Still amazes me when an 89 year old acoustic guitar exists, looks that good for what it's been through, and plays. They seem so temperamental to the elements and fragile.

That’s the kind of a guitar you see hanging on a wall in a fake 50s breakfast diner warping and covered with dust. You’re not sure if it’s real but it brings a tear to your eye because you’re pretty sure it is and the interior decorator who sold it to the diner as part of a decoration accessory package bought it at a yard sale for $40.

I asked a luthier the other day (a retired luthier and violinmaker, and harpsichords, ...ok, he'll make anything) "hey, instead of making an archtop, should I try to make one of those old timey archtops with soundholes and a scroll. And he said: "no, they don't sound very good. My stepfather had one. archtops are better with f holes". That was the end of that. That's an interesting looking guitar, but buy it and you'll find out why Gibson made them with f holes or flat tops, but not tweeners like that.

Wonder how many man hours it took in 1929. How many would it take today? What was cutting edge craftsmanship and tech in 1929 v. today?
@twoodfrd6 жыл бұрын
The interior on Gibsons from this period is extremely rough. Glue drips everywhere. The kerfed lining strips are sawn by hand and the spacing is completely irregular. The workers were really pushed for speed. 15 man hours vs. 9 or 10 on a modern flat top.
