Brilliant! Some great sailing shots with the waves...actually looking like waves really look, and doing stuff that waves really do, like splashing into your cockpit and downstairs. Great filming and another inspiring voyage.

I’ve been sitting on pins and needles for that town cut exit. I was hoping to be surprised, but wasn’t. Well done squeezing the cheeks and getting through! But that obviously wasn’t the end of the fun. Thank you for taking us with you and Ruth Avery! Fair winds and following seas!

Excellent. Nice to see tight spot sailing. Reminds me sailing a laser as a kid, except when I ran out of room I could jump out and push it. Doing this in keel boat with no auxiliary is gutsy.

I remember sailing thru the cut on my 48 ft sailboat with a diesel engine. It was a bit concerning as I had no charts for Bermuda. It was an unplanned stop to repair damaged sails from very heavy weather from Virginia to BVI. 😐 ⛵ S/V Cork~Texas🇺🇸

Thanks, Kevin, the stormy part of your video reminds me of a sailing story I read where the writer described the sea state as "endlessly playful waves, gaily leaping aboard". I don't remember who the writer was except that he had a funny sense of humor...

Watching you sail through that cut, it was nail-biting to watch Ruth alllmoossst run out of way at the worst time, as the swell starting carrying her back. I couldn't help but wonder if you've ever tried using the sculling oar in such a situation, for thrust and steering. Whatever the case, good job!! I am learning a lot watching you.

SPOT ON!!
@howtosailoceans14238 ай бұрын
Actually as I was editing the video I was thinking that I should have the scull rigged. At least it would help with keeping the boat pointed in the right direction for whenever the puffs of wind came in to push me a little further along.

Now that’s a point, with the advent of wide use of AIS ships probably don’t keep as good a look out / check the radar as they used to.
@howtosailoceans14237 ай бұрын
Agree. It forces us all to keep up with (and pay) for the latest. I've also noticed many navigational lights on shore and on buoys no longer work. They probably figure that everyone has GPS these days so no real need for it.
@markthomasson50777 ай бұрын
@@howtosailoceans1423 yup. I intend to get an AIS receiver, but don’t want the expense, or power drain of a transponder. One curious thing in UK, is we still have shipping forecasts on BBC radio. Whereas I can’t believe any commercial craft would use them, and most yachts not, though I still appreciate them when out of phone signal

Kevin, I'm curious about your bowsprit. It seems so precarious when you have to go out on it to Hank on the Code Zero-I have the smaller version - a Southern Cross SC28 and it has the "plank" style sprit. I was curious why yours is different. Is it because you needed more length?
@howtosailoceans14237 ай бұрын
The bowsprit had to be a bit longer to balance out the gaff mainsail, which puts the center of effort a bit further aft. This also increases the sail plan some, helping her in light airs.

@jomeijackson53117 ай бұрын
Kevin, I've been wondering why you picked Willis Sails for your new main, and have the battens made a difference? I know every gaff rig is unique, but do you have any tips for sail cut for the jib, staysail, and main for a video as a companion to how to sail a Gaff Rig?
@howtosailoceans14237 ай бұрын
Yes, the full battens not only give a better set, but have the advantage of preventing the sail from getting caught inside the topping lifts when raising and lowering.

Did you say you stow your anchor? Or do you leave it on the bow roller while on passage?
@howtosailoceans14238 ай бұрын
I leave it on the roller because it's such a pain to remove. If I were to go across the Atlantic, again, however, I would remove it.

Kicking Teriyaki Chicken, some poor man's chocolate cake on Christmas Day plus the rollers. Well Kevin it sure beats Nova Scotia in early November- warmer too with the rum drinks more plentiful. Glad you made south safely. Those bastard rollers soaking you and the cockpit- the sea doesn't care about your discomfort. All you have to do is survive the unpleasantness. U must be pretty deep in the chain by now? Safe anchorage with a cold adult beverage?
