If you’re a kid that’s been over looked by FBS schools, this is where you go. NDSUbeats Minnesota With Minnesota kids that the gophers didn’t want. The gophers barely beat them when NDSU WAS still division two and transitioning to division one and NDSU had a chance to win on a last-second field goal but it got blocked. Takes a lot of kids that are 6 foot six 230 pounds and turns them in the NFL lineman. And the quarterback coach obviously knows how to judge talent and coach them up.
@zacharyhoyte4934 жыл бұрын
Capt. America I actually believe that for some athletes once they don’t have power 5 offers they may chose to go to schools like NDSU or JMU which are top tier FCS programs which receive more national attention
@jesusoftheapes4 жыл бұрын
the 6' 230 comment is a bit of an over statement but they do take a lot of 6'4'' 270 lb guys and turns them into good O-lineman guys and make them into lineman . and make due with undersized kids on defense and build them into good CFL and college talents . Derrek Tuszka is the only d-lineman that has made the NFL in a long time . 1938 -2020 only 9 offensive lineman have ever been drafted from NDSU . Though the FCS and schools like NDSU are the places that keeps the CFL going and many players who come from that place do make a good go of professional football in Canada ! The CFL is sooo underrated ! People need to watch that league ! It's as good as the NFL with enough different to keep a 2nd football league interesting . I think more people need to give the CFL a longer look . Especially those who really liked the idea of the XFL or AAF . If 10% of the NFL fans tuned into the CFL over the 18 game season they hold from May through late fall I think it would catch on down here . I think they should rename it the North American Football League and try putting just 3 teams in the NORTHERN USA again and that league would become a different animal . Like Duluth MN , Gary Indiana and Marquette MI. That would give the league 12 teams . Which would allow for 4 divisions .

I said 6’6” 230. There is one in the latest recruiting class. Wasn’t landen laechler a tall skinny kid that played a lot of basketball, which requires footwork, required for college level lineman. Loved this video. And YES, I believe that the North Dakota State Bison football program should DEFINITELY take it up a notch to full time D-1 and take on some of the major schools, like Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Penn State, USC, Washington, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Michigan, et al. I am a Kansas Jayhawk fan and was witness to the 6-3 loss to North Dakota State in Lawrence, Kansas several seasons ago. I was thoroughly impressed with the businesslike manor North Dakota State deployed that evening in order to win that game and was further impressed with the fan support I saw from the followers of the Thundering Herd, numbering about 1,000 that particular evening. Then after seeing the NDSU football team take down Kansas State (in Manhattan Kansas), University of Minnesota at Minnesota, Iowa State and Iowa with both games in the state of Iowa, I have become a psuedo-fan of the program and believe they should adopt the nickname "Giant Killers." This program is LEGIT and it's my hope the AD at NDSU will reconsider NDSU's position within the college football ranks, as I believe the Thundering Herd football program could defeat quite a few D-1 powerhouses, simply because the NDSU team conducts itself in the proper manner. As I wrote earlier, they're very businesslike in their approach and their development of talented prospects into productive players is simply outstanding. Best of luck vs Oregon in a couple months. I'll be watching.

Many, MANY of the kids who play for the Bison are the really good kids who either got hurt in their senior year of high school, or played behind a guy who was a top recruit at their position or played for a smaller high school or the larger school wanted them to play another position (like Trey Lance) so they were overlooked for one of those reasons. Many Bison players have a HUGE chip on their shoulder because of this so in their minds they have something to proof. Most of the Bison players redshirt, it's almost a given and the upperclassmen teach the younger guys. It's more of a fraternity/family with everyone doing what they can to make everyone else better for the betterment of the program as a whole. It truly IS a point of pride for Bison players. It's pretty much always been like that....not the cutthroat stuff you hear about in FBS programs where everyone is more worried about their individual stats and how it might effect them getting into the NFL and in what round. The Bison players and program figure that the better WE ALL do the better WE ALL look. There isn't much to do in Fargo, N.Dak in the dead of winter, so most of the players live in the weight room. There are Captain's practices and everyone shows up or they better have a darned good reason for not showing up. The Bison motto's is: "The strength of the Herd is the Bison, the strength of the Bison is the Herd"....and they mean it, because they live it. One more thing. Ask someone sometime how many stars Carson Wentz had coming out of high school in Bismarck, N.Dak....Rivals, Scout, ESPN recruiting etc..... They won't know generally. Carson Wentz had ZERO stars coming out of high school and if you look up player rankings by state you won't find much as far as players in N.Dak go. Yet Wentz was taken #2 overall in the NFL draft and could have just as easily gone #1. NDSU/Bison Alum from the 1980's.

