Slight clarification: Diesel boats are loud when running their diesel engines on the surface. When underwater and running on batteries they are *very* quiet. This isn't really relevant in a ballistic missile sub since their main value is in how long they can lurk on station, but diesel attack subs can be very troublesome to surface ships because of how quiet they can be on battery.

@MaticTheProto3 күн бұрын
Which is good. The german diesel electric subs are near undetectable
@ScorpionTechReviews2 күн бұрын
Ok, so here's the thing about this submarine: 1. Diesel-electric subs are actually extremely stealthy, but only as long as they run on battery power - a few days, at most. Once the batteries are drained, they need to surface because the diesel generators need air in order to run. As you might imagine, they're not exactly quiet while running the diesel generators. While they only need to bring the mast up to get the air, that will be detected in short order by pretty much any modern radar, including the patrol boats. 2. Even while running on battery power, the sound imprint of the propellers and the electric engines is well-known and easy to detect using passive sonar. And once you know it's in the area, you can hunt it down using attack subs and/or specialized long-range aircraft and helicopters. It will be a pretty short hunt. 3. It's highly unlikely that the ancient subs that NK has are well-maintained. Upgrading them won't help. These don't have a chance to be a real threat, the only way for NK to present a credible submerged nuclear threat is to buy nuclear subs from Russia (which, again, are pretty easy to detect nowadays) or build their own (probably the worse option). 4. The important part is that NK can launch nukes from subs, theoretically, maybe even without blowing up the sub in the process and if they're lucky and the wind blows in the right direction, the missile might even land in the same postcode as the target. This is a big thing for them.

@otobking, I would think our Military is actively using all of it's tools to keep track of potential threats, at least that's what you expect with competent leadership. Since it's estimated that there are some ~140 million square miles of ocean on Earth, there's no shortage of "oceanic real estate" but I'm guessing that subs aren't aimlessly wandering all over the planet, it just makes sense that they need to stay somewhere near to where they can resupply which would mean a predefined area of "containment." I recall the U.S. declaring that our Military has underwater "detectors" which could "hear" the OceanGate "Titan" submersible implode. No doubt we have subs in strategic locations which are monitoring under and above water threats, along with other types of underwater technology. For threats to go undetected, we'd have to have again, incompetent/complicit leadership or someone has some seriously upgraded tech and above average "detection avoidance skills."

The diesel generators are not running when they are submerged, only electric motors which are quieter than nuclear subs. The US navy has figured that part out because the new subs they’re building are extremely quiet, but in theory electric motors are quieter than nuclear reactors because of how many high pressure pumps are needed for the water demands of the reactor. Knots is just nautical miles per hour. Nautical miles are longer than a statute mile (or, properly, international mile, because it's defined by a 1959 treaty between countries that use some version of Imperial measurements), because a nautical mile was originally defined as one minute of arc of the circumference of the Earth at the equator. This means that before the nautical mile was redefined by treaty in metric terms, the circumference of the Earth was exactly 21,600 nautical miles. For reference, an international mile is 1.609 kilometers, while a nautical mile is 1.852 km. (That's literally how they're defined - US customary units, which aren't all the same as Imperial, are defined by statute in metric terms.)

I used to work in the submarine/torpedo industry. My recollection is that in general Diesel subs are less noisy than nuclear. This is for the obvious reason that they can turn everything off, but nuclear subs have the power plant running continuously. It's a different matter when the diesel engine is running. Nuclear subs of course are much faster and can stay submerged for longer periods, but diesel subs do have advantages in some situations and are of course much less expensive.

Diesel/electric are among the quietest boats. When they run silent they become holes in the ocean. Nukes, cannot be shut down, the pumps have to continuously circulate water in the reactor, this makes noise. Back in the 90's after apartheid collapsed the South African Navy had an exercise with the USN, our Daphne class boats pretty much sunk the fleet.

You said that diesel boats are loud and easy to detect. It's generally the opposite. Modern diesel/electrics are quieter that nuke boats, are generally smaller, and are more difficult to detect. Now, this NORK frankenstein'd Romeo is likely not of the more modern advanced diesel/electrics. I doubt it would be a challenge to locate and eliminate. But nuke boats have a relatively noisy cooling system that can't totally be quietened. These boats are still extremely hard to detect, but if you know the adversary's exact type, we have computerized libraries of acoustic signatures on our ASW ships/aircraft and subs that can make locating a nuke boat a bit easier.

Former submariner supporting what some others have said. Diesel-electric subs are only noisy when running the diesel engines to charge the batteries. That would normally be done while submerged, with only the snorkel mast and perhaps some antennas and periscope(s) out of the water. This would normally be done at night to minimize the chance of being detected. Even our (U.S.) nucs have diesel engines and batteries which are used should the reactors be shut down due to emergencies (most likely for drills/training which would be scheduled for when it is dark outside). Nice video though!

15:53 fun fact, the An-2 of the NK Army are so slow that they are almost stealth for a radar searching for modern jets. It gets confused with seagull flocks. So it could carry a nuclear weapon. Also, no need to study fancy evasion maneuvers after drop, suicide pilots only.

“Nuclear Submarine” powered by diesel…
@Cowboycomando542 күн бұрын
So I keep seeing people make the claim that nuclear subs are louder than subs running on battery, and that is not entirely true. Certain reactor plants are designed to operate on natural circulation alone for answering low rpm bells. This means the reactor coolant pumps, which are the loudest part of the sub, are turned off. This capability makes them quiet as a diesel on battery.
