Hey, Ian. If you're going to list the songs and the originators, you might want to edit and correct songs 2 and 3. Johnny Smith originated 'Walk--Don't Run' in 1954, but The Ventures popularized in 1959. And technically if we want to be accurate, it should be 'Walk--Don't Run, '64' since Bob Bogle played lead on the '59 version, Nokie played bass, where Nokie played lead on the souped-up '64 version. Alberto Dominguez originated the Spanish song 'Perfidia' in 1939, with many covers after, but the best in my opinion was with The Ventures in 1960. Don't get me wrong. I'm not harping on you. You most likely didn't know. I didn't myself until I did some research on the songs a few years ago. Say what you will about The Ventures being a glorified cover band, there's no denying that, but in my humble opinion, however, the majority of their covers were better than the originals because they had magic in their souls when they were the classic line-up of Nokie, Bob, Don, and Mel. :)

But by today's standards they're awful!?... They are (present tense) great musicians. ...I think you meant something, more along the lines of 'they were the shredders of their day'...

@@deaterk On that note, I get the impression that they were sort of like early "guitar heroes" to a lot of teenagers back then, before Hendrix. But at the same time, they weren't as wild as Hendrix; they were more of what Great Grandma Ethel would approve of.

Oh yeah 1964 and 65 was very good years. This group The Beach Boys, Motown and some lads from across the pond we're about to make their grand entrance into our culture. Thanks for the Memories mark. my older brother had a couple of their albums and was inspired to start his own band. As a 13 year old I really admired their musical abilities. While my parents were still listening to the big band era, Sinatra and other stars from that era I was upstairs in my room digging these guys. Very nice job and awesome axe.

Fender jazz 62 lol! that’s the best story I heard all day. The ‘62 thru SUNN 4x15s is monstrous, just plain rude. should have plugged in the CryBaby and played some NIB by the Geez (Sabbath) ofcourse. glad your home and feeling better. took a little break, will put the Axe’s back to work soon 🎸🤘🏻 peace
2nd song is definitely Perfidia but he messes up quite a few of the notes so I understand the confusion... been playing that one 20x a day trying to get it down

If it wasn't for my guitar teacher I would have never known about these guys. Learned pipeline and walk don't run. At the time I didn't really appreciate it as I was more interested in learning popular songs at the time and now I really appreciate all the "classic" music he introduced me to.

Geoffrey Gentry Yea it really is a lot of fun. I grew up listening to Metallica, megadeth, 80s hair metal, whatever my dad had on so I was interested in learning that stuff as well as whatever new rock was out. Nice job Mark, I'm sure Nokie and his wife Judy would have loved the tribute. I knew Nokie and worked with him several times over a five year period from around '90 - 95. He never really wanted to play any of the Ventures material, his big hero was Chet Atkins. He was always in Chet mode whenever I played with him, always just using the neck position pickup. Only once do I remember him using the tremolo bar and when he did he looked over at me and smiled as if to say yeah I know that's something I used to do but not anymore. He told me once that Semie Mosley wanted to be know for the having the most windings on a pickup which as you mentioned resulted in a lot of output and also big bump in the mid range. I mentioned the live from Japan album and told him how I was knocked out by their playing and their sound, that I wore the album out. He smiled and told me that that the problem they were having was when you turned the Showman's up playing the Mosrite's they would distort. So the sound all the kids actually liked and picked up on was something that the Ventures themselves actually hated. Once that album came out every kid with a guitar tried to chase that sound. When I worked with him he was using his brown Fender Nokie telecaster and his blue sparkle Mosrite model, The Nokie. He said he sent it back a few times to Semie because he didn't like the pickups, so even after 30 years they were still going back and forth over the sound of the pickups. His real love of the guitar was when he was finger picking which is more along the lines of what he was doing with Buck Owens and later with Shelly West and David Frizzell. There was not a nicer guy that has ever walked this earth and his wife Judy was just as nice. Judy really hit it off with my wife Pam who was the singer in our band. I really picked up that he liked knowing he had influenced other guitar players and his influence has just about been passed down to every guitar player on the planet. He was also a really humble guy and also really quiet and how he liked to talk about Chet Atkins. The B&W videos shot in ''66 really show how ahead of their time those guys were. Bob Bogle bending notes and playing sixteen notes on the bass in the solo section and Nokie demonstrating some hybrid picking in the solo as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZOueGOma7mpb7M

Back in '95 I had the honor of Nokie asking me to get up and play at his 60th birthday celebration. It was also the first time all the original surviving Ventures got up onstage and played together in almost 11 years. I was sitting with the other musicians to the right of the stage. Sitting right in front of me was Merrilee Rush and her husband. Another one of those guys from the most famous guitar player's you've never heard of category that was there was Little Al Bruno. Al played on Dick Clark's Caravan of the Stars , played with Conway Twitty, on the hit song Behind Closed Doors, Harper Valley PTA and was the session guy on shows like Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. That was a night I'll never forget. Nokie playing wit another one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Nokie & Tommy Emmanuel kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpO6fqeCmdunhNk
