheap for killing dozens of Negan's men. If Negan was a completely crazy person like the Governor was, he would have killed them all. But that's not his goal. He is a man with a plan. And as to why he picked Glenn over Daryl, apart from obvious fucking fact that in the comics Glenn is the one who dies from Negan's random pick instead of Abraham so they somehow had find a way to kill Glenn in the same scene to honor to original material, Daryl has qualities that Negan seeks in his men and instead of killing him he decided to take him in and tame him so he can be one of them and he also makes for a good bargaining chip against Rick. So killed another random guy to set his example a.k.a. Glenn.