I doubt it'll happen even if they do. Right now they're an unstoppable force in the FCS and their record shows it, why would they sacrifice that to become yet another middling team in the FBS? And what conference would they join? If they go Mountain West they may rack up plenty more wins but they'll never see a chance for a championship and if they target a power 5 they'd likely end up in the Big 10 and have fun fighting the power houses there so their best bet would be to go independent and the only independent team that ever even has a shot at a natty is Notre Dame, a school with a much bigger venue, brand recognition, and funding so they'd just be waffling about for the most part. Better for them to stay right where they are, honestly.

Getting into an FBS conference isn't as easy as simply saying you want to. Different conferences have different criteria for joining. Educational programs are part of it and NDSU qualifies there.....stadium size/seating is another criteria and NDSU doesn't qualify in that regard. NDSU would need to build a new stadium and that's not going to happen anytime soon. A conference also has to invite a school to be a member after that school shows some interest (and qualifies). NDSU has even looked at moving up but it's just not feasible at the present time.
@ubon114 жыл бұрын
TideFan Yankee I agree that conference fit is a problem. Obviously, it would be G5. The MWC would be logical, but true, they don’t have a stadium for that. The MAC might be ok with a small stadium, but I don’t think they would all want the travel to Fargo. So that brings it back to the MWC and why not build a 40K indoor stadium? Surely there are some billionaires in Fargo and some tax money?
@tidefanyankee24284 жыл бұрын
@@ubon11 So throw away a perfectly good stadium which is close to the NDSU campus to build another one??? That doesn't make very good financial sense. Do you have any idea how much building a 40K stadium would cost??? The people in Fargo shelled out the money for the Fargodome already. It would essentially sit empty (the Fargodome) and unused..... Do you have any idea about the area? I do, I'm a NDSU/Bison alum....where would they put this new stadium? It's an honest question..... Bulldoze the Fargodome? Why? To satisfy what people outside the state want? Even if they did do that (bulldoze the Fargodome) it would take more than a year to build what you suggest. And just because NDSU might want to join a lesser conf doesn't mean they would be invited to. It's not as simple as raising your hand and saying "I want to join conf X" Not only do you have to have met the criteria, you have to be invited to join.
@collegefootballtouche26334 жыл бұрын
Being invited to the Big Ten eventually will be the case if the Bison moves up to FBS...but I don't see anyone in the B1G wanting any part of them after K-State, Iowa and Minnesota losing to them...not to mention them running off 8 of 9 of the last FCS titles. However stadium size does matter as well as lodging for traveling teams, media and entertainment. I doubt it would happen but the B1G would be best option if offers came in; they don't have enough money to be an independent school like Notre Dame. But if I were the B1G, I'd drop Rutgers and Maryland for a single North Dakota St squad!

I'm a FSU fan but I really enjoy watching NDSU games and have so much respect for their program. I believe they could compete in the FBS and in time, once they've transitioned, will be able to compete with the top FBS programs. One major issue, that you mentioned, is if the move to the FBS is even desired bad enough to make that jump up without an offer from one of the power conferences? Which is probably not, however, if one of the other conferences could convince NDSU to join them I believe it is the AAC but it would take quite a bit of convincing from the AAC particularly since NDSU would be at a regional disadvantage from the rest of the conference.

I want to see NDSU play Marshall from Huntington WV because both of their mascots are the same & they also go by The Thundering Herd. They are also FBS they were D1 FCS & moved up to FBS at about the time NDSU moved up to FCS otherwise they would have probably met by now in a play off game or national title game. Marshall won the FCS Championship game in 1994 & again in 1996. There were runner up in 1995. I met a couple 11 yrs ago from Huntington & John's man cave was all decked out in Bison stuff. That how I found this out. He was a Marshall alum. I looked up their D1 FCS history.

