I used this exact tool for years when I was a carpenters apprentice in the seventies . It was super useful hanging doors and cabinets etc. This was before the Makita cordless drill came around😂. Still have it in my box, but i grab the cordless drill every time! Thanks for the story

Solid vintage tool, Lee Valley sells a hex bit adapter so you can use modern hex bits.

@Roger_Icce That Lee Valley adapter looks nice! Looks like they have them for all three chuck sizes too.

I've had a few of these for years but never really got the hang of them, especially didn't bother using them as drills since I have eggbeaters and braces that I really like. I still don't use them as drills but I've been using them as drivers lately pretty often. I keep one with the slotted and one with Philips and it's easy to grab and go

Fyi, a small detail is that the pawl edges are ground at a slight angle to ensure positive locking against the ratchet teeth of the spiral nuts. If the pawls are installed upside down, the angle promotes positive skipping instead. 6:10

Thanks! I ran into that when I had to make a replacement pawl for one in a different video.

I have all three Stanley Yankee screwdrivers. I use the smallest one all the time to start screw holes. I've didn't have much luck using the large screwdriver. But still a cool tool.

I've used one of my smaller ones a few times to make starter holes too. This long one I haven't really found a use for. Too unwieldy.

I just got one today after reading Derek "Deek" Diedrickson talk about "push drills" in his "Microshelters" book. I think mine has only a large screwdriver on it.

Sounds like an interesting book. Might have to check it out.

I’ve got 2 of these that belonged to my grandfather. They’re great for doing light work where a power drill could cause damage. I collect Zippo lighters and use them to remove flints that get stuck in the flint tubes.

I'll have to keep that in mind. I ruined a lighter years ago trying to drill out the flint...

I have one of these in my farm truck box, did this last summer. Now I'll make a 1/4" adaptor as I already made a 1/4" socket adaptor (if your good you can grind one using the old bit as a template)

I never thought to use one with sockets. Now I'm thinking about making that adapter too...

should have used a yankee screwdriver to take apart the yankee screwdriver, this is wrong at so many levels

OMG. A yankee screwdriver, within a yankee screwdriver. Yankee Inception. YankCeption.
