North Carolina and South Carolina
Two bordering states, along the East Coast of these United States. Both in the American South. Anyway, let’s just start with the question...why are there two Carolinas? Why’d they have to be all separate and stuff?
Both states are pretty religious, with Christianity dominating as the most popular religion in both. Protestant Christianity, in particular.
In terms of politics, South Carolina is definitely more conservative-leaning. North Carolina has become a swing state for presidential elections in recent years, while South Carolina hasn’t voted for a Democratic candidate since 1976, and that’s only because it was Jimmy Carter, who was the governor of Georgia, their next door neighbor. Both state legislatures are majority Republican, however. The North Carolina General Assembly and South Carolina General Assembly are pretty dang similar. North Carolina has 50 Senators and 120 members of its House, whereas South Carolina has 46 Senators and 124 members of its House.
Some state laws are noticeably different in the two states. The fireworks laws are much more lenient in South Carolina. North Carolina has decriminalized marijuana use and possession a bit, and will most likely legalize it before South Carolina does. Although it was really difficult to research taxes in both states, I’ve determined South Carolina as a lower tax burden overall. The most noticeable difference is that gas is cheaper in South Carolina due to a much smaller gas tax. Sales taxes start lower in North Carolina compared to South Carolina, but counties and cities often add their own sales taxes on top of it.
North Carolina seems to have a more promising economic future compared to South Carolina. According to Forbes magazine, it’s the number one state for new businesses. But both are rocking, with similar unemployment rates and job growth rates.
Both states have identical poverty rates. The cost of living is pretty similar, too, although it’s slightly more expensive in North Carolina, especially if you move to Asheville. What the heck, Asheville? I mean, are you really that cool?
More than any other two states I’ve compared so far, North Carolina and South Carolina have much more in common than they have differences. Both are exciting places right now as they look to continue growing thanks to all those dang Midwesterners and Northerners moving to them. But that’s what happens when you’re awesome. You attract people.

I grew up from 1975-1985 spending every summer at my grandparents' home, who lived in Cherry Grove, NORTH Myrtle Beach. While we would do things on occasion in MB, the vibe is sooo much better, more laid back in NMB. I still go there and take my kids now. We avoid MOST of the tourist-y stuff in MB proper. But NMB, the BEACH itself, is SO much better!

Mostly true. I live in SC and work in Charlotte. The roads around Charlotte are a mess. Some bad roads and lots of construction. Mollie Andersen I live in the Lowcountry of SC and we're getting a lot of newcomers down here, too. And then all they complain about is why we're so different from up north. Why do businesses close at 6pm on Sunday? Why can't we buy liquor on Sunday? Why is it so hot and humid here? Why does the state shut down if we get snow and/or ice? My question to them is, why didn't they do research before they moved here? Google is your friend.

South Carolina declared war on the United States thereby starting the Civil War. I was born at Fort Jackson(Columbia) SC, raised in NC where my ancestors settled since 1680. I grew up in the foothills of NC. I went to college in Greensboro NC. Lived in Charlotte NC, Myrtle Beach SC, Waxhaw NC, and now in Rock Hill SC. My son lives in Asheville NC, which is a wonderful area but the cost of living in unbelievable bad. I think NC is better because it is more diverse.

Both Tennesee and NC struggled with the decision to secede. Tenn and NC both provided more troops to the Union than the other Southern states. Include 3 regiments of black Americans (the 1, 2nd and 3rd NC Volunteer Infantries) Also, NC lost had the highest death toll of soldiers during the war (at least, that is what NC says ;-) NC has the Devil's Tramping Ground and is the birthplace of the amazing Nina Simone, Thelonious Monk and Earl Scruggs....and Michael Jordan.

I’m from North Carolina, I have to admit our neighbors to the South have some interesting history, and frankly Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to. I also think they’ve managed to retain their culture a little better than N.C. You really have to go into the sticks here to see some down home North Carolina life. With that being said, you have bigger cities in North Carolina, with major national events, high end shopping, sporting events, restaurants, etc. Both states compliment eachother well, and while I don’t mind paying a little more for gas to have nice roads, I’ll always get me some South Carolina gas when I go to Carowinds (only amusement park to be in two states), or to see my granny in York County. -Nick from the REAL Queen City.

My wife, kids, & I recently moved from Clearwater, Fl to NC. And I must say we love it here. I was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area and it will always be home to us. But the cost of living, and the amount of people moving to the area is getting to be way too much. And not to mention the heat is unbearable now in the summer months. You really only have two seasons in Fl hurricane season & love bug season. No need to worry about cold weather because it’s hot & humid ALL YEAR LONG!!! Don’t get me wrong it’s hot & humid here in NC but but it cools off at night and there is a winter season here. My was able to see snow for her first time this year. It was priceless to see the joy and happiness on her face when she was finally able to see snow.

I do agree that North Carolina is urbaner than South Carolina. Most of the cities in NC are centered in the Western/ Central part of the state which makes it easier to travel from one city to another in about 90 minutes. For example, Greensboro to Charlotte is approx 70 miles while Greensboro to Raleigh is approx the same. This is mainly because of NC's Interstate corridor systems like I 40, I 85, and I 77.

@Matty Zee I agree im from nc (johnston county) and sc and nc are very similar when it comes to living outside of a city. Like you said I believe nc universities are the only real differencing factor as each city has a major school Wilmington-Uncw, Durham- Duke, Chapel Hill- UNC, Raleigh- Nc State, Asheville- App state, Greenville - ECU, etc. I too have noticed that NC tries very hard to come off as progressive and not so southern especially in college towns such as Chapel Hill or Asheville im just glad im not the only one who thought that.

Pretty close to true. NC is definitely upper south. SC is really its own special kind of south, especially the Low Country. In fact, I would go so far as to say that every part of the South (except Texas and Louisiana) is basically on a spectrum of Charleston Appalachia culturally. Some parts of the south are like 80% Appalachia and 20% Charleston, other parts are like 50-50, and all of the cultures in the South are basically some percentage of each. Deep South would be like 50% Appalachia, 50% Charleston. Upper South ranges from 0-10% Charleston, and 90-100% Appalachia. Low Country is 100% Charleston.

Charlotte is the biggest city because it consumed it's county in the 1990 and 2000's before the NC state government made that illegal. Raleigh boomed 10 years after but with the new law much of the growth was seen in bedroom communities in the suburbs of Raleigh which are other cities because Raleigh is not allowed to expand without permission. Wake County (Raleigh) and Meck County (Charlotte) have almost the exact population of 1 million. If you google map the cities in North Carolina you can see how weird the border are with lots of exclaves because of the law.

As someone who grew up near Charlotte. I can tell you I don't remember any tornadoes, Asheville is an overprice hole in the wall, and going to Carowins (amusement park that is on the boarder) to ride coasters, and pick up fireworks before heading back north is something we always did as kids. So overall goodvideo about the state I love.

I live in Greenville SC and my mom lives in Asheville NC. She is moving back home because Asheville is largely full of liberals and poverty. Greenville is just miles ahead of anything in western NC. As for the rest of NC, I haven't seen Raleigh, Greeneville, Greensboro, or anything towards the lower state. Charlotte is pretty cool. South Carolina has probably the best city of the South: Charleston. Also gas is cheaper here, our flag is much better, and we have peaches.
