I’m from North Carolina, I have to admit our neighbors to the South have some interesting history, and frankly Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to. I also think they’ve managed to retain their culture a little better than N.C. You really have to go into the sticks here to see some down home North Carolina life. With that being said, you have bigger cities in North Carolina, with major national events, high end shopping, sporting events, restaurants, etc. Both states compliment eachother well, and while I don’t mind paying a little more for gas to have nice roads, I’ll always get me some South Carolina gas when I go to Carowinds (only amusement park to be in two states), or to see my granny in York County. -Nick from the REAL Queen City.

Charlotte is the biggest city because it consumed it's county in the 1990 and 2000's before the NC state government made that illegal. Raleigh boomed 10 years after but with the new law much of the growth was seen in bedroom communities in the suburbs of Raleigh which are other cities because Raleigh is not allowed to expand without permission. Wake County (Raleigh) and Meck County (Charlotte) have almost the exact population of 1 million. If you google map the cities in North Carolina you can see how weird the border are with lots of exclaves because of the law.

Pretty close to true. NC is definitely upper south. SC is really its own special kind of south, especially the Low Country. In fact, I would go so far as to say that every part of the South (except Texas and Louisiana) is basically on a spectrum of Charleston Appalachia culturally. Some parts of the south are like 80% Appalachia and 20% Charleston, other parts are like 50-50, and all of the cultures in the South are basically some percentage of each. Deep South would be like 50% Appalachia, 50% Charleston. Upper South ranges from 0-10% Charleston, and 90-100% Appalachia. Low Country is 100% Charleston.

A sad fact is that progression and industry have forced thousands of native Charlestonians (SC) out of areas they have resided in all their lives. Generations of families forced out of their homes because they just cannot afford to stay any longer. I am all for "advancing" and tourist dollars, but it's devastating to locals. Even churches have been forced into relocation to North Charleston. I am assuming this stuff is happening all over these cities that are growing so rapidly, be it for businesses or for tourism. I am sorry to hear you're going through it, as well.

North Carolina declared independence from England three times: Mecklenberg County declared independence May 20, 1775 And the Halifax Resolve declared independence April 12, 1776. The last one was obviously July 4, 1776, when all of the United States declared independence.