@tidefanyankee24284 жыл бұрын
@Red HawK13 What you wrote isn't true. Joining an FBS conference isn't as simple as simply raising your hand and saying "OH, OH pick me!!!". There are certain criteria that have to be met, to include an invitation to join said conference. Casey Gardner is absolutely correct.....NDSU doesn't fit the seating requirements for most, if not power 5 conferences. NDSU does meet the academic requirements with PhD programs, and Masters programs etc.... If you think all a school has to do is submit an application, you don't know much.
@tidefanyankee24284 жыл бұрын
@Red HawK13 Liberty if I'm not mistaken is an independent in the FBS....they are not a member of a conference. Bit of a difference there. No, they (the NDSU Bison) won't "pass easily". NDSU would want to be a member of a conference, not be an independent. They wouldn't make a Power 5 conference membership. They might be able to make one of the lesser conferences, but what would be he point? To satisfy you, so your Red Hawks would have a chance in the Missouri Valley conf???? LOL!!!! The money wouldn't be better, the exposure wouldn't be better...so why do it then??? The folks at NDSU have crunched the numbers and moving up wouldn't make sense. Do you actually believe you know more about this and the Bison program than people in it???? Spare me....
@caseygardner44064 жыл бұрын
Red HawK13 you’re right. The last timer I heard was that they would me to remodel the dome to fit a larger capacity but I could be wrong there. I know it wouldn’t be easy to move up but personally I don’t know if it’s the right move. They would go from competing and winning national championships in FCS to never being in the conversation of one in FBS. Not to mention the recruits they would lose because of that fact. On paper it’s easy to say NDSU should be playing G5 football in the MWC or MAC, but logically speaking they are dominate for a reason and their draft record speaks for itself because of that.
@khure7114 жыл бұрын
You’re insane if you think NDSU is going to be a top 20 team in the FBS. They stay in the FCS because they know if they move up their program would go to shit. You think teams like Alabama, Georgia or Clemson are going to lose to North Dakota lol they wouldn’t even stand a chance at a full season of legit competition. It’s pretty easy to prepare for 1 actual game the entire year then you spend the rest of the year against FCS schools who fill have the rosters with walk ons.
@amyrietveld30174 жыл бұрын
NDSU has a phenomenal program. However, I think SDSU also has a great program and is one of the few that can compete with NDSU. It's also a really fun rivalry that doesn't get a lot of attention outside the midwest.

Defintely. SDSU has been really good, and has had some tough losses to NDSU in playoffs. I think a year or two SDSU matches up best and likely 2nd best team in FCS.
@TonyPerez8164 жыл бұрын
This program is fantastic on their level. I would love to see them in the Big 10. I think they could definitely hang and quickly become a bowl team. Most FBS conferences have at least half garbage teams. I'm sure NDSU would have no trouble with Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois a Indiana, etc. I think they would have to consider whether they want to be a perennial power, or simply a "bowl team". I think they could become a powerhouse, but who can say for sure? Others have dominated in the lower division and then faded into obscurity after moving to the next level. If they moved up, and went through a few tough years, finishing sub .500, them going on to a few years of minor bowl games, would the crowds still be there? Easy to just say "yes", but there are so many examples of the opposite happening. "Great" lower division teams with crazy win/loss records, huge game day experiences, and upsets over major teams, who become nobodies at the next level. Again, i would love to see ndsu move, but it could be tougher than people think. Even with a handful of impressive wins over the years.
@jq16834 жыл бұрын
Pretty spot on Tony. Even if moving is a possibility, the college has a tradition of playing for and winning national championships before this big run. It would be a difficult change to "look forward" to bowl games at a neutral site , especially now in the FBS these bowl games are losing more clout the ever. Even going undefeated in non power 5 is not gonna get you in the final 4 most every year.... Sure the competition would be better, but the fans really look forward to the multiple playoff games, it's a great atmosphere and lots of fun

I feel like a college football team that's been underrated but overachieving would have to be University of Cincinnati. For one, they have to live in the same state as OSU which means that they're already gonna be overshadowed by fans of the buckeye faithful and they're also in a non-power five conference. But the thing that makes them overachieving is that they consistently take out most power 5 teams they've played against in the last 2 or 3 years, like when they punt kicked UCLA back to California. I feel like if given the opportunity, Cinci would move up to a power 5 conference like the ACC, or even Big-12. Maybe not the big-10 though with the powerhouses of OSU, Penn State, and Michigan, but still, they could very well make it in a bigger conference but are constantly overshadowed by the big team in Columbus
@brian24404 жыл бұрын
I mean they literally used to be and won conference championships in a Power conference so is that really surprising? People forget there are 5 teams in the AAC that used to play in Big East... They also don’t realize that UH and SMU used to play in the SWC, which predated the B12 for 50 years and included UT, Texas A&M, Baylor, Arkansas, TTU, TCU, and Rice. And UH and SMU were consistently good in this conference.

