The family that the female Irish "pirate" Grace O'Malley married into are my own ancestors on my father's mother's side and she's been mentioned on here before and I was as excited as you are now hahah Though, you have a much cooler/better reason to be wicked excited because it's the whole video for you and with mine, O'Malley married INTO the de Borgia(Burk after Irishization of the name Borgia) family instead of with you where they're your blood ancestors. My own family thought O'Malley was a blood relative too until I had to sorrowfully explain to them that she had married our ancestor, treated him very poorly, and shook him down for everything he had including an attempt to take the family castle forever lol So, she would have been an ENEMY of our family after briefly being our relative's wife.

@@dalesen No offense to you... But I have to tell you as a historian that the Vikings weren't very good as fighters. They were good raiders and made great mercenaries in someone else's army but that's about it. Normans also weren't Vikings... Norman and Gothic history is my hobby... The name "Norman" is a misnomer... Ironically, it's the "House of Normandy" that put an end to Norse raids in France. According to their chronicle they were Goths from Dacia (modern day Romania) who were joined by East Anglians in their settlement of Normandy. For some reason what the Normans had to say about their own origins has been completely ignored by modern historians.

Hallo from Denmark again . Great video . Well once again we Enter the Golden age of the normans with awesome video . Now Barcelona incident is classic example of psychological warfare. Of course the normans did practice canibalism . But their did not know that . So making their enemies think they did was a cleaver scare tactics to make them think a second time going in battle with them ... But during the Golden age of the normans . Many normans Adventures went out from normandy to seek wealth and areas of influence elsewhere . Many of them was actully children of Norman nobles . And in most cases they were the second child . And since Big brother woud inherrit the title of and lands . Many Norman little brothers set out to find their own land , wealth and titles elsewhere. And these Norman Adventures carved out lands snd kingdoms for themself in southern Italy and the Island of scicily ... And one of the most famous was Robert Guiscard. He came to southern Italy from normandy in 1047. And when he died in 1085 at the age of 70. He had conquered huge ares in southern Italy and the Island of Sicilily. So huge areas of Italy was under his direct rule ... And of course the normans was also active in Spain . They went were ever they coud find wealth and glory ... Just like their viking ancestors ....

One thing that has always irked me about recounts of Hastings is how belittling it is to the Saxon army. "Just Fyrdmen. Exhausted. Demoralised." If true, its hard not to be astonished that mere farmers on a jolly beat one of the greatest warrior kings of the age (Hardrada) and then marched 200 miles and gave battle to the single most professional and battle hardened force in Europe led by a plethora of skilled and shrewd commanders.. and nearly won.

Whoa ... the Tosnys are one of the most difficult families to sort out. Various of them pop up here and there (I have Ida de Tosny on both sides of the blanket), but good luck with making sense of the family. This video gave me much more perspective--including how Roger got wrapped up in Spain. I didn't know of his conflict with Roger de Beaumont, nor did I know that Walter Giffard tried his hand in Spain. Thank you so very much for another fascinating and enlightening video.

There has never been Iberian kingdoms. They never called themselves Iberian. That's a modern word that was taken from an ancient Greek name. All the people in the Península of Hispania called themselves Hispanic kingdoms. Las Españas, The Spains. Iberia is used now in the 20th and 21st century to avoid saying Hispanic. Because the USA has confused everybody with what is really a Hispanic. Which is why people use Latin and Iberian. But the fact is the Christian and Islamic kingdoms were all Hispanic kingdoms.

Hikma History Thanks for bringing this campaign to my attention man. I’m really only scratching the surface of 11th century Iberia. Gonna have to make a video about this battle now. Super interesting and involved such a varied cast of characters. Interesting how it was papally sanctioned. It kind of seems like a crusade before the crusades. I also can’t wait to cover El Cid -Spent most of his life allied to Muslim powers as far as I can tell so shows the complicated geopolitical situation.

@@HistoryTime it came to my attention because I did my BA thesis on al-Andalus. I read a source that mentioned how the victorious Norman mercenaries quickly adopted Andalusian clothes and customs. Then when I read that they did a similar thing in Sicily, my interest in the Normans went through the roof! They seem so adaptable to any country or culture they conquered; Anglo-Saxon England, Muslim Sicily etc.

@@HikmaHistory Ah that's super interesting! Very good point- A couple of Norman lords even became Eastern Romans, founding relatively long lasting dynasties in Byzantium. They were experts at adapting to whatever situation they found themselves in.

I would say the Reconquista began the moment way back when the Moors were repelled from Galicia by the Galicians, Britonians and others. Leon, Asturias and eventually Castile were extensions of that pushback.

