It is ! My daughter is there . Finally spoke to her yesterday . Mudslides roads washed away bridges collapsed ect . Devastating . Because people can’t get in and out except now only emergency crews. It will be rare to see any actual on the ground footage except for local citizens which I’ve been finding on KZbin and some drone coverage but yeah it’s devastating.

Anyone wanting to help more: first donate to Red Cross and other reputable organizations who are supporting first responders. Second, there’s an effort to help restore communications by getting Starlink units to basecamps and isolated communities. Look for reputable organizations who are helping with that. I don’t think folks realize how devastated Western NC is - that there’s dozens of mountain communities that still have no way to communicate with each other or with the outside world. There’s towns that we know have been almost completely destroyed but we have no way to get on the ground, or even talk to anyone there. Please help, y’all. :(

I saw a video where they were using drones to bring food into abandoned cats in an area that was unreachable. I realize this is a much larger scale but I was in a similar catastrophic event where we were cut off from everyone. No electricity no phones no food no fresh water... And no way to get it into us for almost 2 weeks for some people. My son was at his dad's just 20 miles away, and I couldn't get word to or from them for days. And I was a law enforcement officer at the time.

There’s no cell service and radio can’t cross mountain ridges. Many cut off communities are also 100 km or more from land bases. And, the supplies they need are things like generators, fuel, water, etc - too dense to go by air. Communications is first, followed by establishing overland routes, then getting people out who can’t stay in a survival situation.

This area has beautiful mountains and lovely rivers which make it extremely difficult to provide aid and the area is also rather economically depressed normally. As one who has lived here for decades and love it I can tell you that these people are strong and hardworking and the communication problem has been challenging but is being resolved. The helicopters are frequently overhead bringing aid in the form of rescuers, food, water and other supplies. It is impossible for people to get help when they cannot communicate their needs to the outside world and so very many roads are impassable. These are just some of the challenges facing those trying to deliver aid.

How will you navigate a drone without cell service? We need the cell service to enable people to communicate. Right now, supplies are being stolen and wasted because first responders in different cannot plan on the fly. It’s not a lot, but it’s frustrating to first responders who are conscious that the first stage of relief is still in progress and there’s thousands who still have not been able to communicate with the outside world. Don’t be so quick to judge if you’re not here helping.

I’m guessing what they’ll do is similar to how they’re rebuilding the Baltimore bridge. The Army Corps will provide technical and logistical expertise and they’ll work with local contractors. There’s nearly 400 different roads that are currently impassable, mostly from massive slides and structural failures. There’s entire towns that are uninhabitable and may be uninhabitable for decades. :(

Hello. We are in need of a comparison. If cities are built the current way, how would we build them to accommodate for such changes in weather? I am of the opinion that ever since about the 1950's with the invention of the modern subdivision, we have been building incorrectly. We need something to compare our modern cities to. It would be a futuristic city. People in government sit there on computers all day and run simulations, right? So... design what you want a city to look like. 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' proves to you that debt can be purchased. China (or Japan) could purchase America's debt and suddenly it's $35 trillion of liquid capital to build a city with. However, we won't want whoever is in charge now to be there. So, it's been a set-up. To get police to do the wrong thing. Scotty Shafer got mishandled by police, and it was an embarrassment. The police killed somebody by mismanaging traffic... and then arrested the star golfer of the tournament.

These aren't subdivisions. These are tiny mountain towns, many of which have been there for a century or two. The mountains can't handle high population density. Many of these places have only one or two roads in or out, and many of these roads are destroyed. Even the interstate wasn't spared.

If we still had land lines, people could stay in touch with their loved ones. I am living in the house I inherited from my parents and my landline has been there since the 60s. During Hurricane Florence which impacted where I live in NC, I was without electricity for six days. We got through it, but being able to call people and have my friends and relatives call me and check on me helped me so much. But these old land lines are no longer being serviced, just allowed to deteriorate, whereas when cell towers go down, cell phones are useless. But everything's for profit's sake now, so an old technology like land lines only provides a public service, so we are all forced to accept the new, supposedly, "better" technology that basically serves the bottom line first. We all deserve better than that, don't you think?

Landlines require wires and telephone poles to stay up. Hurricanes and tornados have a habit of removing those from service. Radio is the more survivable option - and yes, cell is radio. So is amateur radio. Landlines were a good technology for old Earth, but that no longer exists. This new Earth requires more resilient options. I came through Helene (and Debby and Ian) on a boat. My solar is keeping my refrig running and my amateur radios are keeping me in email.

Amateur radio saves the day in disasters. So does investing in infrastructure. Tennessee and Florida voted to block the infrastructure bill. Move them to the back of the line. Edit: radio wave propagation is sensitive to terrain. I lived in the mountains and found that 2m band was better for my neighborhood but 70cm was better for less wooed areas.