I believe that they should slowly start positioning themselves for a move up to the FBS. I believe they could start out getting an invitation from the MAC, spend 4/5 years beating up on all those teams, then hopefully get an invitation to join the Big 10 one day. Rivalries for North Dakota State against Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan St, and Minnesota, and Ohio State would be good ones because of their close proximity to each other geographically speaking.

The only conference close to them that they could keep a winning record in is the mountain west, so I could see why they wouldn’t want to move up. (not saying that they couldn’t in the big ten just that they would keep consistently winning at the rate they are at)

Derek Johansen or something yeah that’s basically what I said, they would be able to win at the same rate they are currently in the MW, the only G5 conference close
@brian24404 жыл бұрын
Derek Johansen or something Stats aren’t on your side against Boise State. Just in the general scheme of college football that program is ludicrous... It’s one thing to be dominant and play at a high level as a G5, but then there’s Boise whose 219-43 in the last 20 years, which is tied #1 overall in FBS, including btw a 133-12 home record which is #1 in the country. Yes the program has regressed, but then again it’s regressed from statistically the best G5 team to ever play the game.

Heh, they think the Fargo Dome gets noisy, wait 'till they enter the House of Loud! In all seriousness though, I've been saying all year this game is gonna be one of the biggest hurdles for my Ducks this year, second, or maybe even tied, with our game against Ohio St. the very next week. The Bison are gonna have a hell of a time overcoming our D but we're in a major rebuilding period on offense so I anticipate a pretty low scoring defensive battle. In the end though, there's a reason the Ducks went from a 7-6 season with a Vegas Bowl loss to PAC-12 and Rose Bowl champions in just 2 years. Cristobal is an insanely good recruiter and now that we've gotten rid of Arroyo's predictable offence I see us going nowhere but up.

My two cents.... NDSU is good enough to play at the next level. What they do not have is a large tv market or large pool of financial donors. Even if everyone in the 48th most populous state was on board that's still tiny in the scale of College football. They will be stuck in this championship cycle until either they find massive new revenue streams or ND's population doubles or they get kicked out of fcs for hoarding all the trophies. The best case scenario would be if NDSU's level of play increases the level everyone else in the fcs is playing at too. Iron sharpens iron. Definitely seen it in sdsu, uni and jmu. Hopefully it spreads.

Nice piece. But missing missing another key reason they are not ready to go up a level: stadium size. They would be required to update their home field to accommodate at least 25,000 fans. That is no easy task. It would have to be an indoor stadium and the expense is huge. The Fargodome can’t easily be upgraded accommodate such an increase. The NDSU fan base and Fargo area can support the 19,000 seat stadium and the budget of a top tier FCS team. But they don’t have the support to pay for a brand new stadium. Not right now anyway. Maybe after the population grows some more and IF they keep up their winning ways. Having said all of that I think are good enough now to be dominant in the non-power 5 conferences.
@jammin51004 жыл бұрын
They dont meet the requirements to move up into power 5. They dont wanna go to a GO5 and compete for just a conference champ. Even if they did compete in a p5, they’ll have winning seasons. But give them a few years in any conference they’ll fit in and they’ll pull in 4 star recruits and 5 star recruits. And then the dynasty will be on track once more but with better talent. But a test to see if they can hang is if they beat oregon. Its predicted oregons defense would be great this year. And they rule the pac 12 and if NDSU beats oregon. They can rule the pac 12
@brian24404 жыл бұрын
They would face the same issues Boise State faces in joining the Pac12 - meeting research and market requirements aka things that have nothing to do with actual football skill. Boise State literally has better record against the Pac12 and multiple wins over Pac champions, yet is “unqualified” to join the conference. They’ve been rejected four times.

Iowa was a 5 loss team the year NDSU played them, with embarrassing losses to Penn State, Northwestern, Florida, Wisconsin, NDSU and close wins over Rutgers 14-7, Minnesota when Minnesota was bad 14-10 and Purdue 34-27. That Iowa team was good in 2015 but not so good in 2016 so in all honesty NDSU has never beat a FBS team that has had a legit ranking at the end of the Season. Now Appalachia State is a different story they won the national Championship year after year like NDSU and looked unbeatable at that level and also beat highly ranked power 5 teams and moved up to a bigger conference and are still winning 10 to 11 games a year. What App State has done is more impressive than NDSU, if NDSU wants to change my mind move up to the Mountain West and still be a 10 or more win team and beat a annual top power 5 team like Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama, Clemson like Boise state and Appalachia State have been able to do. Not just hang your proof you're a power 5 contender on beating a 7 win Iowa team.