You could say that. But that was more survival than reconquest. For me, the real Reconquista began after the fall of the caliphate in cordoba and the death of Sancho the Great of Navarre. It began when Sancho’s son, Ferdinand king of Leon and Castile, consolidated his rule in 1054 and the next year started eating up territory from the Muslims in what is today Portugal. From that time on, nearly continuous war was fought between the Christian north and Muslim south (and between the Christians and Muslims themselves). So the Reconquista truly began in that period, imo.

I find it interesting the amount of Germanic influence in Norman and Frankish culture even after being affiliated with Roman customs for many generations. LIke the names of Roger Tosny and Ademar de Chabannes and Tancrede de Hauteville. With Roger meaning coming from Hrothgar meaning "famous spear", Ademar meaning "noble fame", and Tancrede meaning "well-though advice". This is even seen in the Christian Kings of the Jerusalem the with Baldwin line of Kings in which Baldwin roughly means "bold friend". Just a little tid bit.😜

@captmitty In my source the modern name Roger is from the Early Frankish Hrothgar. Anglo Saxon also had a similar name. Maybe Sanskrit and Germanic had a distant ancient Indo European ancestor? However, Roger, as we know it, is Germanic.

@captmitty The reason for Rogers in France is because Hrothgar or whatever was primarily a Frankish name. Frankish was a Low Country language. The High Country Germanic languages did not, for some reason, modernize their version of Hrothgar. That is why there is not a popular modern version in German. Roderick as we know it comes from Old High German, the closest ancestor of standard German. There are, however, original cognates of Roderick found in Celtic languages. Sanskrit is believed to have Indo European ancestors so that is why I mentioned it and the Germanic languages.

Yup the Germanic culture(s), influenced a lot Francia north of the Loire valley, that's why the French language nowaday has a different pronounciation than the rest of the Romance languages. It's because standard French comes from the Frankish heartland in Paris and northern France who spoke Latin with heavy Frankish influences. The sound "r", "u", "eu" in French are like the "r", "ü", "ö" in German,and it's estimated that 13% of the French language is Frankish. Fun fact, the closest language to French outside Romance languages is...Dutch with 36% of cognates. :)

History Time it sounds like it, which mic do you use? It sounds ' boxy', but that could be from reading in a cubicle set up, I would suggest you keep a foot away from the mic, place it level or a bit higher than your mouth ( so your chin is up when you you speak) when sitting with a straight back, place a few blankets or cushions around the desk to soak up 'echo'. Don't read your script with it lying on your desk, hold it up breath deep ten times before a take sorry to go on, force of habit 👍

The reality regarding the Christianized Barbarians that settled the ruins of the Roman Empire was that they would invariably intermingle amongst the natives and assimilate a great deal of local culture whilst preserving much of their own (the Romanized Visigoths of Spain, for example, had already absorbed elements of Illyrian, Gallic, Frankish, and Roman ancestry by the time they crossed the Pyrenees; they would, however, continue to speak their ancient tongue within their courts, whilst simultaneously using vulgar Latin for administrative, religious and casual purposes). In this respect, the Normans were no different than the aforementioned Hispano-Goths, Franks, Saxons, Longobards, Rus, Vandals, etc. There were no pure Germanics or Scandinavians left in Latin Europe within a few generations of their arrival.

There was a BBC series "The Normans" by a Prof Bartlett - 2010 from the still shrink wrapped DVD I have here. That was excellent, but this Norman "series" of History Time is at the very least its equal, probably better. Unlike TV - more interested in giving an impression - you/History Time doesn't shirk away from the detailed timeline and characters/places/events involved. Terrific stuff.

28:40 It seems to be a mistake there. "Donjon" precisely means "keep" in French, and thus the small castle built by Tosny in 1035 is called "Donjon de Conches-en-Ouche" (Conches-en-Ouche's Keep), but it's not its name per se. As far as I know it's just called that, not any specific name. If it was ever called by any other name at the time, I'm pretty sure nobody knows what it was.

I'm not sure how much is known about Dyflin and Isle of Mann viking sea kings and their relation to Normandy, but it would be interesting to know further on this link. It would seem Ivarr Ragnarsson might of been the king of Dyflin and some of his descendants intermarried with relatives of Rollo. I would seem like the Maxwell clan in Scotland might also have a connection to this lineage.

people have been invading and conquering land since the beginning of time. indo-europeans are originally from the steppes of central asia. does that mean they don't belong in europe? if they left there would be almost nobody left in europe, just some basques/sami/celts and of course the islamic invaders that aren't indo-aryan themselves. you could say these "natives", many of which aren't even actually native to certain regions which I pointed out but you ignored, could "reconquista", but they won't because they are weak. that's why their lands were taken from them. the only way they've gotten close to taking land is by governments allowing mass immigration and not allowing their citizens to fight back. you say "cry like babies when they use force". who's using force against whites? they are just walking into countries. these people don't have the resources or intellect to fight. force is going to come to them, though. can't wait. blood and soil, since the dawn of mankind. the weak should fear the strong. eugenics.
