Here's a video on the best of Normandy France tourism with a big focus on Normandy food! 🥖🧀🍷 Normandy in northern France is the home of Camembert cheese, cider, French Calvados brandy, oysters and much more!
In this video I visit Caen and Bayeux, discovering the culinary delights of Normandy food and sharing what to eat in France from this region. I'll show you the tasty side of Normandy France tourism, from dairy farms to orchards to great restaurants.
If you want to skip to certain parts of this Normandy food travel guide, here are some quick links to take you straight there:
0:23 Caen Castle, one of the largest medieval enclosures in Europe 🏰

0:46 7-course tasting menu at Michelin starred À Contre Sens in Caen 🍽️

1:10 E. Graindorge Cheese Dairy in Livarot in the heart of the Pays d'Auge. They specialise in the production of the four Norman Protected Designations of Origin or PDO cheeses: Livarot, Pont-l’Eveque, Camembert de Normandie, Neufchatel 🧀

2:21 Fromagerie Durand in Camembert. This is one of only two places within Camembert that makes the Camembert cheese using the milk from the cows that are actually on site, so farm made Camembert. Those Normandy cows were so gorgeous! We also had a terrific lunch here 🐄

3:35 Domaine Dupont, a family estate consisting of 30 hectares (74 acres) of orchards in Normandy, in the heart of the Pays d'Auge region. Here they produce ciders, pommeau and calvados 🍏

3:57 Beuvron-en-Auge is an archetypal Norman village with half-timbered houses lovingly restored. It lies inland from the resort of Cabourg on the Côte Fleurie (Flowered Coast) and is all things rustic Normandy, with fabulous local producers and antique dealers 🐩
4:23 La Calvadosienne oyster farm in Caen. They farm oysters in sea water and also have 20 disabled employees 💙

5:35 Lunch at Le Bouchon restaurant in Caen 😋
Our guide for our time in Normandy was the lovely Etienne from www.lacompagniedesterroirs.com... - I highly recommend him!

Cool video, now I'm hungry ! But Etienne said two things that are not entierly true. The first is that 95% of baked goods you find in bakeries are frozen and not made on site. Being a baker myself I can tell you that almost all the goods are made on site even if they are frozen (while still raw) afterward, for the vast majority of bakeries. The reason why they freeze products is pretty simple, it saves a lot of time to make a batch of something every 2 or 3 days for exemple, then freeze it and just cook the quantity you need for the day every morning. And since it's frozen before cooking, it makes no difference for the finished product. It would be impossible to have that much variety of products, not freeze anything and still make profit. For regular white bread though it's quite rare and it's almost allways made every day. Some bakeries still don't freeze anything but they have a lot less variety to choose from. Also some bigger bakeries have a seperate production and sales site because they have multiple sales sites in town, so it's easier to control the quality if you only have one site of production. Maybe I'm explaining all of this for nothing because you already know it, but too often when people hear "frozen" they automaticaly think "buy pre-made frozen crap" while it's not always the case. The second thing is that camembert and brie made from pasteurized milk are and taste the same. They have a lot of similarities it's true, but there is added cream in the recipe for brie and not for camembert. Another difference during production is the number of times the lactic starters are added to the cheese. For Brie, it is only introduced once at the beginning. When making Camembert the lactic starter is added five times during the process. Camembert ages faster than brie. So the result is still a little different in taste, even between the two cheeses made in an industrial way, but is not comparable to two farm-made cheeses. But great video, I liked it ! I always love it when people go somewhere and try some local food and even more when it's in my country :) So, now that talking about bread and cheese has really made my mouth water, I'm going to go and eat a piece of cheese with a slice of bread. Have a good day :D

Ohh wow Overronn, thank you so much for taking the time to write this comprehensive response! I always like learning new things, so it's great to hear all this stuff. And about the cheese! Thank you for sharing your insight. And I'm so pleased you liked the video - thank you! And now I am hungry too and think I will need to have some cheese and bread for breakfast 😅

Next time make sure to check out Deauville and Trouville, as well as the Bayeux tapestry! It’s an amazing piece of medieval history, and the town itself is pretty cool! Also mont saint michel is famous for some delicious traditional cookies, and the monastery is absolutely beautiful.
