Preikestolen or Prekestolen 'The Pulpit Rock', 'Pulpit', or 'Preacher's Chair' is a tourist attraction in the municipality of Strand in Rogaland county, Norway. Preikestolen is a steep cliff which rises 604 metres (1,982 ft) above Lysefjorden. Atop the cliff, there is an almost flat top of approximately 25 by 25 metres (82 ft × 82 ft). Preikestolen is located near the Western part of the fjord, and on its North side. Tourism at the site has been increasing in the early 21st century, with between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors in 2012, making it one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. BASE jumpers often leap from the cliff. Due to its increased popularity, the most used path to the site (an 3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi) long hike) was improved by Nepalese Sherpas in 2013.

I get the frustration. Mythology, lore, and even history are written from certain perspectives. You can have the same historical event written by different sides of the event and the perspective of the story will be different. Also, the majority of these stories were passed down over generations by word of mouth and through story telling - which changes aspects as it is passed - and those who finally wrote them had their own agendas too. I think by looking at the lore, the history, archeology, and anthropology (including the movement and mixings of people/ cultures) we can get a good understanding and picture but not full truth. I personally am more interested in hearing a person's own experience when it comes to spirituality/ practice. By sharing that, we can see similarities and also give inspirations and ideas to each other. One of my favorite quotes from all this - "All stories hold truth, but no story is true" All we can do is piece together understandings, and then explore and experiment for ourselves - in the end creating our own experience and path. Love watching your stuff.

That is very well said, and as for myself, I had my own spiritual experiences that I struggled to explain beyond personal gnosis. Looking at all of these aspects that you have mentioned (the totality of the circumstances) has helped me associate my experiences with these traditions or more or less reveal where my spiritual experiences originate from. Anyway, looking at the broader picture brings clarity, and I am often surprised by the tunnel vision of so many (whether gurus or scholars). Thanks for the inspiration for deep thought.

There is no evidence of the stories ever being passed mouth to mouth. That is a christian assumption made in the late 19th century. The alternative is that christians didn't consider it a religion and had no problem allowing the locals to carry on with their culture and only form of entertainment. That way the eddas could be eyewitness accounts. It's a logical simple explanation and those are usually the right ones.

My biggest issue is exactly what you said, is folk don’t either read things properly or listen to what’s said and they pick up on one small detail and moan about it. The issue is a lot of historical events around those times are just conjecture and hypothesis because we know there was a battle but trying nail down the finer details can be difficult. Keep doing what you do, it’s excellent. I’m Scottish and I’ve studied a lot of Scots history but I’ve also got Norwegian blood so I’m now reading the sagas and trying to absorb as much knowledge about Norwegian history as I can and you’ve helped me, so Thankyou.

@@taylorfusher2997 I am not familiar with the troll in the game, and what little I have seen has revealed enough inaccuracies for me to advise against using any form of entertainment as a substitute for authentic historical research. I believe that this channel and others address trolls, trolldom, etc. I would recommend them alongside scholarly sources as a starting point.

I’m appreciating the nice efforts in editing and video-making I’ve seen lately. That's definitely an aesthetic improvement… But the best part is always the amount of reliable information you give us here (unlike other channels with similar themes), so keep on doing what you are doing, and don't care too much about the stats! If I say something, it is when I think it may help others to come to an understanding that makes sense to them. And if someone replies with something that makes more sense to me, that is also a win. Being wrong is fine, as long as I get to know that. If I say nothing, everyone will be worse off for it. It's never butthurt and it's never a personal attack. I'd be butthurt if you were being lazy about what you're doing or trying to mold historical accounts to your own liking. And you partake in neither of those things as far as I'm concerned. So keep it up, love your channel. But I will be here writing endless comments, and it's a good thing. ;)

An excellent video, as yours always are. Yes, the problems of differing sources, plus the fact that almost all we have was actually written down years later, by Christians, who may or may not have altered things to fit their viewpoint, it's very hard to say with certainty that this or that WAS what happened or was done in the 'Viking Age'.

What you're talking about is the big reason I consider Hurstwick to be one of the *most* reliable sources on Norse culture and mythology; they don't *just* quote sources like the Sagas, they *also* look at archaeological evidence, *and* they even *test* whatever they can to the *fullest extent* they can. That doesn't mean I don't call them out on mistakes they make, like with the Runic alphabet for instance, but a source that goes to *that* length to try to present an accurate picture of Norse culture can *definitely* be considered reliable in my opinion.

I prefer longer videos over the shorter ones because I can press play, walk away, and go about cleaning my house or cooking. I don't have to babysit my phone or my tv remote. Sometimes, I will play a longer video as I'm laying in bed falling asleep. I have a thirst for knowledge and appreciate a wide variety of topics. Ancient civilizations and their spiritual beliefs being at the forefront. Though I don't consider myself pagan, I do find a universal thread of truth woven through many different religious practices.

Been up there at Preikestolen a few years ago. It's a helluva hike up there. Only way up there is a 2+ hour hike up lots of intermittently spaced rocks, so props for going up there for your talk. Going down was equally hard due to having to really pick your footfall for each step carefully, lest you break an ankle. And the views are breathtaking, worth the hefty hike. There's also NO rope, nothing to stop you from meeting your doom if you're dumb enough to test fate. Finally, there's also nothing to buy like drinks when you get there, for you have to bring anything you wish to drink with you. Love a breathtaking destination that makes you work for it and forces you to do all your own work to enjoy it. I would say everyone should visit, but that would ruin the place. Sverd i Fjell in Hafrsfjord was also a nicely done place to visit, but really off the beaten track.

And I think you do a great job explaining from your own point of view. Those that protest it's wrong about facts.. Most things are not written while things happened. And can be written of different people, all with their own input. Most important, have those people even read the first copy in original language? Much can go missed in translation. So keep up the good job. Sometimes you have to build up intrest so they are willing dig deeper into history. No matter source. Beautiful views. Sommar hälsningar från Sverige.

The problem is that we can´t be 100% accurate on any of our storys, sagas or myths. Many of the runes telling storys was made 100-200 years after the event was supposed to have taken place. We can pressume, guess and in a few cases guess pretty close to what actually happend. Some runes or tales are more accurate then others while some are just pure fantasy. There has been ( for exemple) a bunch of "Haralds" and/ or "Björns" thruout the Viking age, some mixed up in history to be the same person allthough their deeds maybe took place with maybe 100 of years between them? There ´s about 3000 existing runstones in Scandinavia, 2500 of them in Sweden, these stones describes happenings that took place allover Scandinavia where one don´t have to read for a long time to understand that there´s a huge risk to mixing up, years, names and deeds.
