Thanks for this 1937 and this video. I inherited a 1938 L5 "G.U.T. Guitar) from my Great Uncle Tony, who bought it originally (I have the receipt from the New York Band Instrument Co.) as a natural finish with an original white pick guard and its in excellent condition! The L5 has been in continuous production since 1922! I'm ready for Jonathan to play mine anytime!

I remember the story of Maybelle Carter buying an L-5 in 1930 when 'The Carter Family' was becoming so popular, and selling records that she figured she needed an upgrade. That was a big investment at the time. She played it for the rest of her life. It's always a treat to hear Jonathan playing a beauty like this.

about 15 years ago a local music store owner passed away and his wife put up his guitar collection on sale. A friend working at the store knew I liked archtops and informed me of a nice L-5 up for sale. I ran down to the bank and withdrew nearly all my savings and bought it forthwith! It plays beautifully and is a very loud guitar!

Many folks who are used to a flat top have difficulty in understanding the appeal of -- or use for! -- an archtop acoustic. The cool looks, with the f-holes, might appeal, but the drastically different sound is hard to get a handle on for some. An x-braced archtop, with its greater sustain, which Jonathan mentions, is something worth considering -- if you can afford it. I prefer a parallel-braced archtop for what I'm doing, but the x-braced kind are really more versatile. Whatever anyone's preference, to be played by Jonathan Stout is the best break an acoustic archtop could get.

Guess you've never heard of Johnny Smith or Kenny Burrell....
@joshferguson97033 жыл бұрын
@@mattrogers1946 I have Kenny is overrated imo great tone but his playing isn’t for me and JR is great in his own right I am jazz bluegrass and grindcore player for more than 30 yrs to put I lightly I am picky about the players I like and learn from but then again music is subjective my friend and I just glad you know who Kenny and Mr. Smith are and what they have accomplished
@mattrogers19463 жыл бұрын
@@joshferguson9703 Sorry, but as well as this guy plays, he's not in the same league. Hard to take your opinion seriously when you say the legendary Kenny Burrell is "overrated". That's like saying Django Reinhardt or Wes Montgomery is overrated...
@joshferguson97033 жыл бұрын
@@mattrogers1946 again it’s your opinion to feel that way also Kenny didn’t revolutionize the genre like joe pass Barney kessel Grant green etc all Kenny did was play blues which is great but not technical again it’s an opinion take it or leave

@@joshferguson9703 Whatever, your loss, not mine. Kenny is a towering figure in jazz guitar world and your opinion would definitely be in the minority. To paraphrase Willie Dixon " the blues are the roots and the rest are the fruits".

Everything is prone to change. These guitars are so well made. The woods used are exceptional. They are outstanding guitars to use to play music from the time period that they were made! But the music that I listen to, I prefer a well made guitar produced in China or Korea, Indonesia, or Mexico because of price and lets face it, you are only as good as your amp and wah , distortion, delay, chours, flanger, etc. Both amps and effects cost a lot to play the good loud music that I listen to and they are expensive, so I play guitars that are not expensive, as long as they have jumbo frets and really good passive pickups (Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio) or active (EMGs) and are made right, its all I need. Not all china made guitars suck! Amplifier's matter when it comes to the music that I listen to. I am not as talented as a lot of my friends really are, but I play like no other and they all want to jam with me for a reason! I sound So Damn Good... I am not putting this guitar down, I just would not want one because I really cant use it to get the sound I am after.
